Not Dead Yet: Spamalot's Second Life on the American Road

Eric Idle's Tony-winning adaptation of Monty Python and the Holy Grail is in the closing weeks of a North American tour that opened in Cleveland on 1 December 2025 and finishes in West Palm Beach on 15 November 2026. Critics are split on whether the jokes have aged; almost none of them have a bad word for the cast.

Lovingly ripped off from a film with no plot

Spamalot exists because Eric Idle decided that Monty Python and the Holy Grail, released in 1975, could carry a book musical. The source material made that an odd proposition — Idle has described the task as building a show out of a film that has, in his words, no plot, virtually — and the solution was to keep the sketches, add a quest structure, and invent a leading woman who does not appear in the film at all.

Idle wrote the book and lyrics and shared the music with John Du Prez, his collaborator since Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. Mike Nichols directed. The show had its tryout at the Shubert Theatre in Chicago, first previewing on 21 December 2004 and opening officially on 9 January 2005, then transferred to the Shubert on Broadway, previewing from 14 February and opening on 17 March 2005. Tim Curry played King Arthur; Sara Ramirez, then unknown, played the Lady of the Lake.

It took three Tony Awards from fourteen nominations that June — Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical for Nichols, Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Ramirez — and the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in 2006. The Broadway run closed on 11 January 2009 after 1,575 performances, having played to more than two million people and grossed over $168 million. A West End production followed at the Palace Theatre, previewing from 30 September 2006 and opening on 16 October, with Curry again as Arthur; it led the 2007 Olivier nominations with seven, including Best New Musical, and did not win that category.

The songs, and the one that was already famous

The score works by pastiche. "The Song That Goes Like This" is a power ballad about power ballads; "Find Your Grail" is an inspirational anthem that refuses to specify what is being sought; "The Diva's Lament" has the Lady of the Lake complain, correctly, that she has been offstage far too long. "He Is Not Dead Yet" turns the plague-cart scene into a tap number. "Knights of the Round Table" survives from the film largely intact.

The finale is borrowed from a different Python picture: "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life", written by Idle for the crucifixion scene of Life of Brian in 1979, and now the sing-along that sends houses out whistling. Critics on the current tour have called it one of musical theatre's sharpest spoofs, and it functions as the show's one piece of audience participation — the cast cue the room and the room obliges.

The Lady of the Lake remains the engineering problem at the centre of the piece. Idle's own account of the casting requirement is blunt: the part needs a comedienne who can sing. Every reviewer of the 2026 tour has reached for the same conclusion about who is carrying it.

Revival, then road

The show returned to Broadway in 2023 under Josh Rhodes, who both directed and choreographed. It previewed at the St James Theatre from 31 October 2023, opened on 16 November, and closed on 7 April 2024, with James Monroe Iglehart as Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as the Lady of the Lake and Michael Urie as Sir Robin. The reception was lukewarm.

Idle had wanted a film version instead. A screen adaptation had been developed — he has said the choreographer Casey Nicholaw worked on it for five years without pay — before the other Pythons blocked it, a decision Idle called a pity while conceding that it pushed the material back to the theatre, where he prefers it. In October 2024 he published The Spamalot Diaries, a memoir assembled from a journal he had kept during the original production and then forgotten, including the rows with Nichols.

The tour was announced on 24 April 2025, with Rhodes's revival staging taken on the road and more than thirty cities booked for the first year. Paul Tate dePoo III designed sets and projections, Jen Caprio the costumes, Cory Pattak the lighting, Kai Harada and Haley Parcher the sound, Tom Watson the wigs; John Bell supervised the music. It opened at the Connor Palace in Cleveland on 1 December 2025.

Where it stands in autumn 2026

The routing has been relentless. Segerstrom Hall in Costa Mesa through 22 February 2026; the Hollywood Pantages from 24 March to 12 April; the CIBC Theatre in Chicago through 31 May; an outdoor week at Kansas City's Starlight Theatre from 4 to 9 August. The autumn leg ran the Hanover Theatre in Worcester from 2 to 4 October and the Boch Center Wang Theatre in Boston from 8 to 11 October, with Norfolk, Des Moines, Memphis, Orlando, Wilmington and a closing stand at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach from 10 to 15 November. Boston seats were listed from $35 to $164.40.

Major Attaway plays King Arthur, Amanda Robles the Lady of the Lake, Blake Segal is Patsy, Sean Bell Sir Robin, Chris Collins-Pisano Sir Lancelot and the French taunter, Leo Roberts Sir Galahad, Ellis C. Dawson III Sir Bedevere, and Steven Telsey doubles the Historian and Prince Herbert. The Kansas City company numbered twenty-two.

Idle, now living mainly in Provence and on a book tour for a memoir about it, has turned up at some stops to say something funny or rude from the stage, as he did at the Pantages. Speaking to the Boston Globe on 2 October 2026 he called the original Broadway run one of the best experiences of his life and said he liked the fact that the show still works after all that time, noting it had now opened twice on Broadway within his lifetime. The year has carried a loss: Tim Curry, the first Arthur, died at his Los Angeles home on 25 August 2026, aged 80.

A divided press, an undivided house

The strongest notices are for the company rather than the production. Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune, reviewing on 27 May 2026, wrote that he remained unconvinced by the revival's approach — still cheesy, still too much clutter — but judged the touring cast far better than the Broadway originals and the direction greatly improved. The Chicago Sun-Times on 26 May found the material familiar and still funny, delivered with aplomb, while flagging that sound mixing obscured articulation and that "I'm All Alone" stretches a single joke too far. BroadwayWorld's Kansas City notice on 5 August gave it five stars and described laughter that often begins before the punchline arrives.

The dissent is consistent too. Stage and Cinema's 20 February review from Costa Mesa called the evening entertaining but questioned whether it still resonates, found some numbers uncomfortable against current global tensions, heard an underpowered orchestra and read the projections as early-2000s aesthetics. Jonas Schwartz, writing for TheaterMania from the Pantages on 30 March, thought the songs jubilant and the staging inventive but the book scenes diminished — the sketches, he wrote, now clop along like a hollow coconut — and judged dePoo's projections underwhelming. Minnesota Monthly took precisely the opposite view of the same designs, calling them the most intelligent and effective use of digital projection in current touring theatre.

Two things recur across almost every review regardless of verdict. One is Robles, whose "Find Your Grail" and "The Diva's Lament" are repeatedly described as showstoppers. The other is sound: in large houses, fast Python patter has been getting lost.

The show, now

The touring show runs two hours and twenty minutes including one interval, and plays as a fast farce rather than a spectacle: Josh Rhodes drives it at pace, with fourth-wall breaks, topical interpolations and sleight-of-hand scene changes standing in for heavy scenery, while Paul Tate dePoo III's projections carry the Middle Ages and pastiche Terry Gilliam's cut-out animations. There is no support act. The shape is the film's, rerouted — the Historian's prologue, the Black Knight, the French taunting, the Knights Who Say Ni — with the invented songs clustered around the Lady of the Lake, who gets "Find Your Grail" late in act one and "The Diva's Lament" in act two. Major Attaway plays Arthur as a straight man inside the chaos; Steven Telsey's Prince Herbert and quick-change doubling has drawn repeated MVP notices; "He Is Not Dead Yet" is staged as a tap number. It ends with the house singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life". Audiences have been warm to the point of pre-empting punchlines; the common complaint in 2026 is acoustic, with dialogue lost to mic levels in the larger halls, and a recurring note that parts of the 2005 book now land as dated.
