Blake Lynch swapped surgical ICU shifts for theatre stages and has since sold more than 200,000 tickets worldwide; his "But Did You Die?" tour runs past 100 dates across the United States and Canada through November 2026.

Orlando, a nursing degree and a coping mechanism

Blake Lynch took his nursing degree at the University of Central Florida in 2014 and went to work in Level 1 trauma centres, eventually in surgical intensive care. Nothing about that path suggested a touring act. The videos that became the Nurse Blake persona started as a way of handling the stress of the job — short clips about charting, handovers and the small indignities of bedside work, posted mainly to Facebook, which found an audience of nurses who recognised every detail.

He was already an organiser before he was a performer. He founded Banned4Life, a campaign that pushed against the United States Food and Drug Administration's lifetime ban on blood donation by gay men and contributed to its end. The advocacy and the comedy have never been separate strands: the same specificity that makes a joke about a call light work is what makes the campaigning credible to the profession he came out of.

His own account of the material is blunt about where the darker parts come from. Speaking before a 2024 run, he described the show as drawing on "probably the most shocking moments from my life growing up as a gay kid in Orlando, Florida".

PTO, Shock Advised and the scale that followed

The touring business grew by overshoot rather than by plan. The PTO Comedy Tour in 2022 was announced as 14 cities and expanded to 55 once demand showed up. Shock Advised followed from 2023 and turned into a roughly 150-city international run; by the autumn of 2024 the count being quoted around the tour was 170 cities, with a 45-date American leg opening on 28 September and running to early December.

Everything that is not the stand-up

The stage act sits inside a larger operation. NurseCon at Sea is a conference held on a cruise ship, gathering upwards of 3,000 nurses for continuing education delivered with drag performers on the bill; it has taken the Best Nurse Event award in consecutive years. Camp NurseCon, the land-based counterpart, came directly out of the 30 days he spent in rehabilitation, and is built around burnout, rest and mental health rather than clinical credit hours.

He has also written two children's books, "I Want To Be A Nurse When I Grow Up" and "Santa Sent to the E.R." The online audience that underwrites all of it runs to roughly 4.83 million followers across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook, and more than 300 million video views, skewing heavily female and concentrated in the 25-44 bracket.

Recognition inside the profession has been steady. He is a four-time winner at Nurse.org's Best of Nursing Awards, taking Comedic Nurse Creator of the Year and Nursing Advocate of the Year in 2026.

Where things stand in 2026

"But Did You Die?" launched in 2025 and has not stopped since. That first year took in a two-night Las Vegas stand on 30 and 31 January, an Australian run from 16 to 26 February across Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, and an autumn North American stretch that included Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary.

In April 2026 the tour was expanded again, with more than 35 additional North American cities announced and the total pushed beyond 100 shows across the United States and Canada. Tickets for the new dates went on sale on 17 April 2026 at 10am. The autumn leg opens on 4 October 2026 at The Colonial in Keene, New Hampshire, and closes on 24 November 2026 at Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia, taking in Nashville, Charlotte, Fargo and Winnipeg along the way. The rooms are mid-sized performing arts theatres rather than arenas: Loeb Playhouse at Purdue University on 18 November 2026, the Five Flags Theater in Dubuque on 10 November, the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown on 12 October. Booking already extends well past the current leg — the official tour listing carries 5 March 2027 at the Chevalier Theatre in Medford, Massachusetts, and 6 March 2027 at The Wilbur in Boston. Storytelling, not one-liners

The act is not built from set-ups and punchlines. He works in stories, with a lot of room left for crowd work and improvisation, and warns audiences in advance about the bluntness of the delivery: "It's storytelling... it's going to be like inserting a Foley catheter with no lube." The writing is deliberately layered for a split room — as he puts it, "there are jokes that patients will get and jokes that nurses get" — which is how a show pitched squarely at healthcare workers still plays to the friends and partners they drag along.

The current material works the other side of the bed rail from the earlier tours. Rather than the clinician's grievances, "But Did You Die?" is about patients and their relatives: self-diagnosing stage 8 cancer off WebMD, hammering the call light as though it were a game-show buzzer, the negotiations that happen in a family waiting room. His own framing of who the night is for is characteristically broad — "grab your coworkers, your friends, your spouse, your mom, your wild grandma" — and he calls it the ultimate nurse night out.

Recovery has become part of the context around the work without being sold as the subject of it. He attended trauma therapy at the Beachway Therapy Center in June 2024 and was close to four months sober by that October's Tahoe dates; the rehabilitation stay that followed shaped Camp NurseCon more directly than it shaped the set list.

The show, now

A "But Did You Die?" date in 2026 is a single headline set in a mid-sized performing arts theatre, typically a 7pm start with doors an hour earlier, as at the Five Flags Theater in Dubuque on 10 November.
