The profile · researched 4 October 2026

Balanchine in the subtropics: Miami City Ballet starts over under Gonzalo Garcia

Founded in 1985 on a Balanchine inheritance, Miami City Ballet has spent 2026 changing hands. Gonzalo Garcia, only the third artistic director in the company's history, opens his first fully programmed season on 16 October 2026.

A company willed into existence in 1985

Miami City Ballet began as the project of one patron. The philanthropist Toby Lerner Ansin established the company in 1985 and installed Edward Villella — a New York City Ballet principal of the Balanchine years — as founding artistic director. That single decision set the aesthetic for four decades: speed, musical attack, a repertory anchored in George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins rather than in the nineteenth-century classics.

Four decades on the organisation is substantial rather than boutique. It works from the Ophelia & Juan Js. Roca Center in Miami Beach, carries an international ensemble of more than fifty dancers and 88 active ballets, and gives over 75 performances a year as resident company across Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. The company reports reaching roughly 125,000 people annually and awarding more than $650,000 in scholarships through Miami City Ballet School, which teaches ages three to eighteen on Balanchine method. Touring has taken the repertory to the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, New York City Center, Jacob's Pillow and stages in Europe, Central America and South America.

The handover, and how it was run

Lourdes Lopez, another former New York City Ballet principal, succeeded Villella and ran the company for more than a decade. The Lopez years pushed the house beyond its inheritance: by March 2024 the critic Orlando Taquechel, reviewing a Spring Mix of Balanchine's Agon, Alonzo King's Following the Subtle Current Upstream and a world premiere by Ricardo Amarante, described the troupe as being at the climax of its consolidation as a contemporary ballet company, singling out Dawn Atkins, Stanislav Olshanskyi, Taylor Naturkas and Renan Cerdeiro.

Replacing her took an international search. The board canvassed stakeholders and industry figures, generated around seventy prospective names, considered forty applicants and narrowed to two finalists. On 16 June 2025 it announced Gonzalo Garcia as artistic director on a five-year contract, effective 11 August 2025 — the third person to hold the post since 1985, arriving as the company moved into its 40th anniversary season.

Who Garcia is

Garcia, 45 at the time of his appointment, is from Zaragoza in Spain. He took the gold medal at the Prix de Lausanne in 1995 at fifteen, joined San Francisco Ballet in 1998 and was made a principal there at twenty-two. He moved to New York City Ballet as a principal in 2007, danced there until retiring in 2022, and then worked as NYCB's repertory director and on the faculty of the School of American Ballet. He has relocated to Miami with his husband Ezra Hurwitz, an Emmy-winning film director and a former Miami City Ballet dancer.

His stated priorities are pedagogical as much as curatorial. Asked about the job in June 2025, Garcia framed it around the studio: he wanted to keep teaching, and to work out how to prepare the company's dancers for careers not only in Miami but internationally. He also talked about getting Miami's own population onto the stage and expanding the company's digital output, while holding the Balanchine and Robbins line. For the season he has built, the pitch is blunter — his goal, he said when the programming was unveiled on 29 January 2026, was for the inaugural season to be thrilling and beautiful.

The work that carries the name

The repertory is the asset. Balanchine's Jewels is a case in point: the company brought the 1967 triptych to the Adrienne Arsht Center on 27–29 March 2026 and the Kravis Center on 3 April 2026, in Barbara Karinska's original designs — green bodices and falling tulle for Emeralds, scarlet leotards for Rubies, crystal-beaded tops and powder-puff tutus for Diamonds — with Hannah Fischer, Alexander Peters, Cameron Catazaro, Taylor Naturkas and Jennifer Lauren among the principals. Reviewing it, Guillermo Perez noted the demand built into the structure, including the slow ten-minute pas de deux that opens Diamonds.

Alongside that sits a commissioning habit. Justin Peck's Heatscape, made for the company as a response to the Wynwood Walls, opened the 40th anniversary season in October–November 2025 on a Peck-devoted bill. The anniversary year ran to eight programmes, took in 21 Nutcracker performances with live orchestra and the returning Land of Sweets experience in December 2025, and added the Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale to the company's standing venue partnerships.

Its centrepiece was Alexei Ratmansky's Roses from the South: Three Waltzes for Toby, premiered in February 2026 on the Into the Magic City programme — Johann Strauss II waltzes in Arnold Schönberg's arrangements, made for Ansin's 85th birthday and underwritten by the Ansin Foundation.

October 2026: where things actually stand

The company's most recent appearance was in New York, not Florida. Miami City Ballet danced Roses from the South on Programme 5 of New York City Center's 23rd Fall for Dance festival on 2–3 October 2026, giving the Ratmansky its New York premiere — a tribute to the founder presented on a festival bill rather than at home.

The last full home programme before that was less kindly received. ¡Vamos! To the Beach, at the Arsht Center on 1 May 2026, put Paul Taylor's Company B beside Durante Verzola's world premiere Grand Glittering Gershwin and Twyla Tharp's Deuce Coupe. Ballet Herald rated the dancers as the evening's strength — immensely skilled, on a par with elite companies in the north-east — while finding Company B dated and Deuce Coupe short of ignition, with the Verzola premiere the one work that landed. The complaint was with programming rather than personnel: a company performing well below its capacity, and a bill whose title promised a connection to Miami's mixed-language city that the stage did not deliver. Chase Swatosh, Steven Loch, Cameron Catazaro and Hannah Fischer were named among the dancers.

That is the context for Garcia's first season, which the Miami Herald described on 20 September 2026 as looking backward and forward at once — keeping the Balanchine foundation while adding company premieres, new commissions and work by current choreographers.

The 2026/27 season on sale

Five programmes are booked across the three South Florida houses. American Rhythms opens 16–25 October 2026 with Balanchine's Allegro Brillante, the company premiere of Robbins' 1958 N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz — the ballet in sneakers, re-costumed by GapStudio under Zac Posen — and a world premiere, Push the Buttons of the Civilized, by the Miami-born Tony Award-winning choreographer Patricia Delgado, a former company principal, made with the Miami musician Emily Estefan.

Balanchine's The Nutcracker follows on 11–27 December 2026 in Miami with live orchestra and its Miami-specific setting. Christopher Wheeldon's full-length Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, to Joby Talbot's score, gets its company premiere 25 February–21 March 2027 across Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Icons & Innovators runs 26 March–18 April 2027 in all three cities, pairing Balanchine's Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2 with Justin Peck's Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes and a world premiere by the New York City Ballet principal Tiler Peck. The season closes with Ratmansky's Swan Lake, 29 April–23 May 2027.

The show, now

The current show is American Rhythms, the season opener, running 16–25 October 2026: three short ballets on one bill — Balanchine's Allegro Brillante, Robbins' N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz in its company premiere with new GapStudio costumes designed under Zac Posen, and Patricia Delgado's world premiere Push the Buttons of the Civilized, made with Emily Estefan. In Miami it plays the Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Arsht Center on 16 and 17 October at 7.30pm and 18 October at 1pm, with tickets quoted from $37.44 to $312.39 including fees; it then moves to the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale on 24 October at 7.30pm and 25 October at 1pm and 6.30pm. There is no support act — a mixed bill of this kind runs as three separate works with intervals, and the Arsht listing had not published a run time at the time of writing. Staging is repertory-standard rather than spectacular: Karinska-era classicism for the Balanchine, street clothes and sneakers for the Robbins. On recent form, the dancing is the draw. Ballet Herald, reviewing the May 2026 closing programme at the Arsht, called the dancers immensely skilled and on a par with elite north-eastern companies while arguing the company was performing well short of its capacity and that the programming was too conservative for the city it works in — which is the specific charge Garcia's first season, with its Robbins premiere and two local-artist commissions, is built to answer.
