Sacked in April 1983, and never quite over it

Megadeth begin with a firing. Dave Mustaine was dismissed from Metallica on 11 April 1983 and had the next band running before the year was out. The name came off a pamphlet written by a California senator — 'the arsenal of megadeath can't be rid no matter what the peace treaties come to' — which Mustaine respelled and later glossed as standing for the annihilation of power.

The debut, 'Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!', arrived on Combat in 1985 and sounded like the work of people with something to settle. 'Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?' followed in 1986 and did the establishing: faster and more intricate than most of what surrounded it, with a title track whose bassline long outlived the record. From there the band were fixed in place as one of thrash's big four alongside Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax — a bracket that still shapes the routing, since Anthrax have been on the farewell bills all year.

The catalogue the set is still built from

'So Far, So Good... So What!' (1988), 'Rust in Peace' (1990), 'Countdown to Extinction' (1992) and 'Youthanasia' (1994) all went platinum, and two of them supply almost everything a Megadeth audience now turns up for. 'Rust in Peace' holds 'Holy Wars... The Punishment Due', 'Hangar 18' and 'Tornado of Souls'; 'Countdown to Extinction' holds 'Symphony of Destruction' and 'Sweating Bullets'. Three and a half decades on, those five songs are load-bearing — no 2026 setlist has gone out without them.

Industry recognition took considerably longer than the records did. Twelve Grammy nominations went past before 'Dystopia' won Best Metal Performance in 2017, and that remains the band's only win.

The lineup that arrived last, and the hands that ended it

Mustaine has been the one constant through a long churn of players. The four-piece closing the book is Mustaine on vocals and guitar, Teemu Mäntysaari on guitar, James LoMenzo on bass and Dirk Verbeuren on drums. Mäntysaari came in after Kiko Loureiro stepped away, and the final record is his only studio appearance with the band; for LoMenzo it was a first studio credit here since 'Endgame' in 2009. Reviewers of the 2026 shows have been consistent about this particular version of the group — the Montreal date drew the observation that the four have properly gelled.

The reason for stopping is physical and specific. Mustaine has Dupuytren's contracture in his hands, on top of a neck fused with metal plates and the numbness that came with it. 'It's already started, where it's kind of bunching up a little bit,' he said of the condition. 'All those bumps make it really painful to play.' He was 64 when the tour opened and decided to end the band midway through making the album, on the basis he had stated for years: 'I've always said that when I don't feel like I can do it anymore, that's going to be time for me to stop.' He has also ruled out the Slayer and Mötley Crüe pattern of announcing a last tour and then returning, and dismissed the idea of bringing former members back for the run, while allowing that a KISS- or ABBA-style avatar show is not out of the question.

A self-titled record, and a first number one at the finish

The album and the farewell were announced together on 14 August 2025. 'Megadeth' — the seventeenth studio album, self-titled at the end rather than the beginning — came out on 23 January 2026, produced by Mustaine with Chris Rakestraw and issued through BLKIIBLK and Frontiers Music. It was recorded across 2024 and 2025 at studios including One on One in North Hollywood and Sterling Sound in New Jersey. Four singles ran ahead of it: 'Tipping Point' on 3 October 2025, 'I Don't Care' on 14 November, 'Let There Be Shred' on 19 December and 'Puppet Parade' on 19 January 2026. The standard edition is ten tracks plus a version of 'Ride the Lightning', a song Mustaine co-wrote during his months in Metallica and has now finally cut under his own name.

Reviews split — Metacritic settled at 61 out of 100, in the mixed-to-average band. Commercially it did what none of the platinum records ever managed: number one on the Billboard 200 on 73,000 units, the first chart-topper of a 43-year career, arriving at the end of it. The day before release, the documentary 'Megadeth: Behind the Mask' went into cinemas on 22 January 2026, a 40-year retrospective built around a full playback of the new album with Mustaine talking through it track by track. His framing there was blunt: 'There's so many musicians that have come to the end of their career. Most of them don't get to go out on their own terms on top, and that's where I'm at.'

Where the farewell has got to

The tour opened on 15 February 2026 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, with Anthrax and Exodus on the Canadian leg. It has since taken in Latin America — the Movistar Arena in Bogotá on 27 April — and a European summer in which the band headlined Plateia Nerou in Athens on 30 May, with Sepultura and Sylosis beneath them. Then came a change of role: from late August they have been opening for Iron Maiden on the North American leg of Run for Your Lives, starting at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on 29 and 30 August, through Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal on 3 September and two nights at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey on 5 and 6 September, and finishing at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on 27 September and the Alamodome in San Antonio on 29 September.

None of this is a quick goodbye. Mustaine has spoken about another three to five years of touring before the last show, and the diary supports him. On 3 August 2026 the band announced Breakout: Hibernation of the Nations, a 24-date UK and European arena run from The O2 in Belfast on 9 March 2027 to Lisbon on 13 April, with Black Label Society and Testament supporting throughout. Eight of the dates are British: Belfast, then OVO Arena Wembley on 11 March, Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on the 12th, Co-op Live in Manchester on the 13th, Utilita Arena Cardiff on the 15th, the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on the 16th, bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham on the 18th and the First Direct Arena in Leeds on the 19th. They are the first Megadeth headline shows in Britain since 2015. General sale ran from 7 August 2026, and at the Hydro standard tickets were listed between £72.60 and £184.

Two shapes of set

The headline show runs to roughly 17 songs and about 90 minutes including the encore, and it is unapologetically weighted to the back catalogue. Opening night in Victoria led with 'Tipping Point' and gave the new album exactly one more slot — 'I Don't Care', sixth — before spending everything else on 'Hangar 18', 'Dread and the Fugitive Mind', 'Sweating Bullets', 'Angry Again', 'Wake Up Dead', 'In My Darkest Hour', 'Countdown to Extinction', 'Dystopia', 'Skin o' My Teeth', 'Tornado of Souls', 'Trust', 'Symphony of Destruction', 'Mechanix', 'Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?' and 'Holy Wars... The Punishment Due' to close.

Production is thin by design. The Athens review described no elaborate staging at all — the band's logo filling the backdrop and Vic Rattlehead brought out twice for comic effect — in front of more than 10,000 people, with continuous circle pits, flares burning through the crowd and security taking a notably relaxed line. Mustaine's voice was judged to have kept its character while losing strength against earlier decades, and his playing was called admirable given the state of his hands. The one complaint from that night was the absence of anything at all from 'Youthanasia'.

The Iron Maiden support slot is a different proposition. At Harrison on 5 September the band went on at 7.10pm for about 50 minutes and nine songs, still opening with 'Tipping Point' and closing with 'Holy Wars', and used the compression to slip in tour debuts of 'She-Wolf' and 'The Conjuring'. The reviewer there reported crowd-surfing from the first song to the last.
