Banksy in a Kraków plating works: the museum the artist never sanctioned
Muzeum Banksy has occupied a 19th-century metalware factory on Kraków's Kazimierz since December 2023, showing more than 150 full-size recreations of street pieces the artist has never authorised. It is one node of a private chain that now runs from Paris to Dubai, and it sells tickets every day of the week.
A metalware factory on Kazimierz
Muzeum Banksy opened on 14 December 2023 at ul. Berka Joselewicza 21, on the eastern edge of Kraków's Kazimierz district. The building is the former Marcin Jarry factory of plated, silver and metal goods, whose origins run back to 1886; the exhibition takes over more than a thousand square metres of it across three levels, with the brick, iron and bare industrial surfaces left as the backdrop rather than papered over.
The city's own news service credited the project to the art manager Hazis Vardar, working with an international team of street artists who reworked the interior into a sequence of fabricated urban settings. The stated purpose was to bring audiences up against socially and politically engaged work that is otherwise encountered on walls in other countries, or not at all — the museum's argument being that a great many of the originals have since been painted over, removed or stolen.
Nothing inside is a Banksy. The more than 150 pieces are recreations, made at the scale of the street works, alongside reproductions of studio pieces, animated visual elements and film.
The Vardar model
Vardar is a Brussels-born theatre owner who previously co-owned Paris venues including Le Palace. The first Banksy Museum ran as a temporary show in Paris in June 2021 and became permanent in 2022; sites followed in Brussels, Barcelona, Prague, Kraków, Milan and Dubai, and the New York branch opened on 15 May 2024 at 277 Canal Street with more than 160 recreated works. The counts differ by site — roughly 100 in Paris, more than 130 in Brussels, about 150 in Kraków, about 160 in New York — but the method does not: anonymous local street artists repaint the murals at full size into built environments, with ambient soundscapes.
Vardar has been direct about the reasoning. Around the New York opening he said that most of this transient art could only be viewed on tiny smartphone screens, which is no way to experience the scale or emotion of Banksy's work, and put the case as a question: street art belongs in the raw setting of the streets, but if people cannot see it, is it even art?
That logic is also a business model. The Kraków site is permanent, open seven days a week, and sells timed entry through Polish ticketing platforms on a rolling calendar that currently runs months ahead.
The route, from Bristol to Borodyanka
The exhibition is organised as a walk through the cities where the work appeared rather than as a chronology of an artist. The sequence takes in Bristol, London, Lowestoft, Paris, Calais, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Naples, Venice, Borodyanka, Hostomel, Irpin, Kyiv and Bethlehem — which means the Ukrainian pieces sprayed on bombed buildings sit in the same route as the early English work and the West Bank wall.
Individual recreations are labelled with the work's title, and some carry a longer interpretative note on what the piece was responding to. A visitor account from 18 December 2023, four days after opening, picked out Girl with Balloon with its 'there is always hope' line, 'We're All In The Same Boat', 'No Future' and 'Follow Your Dreams — Cancelled', and described stopping repeatedly at individual works; that account also noted the practical shape of the place, with a shop at the end of the route and no cloakroom.
The mix of media is uneven by design. Some rooms are a wall and a stencil; others use animation and film to carry works that cannot be recreated as paint on brick.
No blessing from Pest Control
Banksy has nothing to do with any of it. Pest Control Office, the artist's authentication body, states that he is not involved or associated with any touring or permanent exhibition, and while personal copying of the work is permitted, commercial use is not. The office restated the position bluntly on 22 October 2025 about an unrelated London show trading on the name: the new Banksy show in London is not a show by Banksy, the artist was not asked about it, has not contributed to it and will not issue refunds if visitors did not like it.
Critics of the museum chain have concentrated on the contradiction between a paid door and work whose original condition was that anyone could see it for nothing. The art lawyer Leila Amineddoleh has argued that moving the pieces behind an admission fee alters the meaning of the work, and street art documentarians have compared the exercise to copying Michelangelo in a pizza parlour. Vardar's answer has been that Banksy is free to sue; no litigation has been documented.
For a visitor deciding what to book, the practical reading is simple enough. This is an exhibition about Banksy made by other painters, not a display of his objects, and it does not pretend to hang originals.
Where it stands now
Kraków remains a permanent fixture rather than a run with an end date. Admission is 60 zł for adults, 45 zł for students, teachers, under-18s and over-65s, 45 zł a head for groups of ten or more and for a family pack of four or more with a maximum of two adults, 40 zł a head for school groups, and free for children under six; an open-dated ticket valid through 2026 costs 70 zł. The museum opens daily from 11am to 7pm with last entry at 6.15pm.
Reception has been steady rather than contested. The Tiqets listing for the Kraków museum carries a 4.8 out of 5 rating across 356 reviews, and Polish visitor write-ups have consistently praised the industrial conversion and the captioning while treating the reproductions as exactly that.
One real limitation is access. The museum is honest that the old factory has a great many stairs and that only about 10 per cent of the space can be reached without assistance, with staff unable to help with mobility. It runs no car park; trams 1, 3, 5, 17, 19, 24 and 69 serve the street.
The show, now
A visit is self-guided and untimed: entry is booked to a slot, the route runs up through three floors of the old factory, and the museum sets no running time beyond a last entry at 6.15pm for a 7pm close. A first-hand account from the opening week put the realistic minimum at an hour, and longer for anyone reading the captions, which give each work's title and sometimes a note on what it was responding to. The sequence is arranged city by city — Bristol, London, Lowestoft, Paris, Calais, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Naples, Venice, then Borodyanka, Hostomel, Irpin and Kyiv, and Bethlehem — so the Ukrainian work sits alongside the early English stencils and the West Bank wall pieces. Recreations are painted at street scale into built settings by street artists rather than displayed as framed objects, with reproductions of studio work, animated visuals and film filling the gaps; named pieces include Girl with Balloon, 'We're All In The Same Boat', 'No Future' and 'Follow Your Dreams — Cancelled'. There are no support acts in the performance sense, though the museum programmes curator-led tours and educational workshops alongside general admission. Reviews run warm — 4.8 out of 5 across 356 ratings on Tiqets, with Polish visitors singling out the industrial conversion and the explanatory text — while the standing caveats are physical rather than curatorial: a great many stairs, only about 10 per cent of the space reachable without assistance, no cloakroom, and a shop at the exit.
