The five years Niels Destadsbader spent not making a record

The Kortrijk-born presenter-turned-singer is one of the biggest draws in Flemish pop, and on 2 October 2026 he broke a near five-year silence with a fifth album built out of a fire, a break-up and a change of broadcaster.

Ketnet, Kampioenen and a late start in music

Niels Destadsbader was born in Kortrijk on 19 August 1988 and studied dramatic arts and speech at the Stedelijk Secundair Kunstinstituut in Ghent and the Peter Benoit Academy in Harelbeke. The performing came before the singing: in 2008 he reached the semi-finals of the talent format Steracteur Sterartiest, and in the same year took a role in the children's series Amika, which ran until 2011.

From 2009 to 2014 he worked as a wrapper on Ketnet, the Flemish youth channel, the job that made his face familiar to a generation of viewers before anyone bought a record of his. Acting work ran alongside it — De Elfenheuvel between 2011 and 2013, and recurring appearances in the F.C. De Kampioenen films and television episodes — and he presented entertainment formats including Dansdate, K3 zoekt K3 and De Wensboom.

The result was an unusual career shape for a pop singer in Flanders: a decade of broadcast visibility first, and the music built on top of an audience that already existed.

Four albums, and the covers show that changed everything

The debut album Speeltijd arrived on 21 October 2016 and went double platinum. The commercial step change came two years later with the covers show Liefde voor Muziek in 2018, where his reading of Verover mij became his biggest single to that point and was certified gold. Five songs from his work on that series reached the Flemish Top 50.

Dertig followed in 2018, also double platinum, and Boven de wolken in 2019 went platinum. Mee naar boven, from 2019, and Nooit alleen, from 2020, both went gold. His first number one came in the spring of 2021 with De wereld draait voor jou, a collaboration with the producer Regi, and the album Sterker arrived the same year.

The awards tracked the sales. He took five MIAs in 2019 and has won the Radio 2 Zomerhit, the Flemish summer-hit prize, four times. In 2019 the municipality of Deerlijk made him an honorary citizen and he was named a West Flanders ambassador.

The arena run that kept moving

By 2020 he was scaled for arenas. Five nights at Antwerp's Sportpaleis, a room of roughly 18,000, were on the books before the pandemic pushed them into 2021. In their place came Het dak eraf!, a stripped-back series at the Ghelamco Arena, the home ground of AA Gent: four dates on 14, 15, 21 and 22 November 2020, capped at 1,200 people a night, staged under the covered section of the stadium and played towards a single stand so the crowd stayed dry. The first two sold out as soon as they were announced. Speaking at the time, he said he was simply glad to be back on a stage and that people had not forgotten him.

On 23 October 2020 the November dates were pushed back again, first to the Easter period and then to the following summer. The run finally happened in July 2021, by which point it had grown to twelve sold-out nights, opening on 8 July with the singer Nanou joining him for Je bent me.

What happened in the gap

Then the records stopped for almost five years. In March 2024 a fire destroyed his loft in Deerlijk. He also moved his television work from the commercial broadcaster VTM to the public broadcaster VRT, a switch he has said drew press coverage that was not always kind and that got under his skin. In 2025 he joined the cast of the long-running VRT soap Thuis.

The larger change was private. His relationship with Nele Christians, after seven years together, ended shortly after the couple had bought building land — a split he has since said was partly down to how far he had tilted towards work and towards himself. Christians later had a daughter with a new partner; Destadsbader is the child's godfather, and in an interview published by VRT NWS on 12 September 2026 he described the shift from being in love to a friendship built on respect, with Christians saying she had never let him go.

He has said the five years gave him a great deal to write about, and that writing the songs was how he made sense of what had happened.

Zo kan het dus ook

The fifth album, Zo kan het dus ook, was released on Friday 2 October 2026, his first in close to five years. It is presented as the most personal record he has made, with each track tied to a specific episode: the end of the relationship, the fire, the criticism, and the business of starting again when things turn out differently from the plan.

Two singles set it up. Vuur en Vlam, announced on 29 May 2026, was co-written with the Dutch producer Léon Paul Palmen and reads the turbulent stretch back through humour rather than grievance. Onderweg followed on 11 September 2026, written about Christians and about what survives a break-up. A third track discussed in the September interview, Hoogtevrees, deals with the fear of repeating the same mistakes.

Back on stage, deliberately smaller

The live return has been staged in reverse of the usual escalation. On 4 July 2026 he played the open-air OLT Rivierenhof in Deurne for the first time, supported by Bas Serra, a 17-year-old singer-songwriter from Tienen who won The Voice van Vlaanderen earlier in 2026 and plays melancholy piano ballads.

Two album-presentation nights frame the release itself: Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen on Saturday 3 October 2026 and Capitole Gent on Saturday 24 October 2026, both with doors at 19:00 and an 20:00 start, each pairing the new songs with the back catalogue. His own agenda lists the Ghent night as sold out.

The substantial run is the theatre tour Niels Destadsbader komt thuis, which opens on 6 January 2027 at CC De Kluize in Oosterzele and closes on 30 April 2027 at CC De Plomblom in Ninove, taking in more than thirty cultural centres across Flanders. The stated logic is a reversal of roles: having played only large rooms for several years, and knowing audiences travelled across the region to reach them, he is taking the show to the towns instead. Demand has already forced second nights in Waregem, Kapellen, Maldegem, Izegem, Erpe-Mere and Genk, with Oosterzele, De Pinte, Maldegem, Halle, Izegem and Genk sold out at the time of writing. The Kortrijk Schouwburg date, on 15 April 2027, is effectively a home show.

The show, now

The current show exists in two sizes. The album-presentation nights at Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen on 3 October 2026 and Capitole Gent on 24 October 2026 are seated theatre shows with doors at 19:00 and music from 20:00, built as a straight split between the new Zo kan het dus ook material and the hits — Verover mij, De wereld draait voor jou, Speeltijd, Mee naar boven. From 6 January 2027 the format shrinks further for the Niels Destadsbader komt thuis tour, thirty-plus cultural centres across Flanders through to 30 April 2027, performed with acoustic musicians rather than the arena band and pitched as more personal than anything he has toured before, with the songs introduced by the stories behind them. The outdoor exception was OLT Rivierenhof in Deurne on 4 July 2026, his first appearance at that open-air theatre, opened by Bas Serra, the 17-year-old Tienen singer-songwriter who won The Voice van Vlaanderen in 2026 with sparse piano ballads. No published reviews of the 2026 shows had appeared at the time of writing, so the only hard signal on how the new run is landing is ticketing: the Ghent presentation and the Oosterzele, De Pinte, Maldegem, Halle, Izegem and Genk theatre dates had already sold out, with second nights added in six towns.
