Picked Fifth, Shooting Better: Ohio Basketball Starts Again in Athens

A Mid-American Conference programme with two of the best March upsets of the past twenty years, Ohio opened 2026-27 on 2 November with a win at South Alabama — its first season-opening victory in four years, and the first evidence that last winter's losing record was a blip rather than a slide.

Athens, from 1907

Ohio University has fielded a basketball team since 1907, when it began with a 46-9 win over the Parkersburg YMCA — a scoreline that says more about the rules of the day than the quality of the opposition. The Bobcats joined the Mid-American Conference in 1946 and have stayed there ever since, which makes them one of the longest-tenured members of a league built around north-western Ohio, Michigan and, more recently, the north-east.

The all-time ledger stands at 1,646 wins and 1,229 defeats, a winning percentage of.573 across more than a century. Jim Snyder, who coached from 1949 to 1974, remains the programme's winningest man with 355 victories, a quarter-century run that covers the deepest tournament seasons in Ohio's history.

Three players have passed 2,000 career points in Athens: Dave Jamerson with 2,336, Paul Graham with 2,170 and Gary Trent with 2,108. None of them played in the past three decades, which is part of the modern problem — a MAC school now assembles rosters a year or two at a time and almost never keeps a scorer long enough to build a total like that.

The seasons that still get cited

Ohio has reached the NCAA tournament fourteen times and won eight games there against fifteen defeats. The furthest the programme has gone was 1964, when it reached the regional final and lost to Michigan. It took back to the last sixteen in 1960 and then not again for forty-eight years.

The 2011-12 team ended that wait. Under John Groce, in his fourth season, Ohio finished 29-8 overall and 11-5 in the MAC, took a 13 seed, and beat fourth-seeded Michigan 65-60 and twelfth-seeded South Florida 62-56 before losing 73-65 in overtime to top-seeded North Carolina. D.J. Cooper averaged 14.7 points and 5.7 assists that year; Walter Offutt averaged 12.4 and made the Midwest Regional all-tournament team.

The other result that travels is 20 March 2021, when Ohio — again a 13 seed — beat fourth-seeded Virginia 62-58 in the first round. Virginia were the defending champions from 2019, had missed the ACC tournament after a positive test and the quarantining that followed, and held their first practice back the morning before tip-off. Ohio trailed 38-31, then held Virginia scoreless for more than ten minutes during a 16-2 run, and finished 13 of 14 from the free-throw line. Ben Vander Plas scored 17, Ben Roderick 15, and Jason Preston had 11 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. That 2021 side also won the MAC tournament — one of seven such titles, alongside 1983, 1985, 1994, 2005, 2010 and 2012, with ten regular-season championships on top.

Boals, and the bill for a bad winter

Jeff Boals was hired on 17 March 2019, an Ohio graduate from the class of 1995 returning to the arena he used to sit in. He arrived from Stony Brook, where he had gone 55-41 across three seasons and 31-17 in America East play, after years as an assistant under Thad Matta at Ohio State. The initial deal was five years at $581,100 annually. He is now in his eighth season and has won 130 games at Ohio, at roughly.581 overall and.589 in conference play.

Last winter broke that pattern. The 2025-26 Bobcats were picked to win the MAC in the preseason and instead opened 1-6, finished 15-17 overall and 9-9 in the league, and were tied for fifth. They beat Illinois State, Maine, Marshall and St Bonaventure, but lost to Louisville and to Miami (OH). Seeded sixth in the MAC tournament, they lost the quarter-final to Kent State 86-75. It was the first losing season of Boals's tenure and Ohio's first since 2018-19, the year before he took the job.

The individual numbers were not the issue. Jackson Paveletzke scored 536 points at 17.3 a game with 163 assists; Javan Simmons averaged 15.1; Aidan Hadaway averaged 14.4 points and 7.4 rebounds. The shooting around them was.

A roster rebuilt, and a poll that noticed

Seven players left after last season — Hadaway, Dior Conners, Ajay Sheldon and Jalen Breath out of eligibility, others into the transfer portal. Paveletzke stayed for a fifth year, as did Simmons, with Kiir Kuany, Jesse Burris, Carter Reese and Zay Mosley also back. Three transfers came in: guard Kolton Mitchell from Idaho, guard Kyler D'Augustino from IU Indy and centre Moek Icke from Rhode Island. Six recruited freshmen joined them, drawn from Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Bosnia-Herzegovina — a roster assembled across four countries and three American programmes.

The MAC's preseason poll put Ohio fifth, with no first-place votes and none to win the conference tournament. Paveletzke was named second-team preseason All-MAC. For a programme that had been the favourite twelve months earlier, that is a clear reading of what the league thought of the churn.

The first answer came on 2 November 2026 in Mobile, Alabama, in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. Ohio won 86-77. Mitchell scored 21 with a career-high seven three-pointers from fifteen attempts; Paveletzke added 20, including the free throws that closed it. Ohio out-rebounded South Alabama 36-27 and had 21 assists to thirteen. The Bobcats led 13-4 early, were pulled back to 35-34 by half-time, then used the perimeter shooting against a zone to open a nine-point lead and held it. Graduate guard Siebe Ledegen contributed in the half-court sets. It was Ohio's first opening-night win in four attempts.

Inside the Convo

Home is the Convocation Center, which opened on 3 December 1968 with an 80-70 win over Indiana and cost $8.2m to build — roughly $75.9m in today's money. It seats about 13,000, though the record crowd of 14,102 came on 28 February 1970 for a 77-76 win over Bowling Green. Led Zeppelin played there on 17 May 1969. Renovations in 1997 improved the lighting, press row and camera deck; after the 2004 season the floor was replaced and two Daktronics boards installed. The current centre-hung display runs 11ft by 21ft on the sides and 9ft by 14ft on the ends.

The student section, the O-Zone, dates to the 2001-02 season and sits in the lower bowl along the west side of the court — among the better seats in the building, and free for students. The Ohio University Marching 110 plays men's games.

Ohio returned to the Convo on Saturday 7 November at 1pm against North Carolina A&T, the home opener of the new season.

The show, now

A game at the Convocation Center runs two 20-minute halves and takes roughly two hours end to end, with the Ohio University Marching 110 supplying the pre-game and interval music rather than any support act. The O-Zone student section occupies the lower bowl along the west side, free to students, with a centre-hung videoboard — 11ft by 21ft on the long sides, 9ft by 14ft on the ends — carrying the replays. Stadium Journey scored the building 4.43 out of 5 and gave the atmosphere full marks, comparing a busy night to an NBA game and noting it climbs again when a MAC rival such as Miami (OH) visits; fan engagement scored lowest, at 3 out of 5, because attendance thins when the team is losing, which it did for stretches of last winter. Tickets run $10-$20 online and $15-$25 on the door, with concessions supplemented by pop-ups from Athens restaurants. Most students walk; there is on-site parking with overflow at Peden Stadium, tight on big nights. On the floor this season the shape is perimeter-led — the opening win at South Alabama was built on Kolton Mitchell's seven three-pointers against a zone, with Jackson Paveletzke running the half-court and closing from the line. The home opener was Saturday 7 November at 1pm against North Carolina A&T.
