The daughter who waited until she was 24

Maria Rita Camargo Mariano was born on 9 September 1977 in São Paulo, to the singer Elis Regina and the pianist and arranger César Camargo Mariano. Her mother died when she was a small child, which left her with a surname that arrived long before any of her own work did. She was named after the family friend Rita Lee.

Rather than move straight into music, she left the country to study at New York University, taking communications and Latin American studies, and worked for a time as a journalist on a magazine aimed at teenagers. She did not sing professionally until she was 24 — a late start by the standards of Brazilian popular music, and one she has always presented as a choice rather than an accident.

That delay is the frame for everything that followed. For twenty years she avoided the obvious move of building a career out of her mother's catalogue, and the 2026 tour is the point at which she stopped avoiding it.

The records

The self-titled debut arrived in 2003 and opened with a Milton Nascimento song. It went platinum and sold past a million copies worldwide, which is a rare outcome for a first MPB album by a singer with no prior recordings. At the 2004 Latin Grammy Awards she took Best New Artist and Best MPB Album — she remains the only Brazilian to have won the Best New Artist category.

Segundo followed in 2005, and then Samba Meu in 2007 marked the turn towards samba proper, a move that produced Latin Grammy wins in the samba and pagode category in 2008, 2014 and 2018, alongside MPB album wins in 2006 and 2013. Elo came in 2011, the same year she appeared as a featured voice on Calle 13's Latinoamérica. Her most recent studio album, Amor e Música, was released in 2018 and was certified platinum. Brazilian press covering the current tour counts eight Latin Grammys in total.

The first Redescobrir sits in the middle of that run. Released in 2012 as an album of 28 tracks with a national tour and an audiovisual recording behind it, it was explicitly a tribute to Elis Regina. The 2026 sequel reuses the title and very little of the intention.

What broke

In 2024, after more than twenty years of continuous work, Maria Rita was diagnosed with burnout and came off the road. She has since described the period as years of a great deal of shadow and very little light, and has been unusually plain about the mechanics of it: the sensation, she said, was of things slipping out of her emotional control, accompanied by impostor syndrome and doubt about whether her own work was genuine.

The trigger was concrete. A lorry carrying her stage equipment — the accumulation of more than two decades of investment — was stolen. In a July 2026 interview she put it simply: she was already holding herself together with very little, and with the robbery she broke.

What kept her off stage afterwards was performance anxiety of a specific, practical kind. She has talked about being afraid of saying good evening to an audience, of forgetting lyrics, of freezing in front of people. The gap ran to nearly two years, and she has said she considered not performing again at all.

How the new show was assembled

The show came out of an image rather than a setlist. During the worst of it she pictured an entirely white stage with herself at the centre in red, and only later read the image as a heart — including its imperfections. That became the visual brief. She directs the show herself, with scenography by Batman Zavareze built in collaboration with her.

The distinction she draws between the two volumes is the point of the whole project. The 2012 version honoured her mother; this one is about her own recovery, and she has described the tour as a search for her mother's comfort — going into the inheritance deliberately instead of working around it. Her son Antonio plays in the touring band, which puts three generations of the family inside music written for a grandmother he never met.

There is no new studio album attached. Redescobrir Vol. 2 is a live proposition: her own catalogue and Elis Regina's, re-sung by a 48-year-old rather than a 34-year-old, with the arrangements pulled back towards intimacy.

Where the tour stands now

The show was first put in front of an audience on 13 March 2026 at the Auditório Araújo Vianna in Porto Alegre — Elis Regina's home city — as a pre-launch rather than a tour opening. The national run proper began on 18 July 2026 in Brasília, at the Na Praia festival, on a weekend whose bill also carried Martinho da Vila with Mart'nália.

Since then it has worked through the interior of São Paulo, including Ribeirão Preto and Campinas, before the capitals. São Paulo was Vibra on 15 August 2026, with doors at 8pm and the show at 10pm. Belo Horizonte was the Arena Hall in Savassi on 18 September 2026 at 9.30pm, with tickets from R$96. Rio de Janeiro is Vivo Rio on 10 October 2026, and the run continues to December, with a return to Porto Alegre before the year ends.

The two dates currently on general sale are the tail of that schedule rather than the whole of it; the tour has been booked in clusters as it moves between regions, and capital-city dates have gone on sale with bank pre-sale windows ahead of general release.

What the reviews and the room say

Coverage of the return has been dominated by the biography rather than the musicianship, which is a reasonable reflection of what audiences are turning up for. The Porto Alegre pre-launch was reported as an intimate show carried by memory and by the weight of the repertoire, and the singer herself has been the most quotable source on it — she has said she rediscovered the value of calm and silence, and the smile and the arms of her children.

Two songs recur in the reporting as the emotional hinges of the night: Cais and O Bêbado e a Equilibrista, both fixed points in Elis Regina's catalogue, and Maria Maria, which she has acknowledged singing while visibly affected. The audience response described across the tour is less about spectacle than about a room watching someone do in public the thing she was afraid she could no longer do.
