Mavi Gri: the Kadıköy five-piece who made melancholy a touring business

Formed by two university friends in Istanbul in 2016, Mavi Gri have built one of Turkey's busiest alternative-rock live operations — close to a billion Spotify streams, more than 220 logged shows, and a run of 2026 singles that kept arriving while the band stayed on the road.

Two students, one city, one name

Mavi Gri began in Kadıköy, on the Asian side of Istanbul, in 2016, when Mehmed Akif Alkan and Yusuf Kurtucu — then university students — started writing together. Drummer Halef Binici joined soon after, and the line-up reached its present shape with keyboard player Engincan Onar, who came in during 2020, and bassist Cenk Sinör. Alkan has described the early period as a group of friends playing covers before they had anything of their own, putting the first originals out over the internet rather than through an industry route.

The name translates as blue grey, and the band have given it two readings. One is the city itself: a hard, grinding Istanbul underneath a very good sky. The other, which Alkan set out in a March 2025 interview with the Adnan Menderes University student paper, is emotional — blue for calm and hope, grey for the melancholy and longing that most of the songs are built on. Alkan finished an engineering degree and went into music instead, and he writes from his own life, from what friends tell him, and from fragments of strangers overheard in ordinary places.

Alkan is the band's main writer and composer, and also ran the comic social-media output that did much of the early promotional work. Onar's arrangements have since become the other identifiable hand on the records.

The records

The first single was Ben Sende Yandım. The debut album, İlkyaz Yağmuru, followed in 2018 with eleven songs and a guitar-forward sound the band have since moved away from. Speaking to the magazine Dergy in October 2020, Alkan, Kurtucu and Binici said the music had softened into something between pop-rock and indie, and that they intended to keep issuing singles and gather them into an album later — which is more or less what happened.

The lockdown years did the heavy lifting. O Ben Olamam passed four million views on nothing more than a lyric video, a result the band admitted they had not expected. Dünyanın En Güzel Kızı became a long-running hit from 2021. Altüst Olmuşum and Ölümle Yaşam Arasında are the two Alkan identifies as the turning points, spreading through social media and pulling in an audience well beyond the alternative scene; İlaç Ol Yaralarıma reached radio rotation, and placements in Turkish television drama widened the reach again.

The second album, Gök Mavi Yer Gri, arrived in 2022, alongside the live record Bostancı (Canlı). A collection titled Extras followed in 2023. The most substantial recent statement is MG, released on 20 December 2024 — Bedel, Çok Çok Seneler Önce, Bana Müsade, Yaban Çiçeğim with Serkan Tınmaz, Naparım Sen Yoksan with BKE, and Anlamsız Geceler as an outro — arranged by Onar with production work from Can VS. A Live Session release followed in 2025.

The commercial scale is unusual for a band that started by uploading songs themselves: their Spotify catalogue has passed 950 million streams, with Altüst Olmuşum alone above 255 million and Ölümle Yaşam Arasında above 150 million.

2026: singles instead of an album

Rather than follow MG with another album, Mavi Gri have spent 2026 releasing singles at a pace of roughly one every six to eight weeks, most of them shared with another name. Heybeli, with Murat Dalkılıç, came on 30 January 2026. Babasından Yaralı followed on 13 February 2026, written and sung with Murat Güneş. Gözlerin Lazım, a collaboration with Çodur, arrived on 15 May 2026 and has drawn around 800,000 Spotify plays. Bakmasaydım Sana, Dön, Kim Bilir and Lades complete the year's run, with Lades the most recent release listed on the band's streaming pages.

That is seven singles in a touring year, and it fits what Alkan said in March 2025 about working on new album material with different textures and instruments while expanding the number of cities the band play, including stripped-back acoustic shows. The album has not materialised; the collaborations have.

Standing on the circuit

Mavi Gri's position in Turkey is defined less by chart placings than by volume of work. Songkick's records list 227 past performances, concentrated in Istanbul with 36 shows, then Bursa with 19 and İzmir with 18, and just under 24,000 users signed up for alerts. Turkish music press describe them as among the most heavily gigging acts in the country, and the venue history bears that out: the Hayal Kahvesi chain, Dorock XL in Kadıköy, IF Performance Hall Beşiktaş, Jolly Joker Ankara, Zeytinli Rock Fest.

The 2026 summer was festival work. They played Trakya Müzik Festivali in Edirne on 2 August, Milyonfest Didim in Aydın on 5 September, and Food Vibe Fest in Eskişehir on 18 September, with a hotel-grounds show at Colossae Thermal in Denizli back on 17 May. The autumn run is denser and more urban: a sold-out night at SoldOut Performance Hall in İzmir on 16 October 2026, then the first day of Ritual Fest at Life Park in Istanbul on 17 October, on a bill with Göksel, Gazapizm, No1 and Sufle.

Beyond that, ticket agencies list The Bar Kaleiçi in Antalya on 22 October, Bahçeşehir Kültür Merkezi in Istanbul on 24 October, Artvin's Nihat Gökyiğit Kongre ve Kültür Merkezi on 31 October, Ardahan University on 1 November, Hayal Kahvesi Bursa on 7 November and Hayal Kahvesi İzmir on 4 December. Prices run from ₺249 for the smaller club dates to ₺1,400 for the Istanbul theatre show and the festival pass.

Their one documented appearance outside Turkey was the İstanbul Ekspres festival at De Centrale's Turbine Hall in Ghent on 24 November 2024, where the promoters introduced them as a five-piece working in 1990s rock with heavy guitar and unsparing lyrics.

What the audience turns up for

The pitch, as Turkish ticketing copy puts it, is acoustic-guitar-based writing dressed in modern pop arrangement — plain melodies, direct lyrics about separation and what is left afterwards, and a vocal delivered without ornament. It skews young, and it travels: the Artvin and Ardahan dates in late 2026 are the sort of bookings most Istanbul alternative bands never make.

Two live releases in four years — Bostancı (Canlı) in 2022 and Live Session in 2025 — suggest a band who regard the room as part of the material rather than a promotional obligation. Alkan's own pick for the best show they have played remains festAmal in Istanbul, for what he called the crowd's engagement.

The show, now

A Mavi Gri show in late 2026 is a headline club or theatre set by a five-piece with keyboards well forward in the mix, starting late by British habit: 20:00 after 19:00 doors at the Ghent festival show, 20:30 at the Bahçeşehir Kültür Merkezi in Istanbul on 24 October, 21:30 at Hayal Kahvesi Bursa on 7 November, 22:00 at The Bar Kaleiçi in Antalya on 22 October. None of the Turkish ticket agencies publish a running time or a support act for the club dates, and no verified setlist has been posted, so the shape of the set is best read off the band's own live releases — Bostancı (Canlı) from 2022 and Live Session from 2025 — and off the songs that carry the streaming numbers: Altüst Olmuşum, Ölümle Yaşam Arasında, Dünyanın En Güzel Kızı, O Ben Olamam, Ben Sende Yandım and İlaç Ol Yaralarıma, the last a radio staple. Festival slots work differently: at Ritual Fest's first day at Life Park in Istanbul on 17 October the band take a shared bill alongside Göksel, Gazapizm, No1 and Sufle, with the gates at 15:00. Demand is real rather than notional — the 16 October date at SoldOut Performance Hall in İzmir sold out, prices across the autumn run from ₺249 to ₺1,400, and nearly 24,000 people track the band's dates on Songkick. Promoters in Belgium framed them as a 1990s-rock proposition built on heavy guitar and unsoftened lyrics; Turkish sellers lead instead on acoustic-guitar writing and a direct, unadorned vocal, which is the version the younger Turkish crowds sing back.
