The profile · researched 26 September 2026

The £77 gig that became a ninety-date tour: Ben Bowman's twenty years as Michael Jackson

Ben Bowman left drama college to impersonate Michael Jackson for £77 a night and now fronts the biggest Jackson tribute on the British touring circuit, with a Cuffe & Taylor diary stretching from September 2026 into December 2027 and arena bookings in Newcastle, Liverpool, Nottingham and Leeds.

Sheppey, a friend's question, and a course abandoned

Bowman grew up on the Isle of Sheppey, off the north Kent coast, with his mother's vinyl in the house. The turn came when he was 16 or 17: a friend asked how Jackson's new single went, he sang a couple of lines of "You Rock My World", and she told him he sounded like the record. That is the origin story he has given in interviews, and it is unusually specific about the moment a voice became a living.

He was studying drama at college when someone told him there was £77 a night going for Jackson work in the West End. He worked out he could earn more doing that than finishing the course, left, and began booking venues himself. By the time he spoke to the press around the show's Palladium date in 2019 he was 33 and had been performing as Jackson for fourteen years, which puts the start of it around 2005.

June 2009, and what a tribute act becomes when the subject dies

The day after Jackson died in June 2009, Bowman went on in front of a crowd of roughly 700. He has described the audience that night as weeping, and he still talks about the screamers and the criers as the reaction he wants, on the grounds that it means the thing is landing. It is a candid position for a performer whose job is to stand in for someone who cannot appear.

The preparation he describes is closer to theatre than to pub circuit work: around two hours to get ready, of which roughly 45 minutes is makeup, plus a glued-on wig, and vocal and physical warm-ups before a show he calls a real workout. The period he chases is the Bad era, which he rates as Jackson's peak as a concert act and the point at which Jackson took full charge of his own manufacture.

The show itself: James Baker, and the Palladium on 6 April 2019

The touring production is Michael Starring Ben, put together by producer James Baker. Its West End date, the London Palladium on 6 April 2019, is the marker the show's own publicity still leans on, alongside the Royal Albert Hall. Reviewing that Palladium night, Lee Cogger gave it four stars and counted the company: Bowman, a five-piece live band, two backing vocalists and four dancers. What impressed him most was mechanical rather than sentimental — Bowman dances hard and sings live without audibly running out of air. His complaint was the dancers drifting out of time with each other against otherwise tight work on stage.

A month earlier, at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on 8 March 2019, Caroline Worswick also gave it four stars and described a running order that walks through the catalogue: "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" and "Another Part of Me" to open, then "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", "Earth Song", "Beat It" and "Dirty Diana", with a Jackson 5 medley in the second half before "Bad", "Human Nature" and "Smooth Criminal". Her high point was "Billie Jean", built around the hat, the sparkly jacket and the slow business of pulling on the glove. Her low point was "Thriller", where she expected staging to match the video and got a couple of ghouls in the aisles.

Bowman has said the running order had been largely unchanged for four and a half years by 2019, and the evidence suggests that discipline has held. A setlist logged at the Lighthouse in Poole on 11 April 2025 runs twenty songs in two sets plus an encore, still opening on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", still reaching "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", a four-song Jackson-era medley, "Bad", "Human Nature", "Smooth Criminal", "Thriller" and "Man in the Mirror" after the interval, and closing on "Billie Jean" and "Heal the World".

Where it stands in September 2026

The commercial position now is the story. The show is promoted by Cuffe & Taylor with James Baker Productions, and the promoter's own diary runs from Reid Hall in Forfar on 26 September 2026 through to Sheffield City Hall on 10 December 2027 — more than eighty listed dates, several of them two-show days. Recent shows logged include Theatre Royal Winchester on 18 January 2026, the Utilita Arena in Newcastle upon Tyne on 22 February 2026 and Stockport Plaza on 24 April 2026; the Bridgewater Hall date on 23 January 2026 put it back in the Manchester room where it was reviewed in 2019.

The arena bookings are the clearest sign of scale. The M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool has it on 18 February 2027 with doors at 6.30pm, Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on 19 February, the Brighton Centre on 21 February, indigo at The O2 in London on 19 March and the first direct arena in Leeds on 3 October 2027. Demand in the theatres is running ahead of that: on the promoter's listing, G Live in Guildford (1 October 2026), the Regal in Redruth (2 October), Harrogate Royal Hall (9 October), Sheffield City Hall (15 October), York Barbican (16 October), the Ashcroft in Croydon (24 October), the New Theatre in Cardiff (25 October), De Montfort Hall in Leicester (30 October), the Hawth in Crawley (4 November) and both Southend shows on 28 November are already flagged sold out. Derby Arena sold out on 31 May 2025.

It travels beyond the mainland too. The National Opera House in Wexford had it on 28 March 2025 at €33.50 plus fee, and the Gaiety Theatre in Douglas has two nights on 27 and 28 October 2026 at £32 standard, £29 restricted view and £128 for a box, all plus a 5% booking fee.

What the billing claims, and what it doesn't

Cuffe & Taylor call it the largest touring tribute to Michael Jackson in the UK today, which the date sheet supports, and describe it as award-winning without naming an award on any page checked — so the trophy, if there is one, is unverified. The press quotes recycled across venue listings are older and consistent: the BBC's Bridget Metcalf called it one of the most highly polished, tight, funky and visually accurate shows she had seen in a long time, and the Kent Messenger's John Nurden wrote that it is eerie how the spirit of Jackson seems to come alive, and that Bowman holds it for virtually the whole of the two-plus hours.

Every venue listing carries the same line in small type: this is a tribute production not associated with or endorsed by the Michael Jackson Estate. It sits alongside the trademark symbol the production uses on its own title. Liverpool's arena listing also requires under-14s to be accompanied by an adult, and the Isle of Man dates set that line at 16 — a reminder that a substantial part of the audience for a 1980s catalogue is now people who were never old enough to see the original.

The show, now

The current show is a two-hour evening in two halves with an interval and an encore, no support act on any listing checked — the band and dancers carry the whole night. The Poole setlist of 11 April 2025 ran twenty songs: ten before the break opening on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" and taking in "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", "Earth Song" and "Dirty Diana"; eight after it, through "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", a four-song Jackson-era medley, "Bad", "Human Nature", "Smooth Criminal", "Thriller" and "Man in the Mirror"; then "Billie Jean" and "Heal the World" as the encore. Staging is costume changes, a heavy lighting design and choreography rebuilt from Jackson's own concert footage rather than video re-enactment, with the "Billie Jean" glove reveal treated as the set piece — the moment both reviewers who rated the show four stars picked out as the best thing in it. The consistent praise is physical: Bowman sings live through the dance numbers without audibly losing breath, and holds the room for virtually the full two-plus hours. The consistent criticism is around him — dancers losing time with one another at the Palladium, and a "Thriller" that settled for a couple of ghouls in the aisles when the room wanted the full production. Audiences skew wider in age than the catalogue suggests, with young people up and dancing in the stalls in Manchester. Tickets on the Isle of Man dates in October 2026 are £32 standard and £29 restricted view plus fees; the Liverpool arena date opens doors at 6.30pm.
