Forty-two Decembers: how Chip Davis turned a rejected classical experiment into America's longest-running Christmas tour

Mannheim Steamroller is one composer's cottage industry in Omaha that became the biggest-selling Christmas act in the United States; in 2026 its two touring companies play 87 shows between 11 November and 30 December, and its 79-year-old founder has published a memoir.

From a trucker song to a label of his own

Louis F. Davis Jr. — Chip Davis — was born on 5 September 1947 in Hamler, Ohio, and trained on bassoon and percussion at the University of Michigan School of Music. His first commercial hit had nothing to do with Christmas and nothing to do with the concert hall. Working at an Omaha advertising agency, he wrote the music for the trucker character C.W. McCall, voiced by his colleague William Fries, and the pair's "Convoy" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the week of 10 January 1976. SESAC named Davis its country music writer of the year that same year.

The standing that came with a number one bought him room for a much harder sell. Davis wanted to record instrumental music that set eighteenth-century forms against electric bass, drum kit and synthesiser, and the major labels would not distribute it. So he distributed it himself. American Gramaphone, founded in 1974 and named as a deadpan play on Deutsche Grammophon, has since grown into one of the largest independent labels in the American music business. The first Fresh Aire album appeared in 1975 under the Mannheim Steamroller name, which Davis lifted from the Mannheim roller — an eighteenth-century device in which a rising melodic line crescendos over a held bass figure. Keyboardist Jackson Berkey was the other founding half of the group.

The Christmas record the industry advised against

Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, released in 1984, reset the whole enterprise. Davis has said that at the time "many in the music industry said focusing on Christmas just wouldn't work". What followed instead was a catalogue in which the nine best-selling titles are all holiday records. The act's 2026 publicity puts cumulative sales above 41 million albums, of which 31.5 million are Christmas releases; the encyclopaedia record of US-only sales stands at 28 million. The RIAA certifications behind those claims include four multi-platinum and eight platinum awards, with Davis collecting his nineteenth gold record in 2010.

Radio did much of the work. Talk host Rush Limbaugh used the Christmas arrangements as bumper music, which carried the group to an audience that classical-crossover marketing would never have reached, and made it one of the most requested holiday acts on American radio.

The non-seasonal work continued in parallel. The Fresh Aire series eventually ran to seven volumes; Fresh Aire 7, released on 7 November 1990 and organised entirely around the number seven — the seven colours of the rainbow, the seven metals of alchemy, the seven chakras — won the Grammy for best new age album in 1991. Later studio projects moved further afield, among them Exotic Spaces in 2019, which set instruments from outside the Western tradition against the familiar Mannheim textures.

Two companies and a fifty-day calendar

The Christmas tour has run every year since the first one followed the 1984 album, and the scale of it is the unusual part. Rather than one ensemble crossing the country, Mannheim Steamroller fields two touring companies — nicknamed the red and green companies — working different regions at the same time. Each carries 15 musicians playing more than 20 instruments, and in many cities a local orchestra is contracted for the single night.

The 2026 run was announced on 20 July 2026 and opens on 11 November at the Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater in St Petersburg, Florida, closing on 30 December at the Pablo Center at the Confluence in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The published schedule lists 87 performances across Florida, the Southeast, Southwest, Midwest and West Coast, in performing-arts centres and theatres rather than arenas. Davis directs and co-produces with ICON LIVE. The billing — the longest-running concert tour in the entertainment industry — is the company's own, and no one appears to have contested it. "Now, more than 40 years later, we are still going strong," Davis said in the announcement. "I want to thank our fans for making us part of their holiday tradition."

Where things stand in 2026

Davis published a memoir, Chip Davis Sticking Around, on 1 September 2026, sold through the group's own store. It covers the period before Mannheim Steamroller existed as much as the decades since — the search for a sound that blended old forms with new recording technology, and the rejections, reinventions and financial exposure that came with releasing it independently.

His recent recording work has moved away from the orchestral-rock template towards something quieter. The Ambience Series arrived on the streaming platforms in two instalments: Bird Song on 21 March 2025 and Night Song on 3 September 2025.

The broadcast footprint grew in 2025 as well. SiriusXM launched a dedicated Mannheim Steamroller channel on 4 November 2025 as part of a 25-channel seasonal lineup, available on the app through 26 December, with Davis hosting and the programming drawing on the Fresh Aire catalogue alongside the Christmas records. Separately, Davis has for years hosted a 24-hour radio programme, An American Christmas, carried on 24 and 25 December by WestStar Multimedia across hundreds of stations.

What the show is now

Reviewing the Music Center at Strathmore date on 28 November 2025 for BroadwayWorld, Elliot Lanes clocked the evening at two hours and ten minutes with a single interval. Six fully logged setlists from the 2025 run average 26 songs including the encore. The programme opens with "Aire on a G String"; "Carol of the Bells" normally ends the main set and "Deck the Halls" most often finishes the night, with "Silent Night" in the encore. In between sit both the renaissance and the rock readings of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen", Handel's "Hallelujah", excerpts from The Nutcracker, holiday standards such as "Feliz Navidad" and "Let It Snow", and Davis originals including "Traditions of Christmas", "Harvest Dance", "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" and "Pass the Keg".

The Strathmore company was led by Mark Angor conducting and playing violin, with Logan Mitchell on percussion and recorder, Tom Sharp on drums and percussion, Christopher Forte on guitar and bass, Anna Lackaff on keyboards and Jackson Tower on harpsichord, backed by a nine-piece local orchestra that had two hours of rehearsal. Lanes praised the hired players' professionalism under those conditions, named "Traditions of Christmas" as the high point of the evening, and singled out lighting cues timed exactly to "Carol of the Bells".

The audience verdict is not unanimous. Among ticket buyers posting about the 2025 shows, several paying over $90 a seat described the production as underwhelming, the projected video as dated and the stage as sparse. Others who went expecting that, having read the complaints, came away satisfied — the recurring note in the positive reviews is the quality of the playing and the enthusiasm of musicians working a seven-week sprint. There is no support act; the ensemble carries the whole evening.

The show, now

The current show runs a little over two hours with one interval — the Strathmore date on 28 November 2025 was timed at two hours and ten minutes — and averages 26 pieces including the encore, based on the fully logged setlists from the 2025 run. Each of the two touring companies carries 15 musicians playing more than 20 instruments, often augmented by a locally contracted orchestra of around nine players who get roughly two hours of rehearsal on the day; there is no support act. The programme opens with "Aire on a G String", works through Davis originals such as "Traditions of Christmas" and "Harvest Dance", the renaissance and rock versions of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen", Handel's "Hallelujah", Nutcracker excerpts and standards including "Feliz Navidad" and "Let It Snow", builds to "Carol of the Bells" at the end of the main set and usually finishes with "Deck the Halls", with "Silent Night" in the encore. Staging is projected film and lighting cued to the music rather than scenery; the reviewer at Strathmore picked out the lighting on "Carol of the Bells" as the most precise element of the night and praised the hired orchestra's work under minimal rehearsal. Audience reaction splits on the production rather than the playing: some 2025 ticket buyers paying more than $90 a seat called the video content dated and the stage sparse, while others rated the musicianship and the light show highly enough to make the concert an annual fixture.
