The Montería kid who turned a guitar-less bachata into a stadium booking

Manuel Turizo has spent a decade converting soft-voiced Caribbean pop into one of Latin music's most portable catalogues; in April 2026 he released his fifth album, Apambichao, and on 8 November he plays the halftime show at the NFL's Madrid game in the Bernabéu.

Montería, and a plan to be a vet

Manuel Turizo Zapata was born on 12 April 2000 in Montería, on Colombia's Caribbean side. Music was household business — his father and his older brother Julián are both musicians — and as a child he took singing lessons from a Cuban teacher. The intended career was veterinary medicine, which lasted until it didn't.

He self-released Baila Conmigo and Vámonos in 2016 with Julián writing and producing alongside him. The record that changed the arithmetic arrived in March 2017: Una Lady Como Tú, a slow, almost conversational reggaeton track that passed 1.4 billion YouTube views and 235 million Spotify streams inside a year and made him a known quantity across Latin America before he had turned eighteen.

The template was set early and he has barely deviated from it. Turizo sings quietly, close to the microphone, over rhythms borrowed from bachata, merengue and reggaeton rather than from the harder end of urbano. It is a register that has aged well as Latin pop has drifted away from aggression.

Four albums to the one that travelled furthest

ADN, his debut album, came in 2019 and leaned on the collaborators available to a fast-rising act — Ozuna, Nicky Jam, Anuel AA. Vaina Loca with Ozuna, in 2018, had already given him his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100; Sola, in 2019, became his first number one on Billboard's Latin Airplay chart. Dopamina followed in 2021.

Then came La Bachata, released on 26 May 2022 and later folded into the album 2000. Its co-writer Edgar Barrera has said the absence of the lead guitar — bachata's defining instrument — was not a plan but an accident of the final mix, and the gap is exactly what makes the record sound like nothing else in the genre. Electronic riffs and an R&B vocal line sit where the guitar should be. It reached number one on Latin Airplay, spent fifteen weeks atop the chart in Argentina, peaked at number six on the Billboard Global 200 and crossed into the Hot 100 at number 67. Certifications ran to 22-times platinum (Latin) in the United States, 19-times platinum in Spain and two-times diamond plus three-times platinum in Mexico.

El Merengue, his track with Marshmello, pushed the same instinct further into dance territory. The album 201 arrived in 2024 and was toured as Apartamento 201, a production built around the conceit of a flat rather than a conventional stage set. That tour picked up a nomination for Best Latin Tour at the Los40 Music Awards in 2025.

Apambichao: a record about a place

The fifth studio album, Apambichao, was released on 9 April 2026 — fifteen tracks running about 37 minutes, on La Industria Inc. with distribution by Sony Music Entertainment US Latin. Te Hacen Falta Dos served as the lead single.

The title comes from pambiche, the slower Dominican merengue style; in Colombian usage apambichao describes living unhurried. The record moves between merengue, bachata, reggae and Colombian folk forms, and Turizo has said it is the first time he has worked directly with traditional Colombian music, calling it "something I really like and consume a lot" and "one of the most novel things about this album".

It is also the most crowded album he has made. Maluma appears on the title track, alongside Emilia, Xavi, Dei V, Dálmata, Luis Alfonso and an archival contribution from the late vallenato singer Diomedes Díaz, with Ovy on the Drums among the producers. Turizo's explanation for the volume of guests is procedural rather than strategic: this was the point at which the collaborations already recorded could all be let out at once. The framing matters — rather than another pan-Latin pop set, the album insists on Colombian and Caribbean specificity, which is a notable choice for an artist whose streaming base is global.

October 2026: the Bernabéu booking

The largest single engagement of his career was confirmed on 9 October 2026. Turizo will headline the American Express halftime show at the 2026 NFL Madrid Game, Cincinnati Bengals against Atlanta Falcons, on Sunday 8 November at 3.30pm CET inside the Bernabéu. His comment on the announcement was brief — a pleasure to be involved, with surprises promised for the crowd. The performance will be broadcast in Spain on DAZN, Cuatro and Mediaset Infinity. It is one of a record seven halftime shows the NFL is staging across its 2026 international games in seven countries and four continents, a run that also includes the Jonas Brothers in Melbourne, Ricky Martin and Pedro Sampaio in Rio, Burna Boy in Paris and Cage the Elephant in Munich.

Spain has become something close to a second base. He joined La Voz Kids España as a coach for its tenth season in 2025, and the contestant from his team, Lucas Paulano, won; he is slated to return for the twelfth season in 2027. The Spanish summer festival circuit has carried much of his 2026 touring.

Alongside that, his own dates continue through the end of the year: Auditorio Benito Juárez in Zapopan on 29 October, Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas on 30 October, Coca-Cola Flow Fest in Mexico City on 28 November, Estadio San Marcos in Lima on 4 December and Gran Arena Monticello in Chile on 7 December. Two Miami appearances fall in October — the Kaseya Center on 17 October as part of the iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina bill with Anuel AA, Myke Towers, Farruko and Blessd, and the James L. Knight Center on 22 October.

What the current show actually does

2026 has been a festival year more than an arena year. Logged performances run from Teatro Eslava in Madrid on 9 March, through the Feria Nacional de San Marcos in Aguascalientes on 5 May, Sueños in Chicago's Grant Park on 23 May, Música en Grande in Torrelavega on 26 June, Morriña in A Coruña on 24 July, a headline night at the Plaza de Toros in Melilla on 29 July, Starlite in Marbella on 30 July, the Concert Music Festival at Chiclana de la Frontera on 31 July, Baja Beach Fest on 9 August and Dale Mixx in Monterrey on 15 August.

The sets flex hard to fit the slot. The Aguascalientes palenque appearance, starting at 11pm, ran nine songs; the Sueños set ran thirteen. What does not change is the proportion of the show given over to tracks where he is the guest rather than the lead — roughly half of it — which is the practical consequence of a career built on features.

The staging language comes from the Apartamento 201 production, which the venues billed as a hybrid of concert, film and theatre: the stage dressed as the rooms of flat 201, with Turizo moving between them among dancers, musicians and extras. Festival stages strip that back to the band and the lighting rig, and the Apambichao material is being worked into the same frame rather than replacing it.

The show, now

The current show sits between two formats. Headline nights inherit the Apartamento 201 production, which venues described as a cinematic staging in which the set is dressed as the rooms of flat 201 and Turizo works through them with dancers, musicians and extras rather than standing at a front-of-stage mic point; the Navarra Arena billing for the 16 October 2025 date framed it as a deliberate blur between concert, film and theatre. On festival stages — the bulk of 2026 — that scaffolding comes off and the band carries it. Set lengths track the slot: nine songs at the Feria Nacional de San Marcos palenque in Aguascalientes on 5 May 2026 with an 11pm start, thirteen at Sueños in Chicago on 23 May. The Sueños running order is a fair model of the shape: a band intro, a shortened Apambichao to open, then a run that alternates his own singles with the collaborations he is a guest on — Inglés en Miami, Desconocidos, La Nota, Vaina Loca, Una Lady Como Tú, En Privado, La Bachata, Una Cerveza, De Lunes a Lunes and Vagabundo — before El Merengue closes with an extended outro. Roughly half the set is therefore material credited to other lead artists, which is unusual for a headliner and reflects how the catalogue was built. Most of the autumn 2026 dates are shared bills rather than support-act shows: the Kaseya Center night on 17 October is the iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina line-up with Anuel AA, Myke Towers, Farruko and Blessd, Dallas on 30 October runs with Eladio Carrión, Chencho and Kapo, and the Lima stadium date on 4 December is billed alongside Marc Anthony, Fonseca and Kapo.
