Four seasons in two hours: Olivia Rodrigo takes her third album into the round

Three years after Guts, Olivia Rodrigo returned in June 2026 with a love record that arrived at number one in more than twenty countries, and she is now halfway through an 86-date arena run that ends at the O2 in May 2027.

Murrieta, then the Disney payroll

Olivia Rodrigo was born on 20 February 2003 in Murrieta, California, to a Filipino-American father and a mother of German and Irish descent. She is partially deaf in her left ear, a detail she has spoken about openly rather than quietly managed. Her first credit was the direct-to-video film An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success in 2015, when she was twelve.

The Disney Channel series Bizaardvark followed, running from 2016 to 2019 with Rodrigo as Paige Olvera, and then the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series from 2019 to 2022. That second job mattered more than the first: the format required original songs, and the songs she wrote for it were the ones that got record labels on the phone. She signed with Geffen and Interscope in 2020 and, unusually for a performer who had come up inside a studio system, negotiated ownership of her master recordings as part of the deal.

Two albums, five weeks at number one, three Grammys

"Drivers License" was released in January 2021 and broke Spotify's single-day streaming records for a non-holiday track, entering the Billboard Hot 100 at number one. Sour arrived that May, spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and finished the year as the third most-streamed album globally on Spotify. At the 2022 Grammy Awards she converted seven nominations into three wins, including Best New Artist.

Guts, released on 8 September 2023, was the harder and funnier record, and it did not suffer for following a phenomenon. Its lead single "Vampire" also entered the Hot 100 at number one, and the BBC's end-of-year aggregate named Guts the most critically acclaimed album of 2023. The Guts World Tour ran from February 2024 to July 2025 across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Alongside it she set up Fund 4 Good in October 2023, a philanthropic arm supported by ticket revenue that has directed money towards reproductive healthcare and abortion funds.

The last year of that cycle was spent mostly on festival stages. She headlined Governors Ball on 7 June 2025, brought David Byrne out, then headlined the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury on 29 June 2025 with Robert Smith of The Cure as a guest, and closed out at Lollapalooza Chicago on 1 August 2025 with members of Weezer. She has since called the Glastonbury set one of the happiest and proudest moments of her career.

The album about being in love and being frightened of it

Rodrigo announced her third album on 2 April 2026 with a note that said no matter how hard she tried to write love songs, they came out laced with melancholy. The title — you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love — splits in two, and so does the record: the Girl So in Love half covers the giddy early stretch of a first adult relationship, the You Seem Pretty Sad half covers its slow collapse. She told Dazed in its summer 2026 issue that the album is about discovering what romantic love looks like in real time, and that even in the happiest moments there is a thought at the back of the head asking whether it will last.

Dan Nigro produced again, as he did on Sour and Guts, but the palette is wider: dream pop, new wave, synth-pop and guitar-led indie rock rather than the pop-punk and piano-ballad axis of the first two. The thirteen tracks include "What's Wrong with Me", a duet with Robert Smith and the first guest feature on an original Rodrigo song. Lead single "Drop Dead" came on 17 April 2026 and entered the Hot 100 at number one; "The Cure" followed on 22 May.

The album was released on 12 June 2026 through Geffen and opened at number one on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 album-equivalent units, her third consecutive chart-topper, and at number one in the UK and more than twenty other countries. It holds 87 on Metacritic. The run also produced a statistic that is hers alone: she is the first act whose first three lead singles and first three studio albums have all debuted at the top of the Hot 100 and the Billboard 200 respectively. A chunk of the writing happened in London, where she has spent much of the past few years — she has said she is the best version of herself there, and credits the weather.

Where she stands in October 2026

Rodrigo is 23 and in the middle of the largest tour she has attempted. The Unraveled Tour runs to 86 shows across North America and Europe, opened on 25 September 2026 at the PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut, and finishes on 10 May 2027 at the O2 Arena in London. The routing is deep rather than wide in the big markets: ten nights in Brooklyn, ten in Los Angeles, and multiple nights at most arena stops rather than one-and-done.

Demand has stayed where it was in 2024. Her United Center show in Chicago on 11 October 2026 was, on the day, the most expensive ticket in the United States on the resale market, with a get-in price of $781. Against that, the Silver Star scheme she ran on the Guts tour continues: pairs of tickets at $20, with the proceeds routed to Fund 4 Good. She also put on Daisy Chain Fields on 29 August 2026, an all-female-billed festival raising money for women's organisations.

The European leg begins on 19 March 2027 in Stockholm at the Avicii Arena and moves through Amsterdam, Munich, Nanterre, Milan and Barcelona, with two separate residencies at the O2 — one in April, one closing the tour in May.

The show as a calendar

The Unraveled production is built around the seasons. The stage is an inverted horseshoe buried in thousands of pastel fake flowers, with a crescent video screen behind, two platforms out in the crowd, a B-stage in the pit and a small stage at the back of the arena. Reviewers covering the Chicago dates counted six movements — Spring, Summer, Summer Twilight, Autumn, Winter and a Spring II encore — each with its own costume, lighting state and weather. Roughly 23 songs, about two hours.

Spring opens with "drop dead", Rodrigo waking in the flower field before a confetti burst. Summer takes in "bad idea right?", "ballad of a homeschooled girl" and "vampire". Autumn pulls the new album's bleaker material — "stupid song", "maggots for brains" — alongside "traitor". Winter brings fake snow and a piano, runs "favorite crime" and "drivers license", and ends on "the cure", the moment that has done the rounds online: she walks to the B-stage, rain falls from the rafters and the paper dress she is wearing dissolves on her to reveal a red corseted one underneath. The encore returns to "deja vu" and "all-american bitch".

Wolf Alice opened the first month of North American dates with a set of around 35 to 40 minutes. The Last Dinner Party, Devon Again, Grace Ives and Die Spitz take other stretches, with Grace Ives on the Stockholm nights and Die Spitz on part of the April O2 run.

The verdicts have been close to unanimous. USA Today's Melissa Ruggieri, reviewing the second of two sold-out nights at Capital One Arena in Washington on 4 October 2026, called it an early career high point and possibly the best live show of the year, noting how far her voice travels between snarl and hush and that she plays a good deal of the guitar herself. Consequence's Jonah Krueger, at the United Center on 12 October, described it as everything you could want from an arena concert and emphasised how rock-weighted the band is — a five-piece with three backing singers, violin and cello on some songs. Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield picked out the all-female band and the staging. The common thread is that the theatrical machinery has not been allowed to swallow the playing.

The show, now

A current Unraveled show runs about two hours and roughly 23 songs, staged as a year: Spring, Summer, Summer Twilight, Autumn, Winter and a Spring II encore, each with its own costumes, lighting and weather effects. The set is an inverted-horseshoe stage smothered in pastel fake flowers, with a crescent video screen, two platforms pushed into the crowd, a B-stage in the pit and a small stage at the back of the arena, so Rodrigo spends large parts of the night off the main deck. It opens with "drop dead", she wakes in a flower field, and the night builds through "bad idea right?", "vampire", "traitor" and "drivers license" to the winter section, where fake snow falls and "the cure" is performed under rain from the rafters while the paper dress she is wearing dissolves to reveal a red corseted one — the clip that has travelled furthest from this tour. The encore comes back round to "deja vu" and "all-american bitch". She plays a lot of the guitar herself, backed by a five-piece band and three backing singers with violin and cello on some songs. Wolf Alice opened the first month of North American dates with 35 to 40 minutes; The Last Dinner Party, Devon Again, Grace Ives and Die Spitz cover other legs, with Grace Ives in Stockholm in March 2027 and Die Spitz on part of the April O2 run. Reviews have been strong — USA Today called the 4 October 2026 Washington show an early career zenith and possibly the best live show of the year, and Consequence's report from the United Center on 12 October described it as everything you could want from an arena concert, with the production never crowding out the band. Resale demand is high (a get-in price of $781 for Chicago on 11 October), but $20 Silver Star ticket pairs continue from the Guts tour, with proceeds going to her Fund 4 Good.
