Eight Rappers and Singers Betting the Lot: ONE OR EIGHT's 47-Prefecture Autumn
The Avex-backed eight-piece who debuted in English before they had a Japanese hit have spent 2026 turning a first world tour into a first EP. With a Black Clover theme on air and a tour of every prefecture in Japan under way, they are now a touring act first and a studio act second.
Ichi ka bachi ka
The group's name is a translation of the Japanese idiom ichi ka bachi ka — one or eight, all or nothing — and it was chosen before any of the eight members had performed a note in public. The line they repeat in interviews and on merchandise, "bet on yourself", is the same thought in English.
The eight came out of WARPs DIG, a battle-format audition run by Avex between 2022 and 2023 that drew its contestants from the company's WARPs ROOTS trainee pool and reached its final on 25 April 2023. Avex unveiled the resulting line-up in April 2024, drip-feeding the members through social media over the following months: MIZUKI, NEO, REIA, RYOTA, SOUMA, TAKERU, TSUBASA and YUGA. Four are positioned as rappers, four as vocalists, and all eight dance.
The debut arrived on 16 August 2024 with the digital single "Don't Tell Nobody", written and produced by Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic with David Stewart, who had co-written BTS's "Dynamite". The lyric was entirely in English. That was the bet in plain sight: Avex had already built the global girl group XG through a separate subsidiary, and ONE OR EIGHT were sent out on the same assumption — that a Japanese act could start abroad and work backwards into its home market rather than the other way round.
The records, in order
The catalogue is still short, which makes each release easy to trace. After "Don't Tell Nobody" came a run of singles through 2025 — among them "Young & Reckless", "Power" and "Bet Your Life" — all of which survive in the live set. The group's first substantial body of work was the mini-album GATHER, released early in 2026 and led by "TOKYO DRIFT", a car-culture track that remains the song non-fans know. The group's own tour announcements put its video above 300 million views and credit it with chart entries unusual for a Japanese boy group at that stage of a career. Collaborators by then included Tedder and Big Sean, and the act took the Upcoming Dance & Vocal Group prize at MTV's VMAJ in 2025.
The first EP, EN-GÏNE, followed on 16 September 2026: six tracks — "V8", "YANKEE SQUAT", "I<3 IT", "MONSTER", "INVINCIBLE" and "TRANSLATE". MIZUKI has explained the title as a sequence rather than a metaphor: gathering together through GATHER, then starting the engine. "TRANSLATE", the lead track and the heaviest rap cut they have released, came with a video in which the members fight yokai. "INVINCIBLE" is the record's quiet track and the first indication on tape that the group can hold a stage without choreography.
"YANKEE SQUAT" leans on Japanese street culture, and TSUBASA has described the reading they wanted: their interpretation of "yankee" is about making your own place in the world rather than waiting for someone to hand one over. The song was given its first airing not in Japan but at the Head in the Clouds festival in Los Angeles on 8 August 2026.
Two documentary strands run alongside the music — ICHIBACHI! on Hulu Japan and ICHIKABACHIA! on YouTube — which is how most of the group's non-musical output reaches fans.
The first tour, and what it proved
Until 2026 the group had toured only as a fan-meeting act. The 1st LIVE TOUR -GATHER- changed that: thirteen stops across North America, South America and Japan through spring and early summer. The Japanese leg opened in Hyogo on 7 March 2026, played Aichi on 14 March and Yokohama Bay Hall on 20 March, which sold out. The American leg ended at Racket NYC in Manhattan in early May, and the whole run closed with Japanese finals in Osaka and Tokyo, the last at Zepp Haneda on 16 July 2026.
The rooms were small by the standards of Avex's bigger acts — club and hall capacities rather than arenas — and that scale is part of why the reviews read the way they do. The eight selected and sequenced the material themselves, and NEO's assessment of the difference was blunt enough to be useful: the group felt it was more theirs this time, and that they had improved as performers.
Reviewing the New York finale, BroadwayWorld's Stephi Wild wrote that the members are dancers and performers first, singled out the breakdancing interlude as the show's set piece, and judged that the group had grown noticeably since its previous visit to the city and had "found their sound". The crowd of 1DERZ — the official fan name — worked through synchronised hand movements for most of the set.
Where they stand in October 2026
The current period is the busiest of the group's career and almost all of it is live work. Between 2 and 11 August 2026 they played Osaka Gigantic Music Festival, Mezamashi Wangan Fes in Tokyo, Head in the Clouds in Los Angeles and FuelFest Japan at Fuji Speedway. They appeared at a-nation on 3 October, with The Performance Zero on 12 October and atmoscon in Tokyo on 1 November also booked.
On 3 October 2026 the second season of the anime Black Clover began airing with ONE OR EIGHT's "Yellow Brick Road" as its ending theme — the first time the group has been attached to a major anime property, and a route into a Japanese audience that "TOKYO DRIFT" reached only partially. A release event for the song is set for Smark Isesaki in Gunma on 10 October, and the group is issuing a music-and-movie card series tied to all 47 prefectures.
The prefecture count is not decoration. ONE OR EIGHT SHŪKAI 2026-2027 in JAPAN -2GATHER- is a fan-meeting tour of every prefecture in Japan, beginning in late October 2026 and running into 2027, with venue-side bonus events confirmed on 3 October. Fanclub presale ran first; general advance sales opened on 1 October 2026. Immediately before it, the Special SHOW CASE 2026 in ASIA -V8- takes in Victoria Theatre in Singapore on 21 October, Samsung Hall at SM Aura Premier in Manila on 23 October and Lido Hall 2 at Lido Connect in Bangkok on 25 October, with tickets on sale since 31 August via Ticketmaster and SOZOLIVE and prices from SGD 88, PHP 2,500 and THB 1,500 respectively.
The pattern is consistent: debut in English, build the following abroad through festivals and showcases, then spend the autumn grinding through Japan one prefecture at a time rather than waiting for an arena to be justified.
The show, now
A ONE OR EIGHT headline show currently runs past 90 minutes and is built as a dance show with singing in it rather than the reverse. The 2026 GATHER tour opened every night with "TOKYO DRIFT" and moved straight into "Young & Reckless", "Power" and "Bet Your Life" before splitting the eight into solo spots — the rappers MIZUKI, SOUMA, NEO and RYOTA in one block, the vocalists YUGA, REIA, TSUBASA and TAKERU in another — then regrouping for "365", "Don't Tell Nobody", "Kawasaki" and "DSTM", including live-only arrangements. A choreography interlude with flips and breakdancing carries the middle of the set; the New York finale at Racket NYC in early May 2026 ended on multiple encores including the then-unreleased "Live Laugh Loud". Staging is plain by design — club and hall rooms, no large set pieces, no announced support act on the GATHER dates — and the members sequenced the set themselves. BroadwayWorld's review of that finale called them dancers and performers first and said they had found their sound; fans, who go by 1DERZ, run synchronised hand movements through most of the night, and the loudest reaction of the New York show came during RYOTA's solo. The autumn 2026 bookings are different in format: the Asia showcases in Singapore, Manila and Bangkok (21–25 October) are shorter showcase sets with soundcheck and photo-session packages attached, while the 47-prefecture SHŪKAI -2GATHER- run from late October is a fan-meeting tour with venue bonus events rather than a full concert.
