Paul Smith: the Hot Water compere who turned a thousand club clips into a 112-date world tour

Paul Smith spent a decade as the resident compere of one Liverpool comedy club before arenas caught up with him. Three months into the Happy world tour and six months after his first filmed special reached cinemas, he is among the busiest stand-ups working out of Britain.

Lime Street first, everywhere else later

Smith came up on the Liverpool circuit in the mid-2000s. He won the city's new comedian of the year award in 2006, reached a semi-final of So You Think You're Funny and a final of the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year, and did a spell of early television involving comics from different generations that he later described as deeply unsatisfying. The response was to do the opposite of what the circuit expects: he cut back on touring and rooted himself in his own city.

Speaking to The Skinny in September 2015, ten years into performing, he was the regular compere at Hot Water Comedy Club — then running Friday to Sunday out of the Holiday Inn on Lime Street — and had only recently started staging solo shows there. He named his first of those as the best gig he had played, on the grounds that he had expected nobody to come and it sold out. Until that night he had never performed for a room that had turned up specifically for him.

The compere's job shaped everything that followed. A compere works the room rather than a script: names, jobs, rows, who came with whom. Smith did it several nights a week for years, which is why the material that now fills arenas is largely generated in front of the people paying for it.

A thousand clips and no television

The club filmed him, and the footage did the work that a TV panel show normally does. By June 2019, when he appeared on episode 297 of the Comedian's Comedian podcast, more than 1,000 short clips of his Hot Water crowd work had been uploaded — a volume the host described as probably the largest body of online comedy content held by any stand-up. On that episode Smith discussed the moment he nearly lost control of an 8,000-strong hometown arena show, and set out why he neither wants nor needs television exposure.

The grassroots following in Liverpool carried him into the Echo Arena on his 2018 tour, well before the national trade press was paying attention. The touring shows arrived at a steady clip either side of it: Hiya Mate in 2017, Following in 2018, Changed in 2019, Joker in 2021. None of them came with a broadcast credit attached.

He is also still, between arena legs, a working compere and headliner at the club that made him — the Happy run includes nights at Hot Water and at Liverpool's Blackstock Market through the summer and autumn of 2026, where new material gets its first airing in a room of a few hundred.

Pablo: the tour that made the scale obvious

Pablo, the 2024/25 show, is where the arithmetic changed. It ran through arenas in the UK, Ireland and Europe, and in January 2025 made his debut in Australia and New Zealand, including the ICC Theatre in Sydney on 24 January. Reviewing that night, Time ∴ Tide described front-row roasts delivered quickly but warmly enough that the audience read as collaborators rather than targets, on what the writer called an exceptionally large stage.

When the next tour was announced in February 2026, the promoters put Pablo's global attendance at more than 650,000 and called him one of the fastest-selling stand-ups in the world. That is promoter framing, but the shape of it is visible in the venue list: multi-night arena runs rather than single dates.

Birmingham Live's Laura Haynes reviewed the Utilita Arena Birmingham show in a piece published on 12 April 2025 and set out the mechanics plainly. Danny McLoughlin opened; the main set ran about an hour and a half across two halves; Smith came back after the interval to dimmed lights and loud music. The crowd work took in the front rows, the written material covered family and life on tour, and the delivery leaned on physical acting and impersonations. Her summary was that nothing was off-limits, and her practical advice was to avoid the front row.

Pablo Live, and a route to the screen that avoids broadcasters

Smith's first filmed special arrived without a streaming platform commissioning it. Paul Smith: Pablo Live was shot at a sold-out performance at the 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin, runs around 85 minutes, and was announced on 3 March 2026 for a cinema release through CinemaLive. It opened in more than 350 cinemas on Friday 17 April 2026, with tickets going on sale on 4 March. It has since surfaced on digital rental and purchase stores, including the Prime Video Store and Apple TV.

For a comic whose entire profile was built on free clips, the cinema-first route is consistent: the distribution is paid for by the people already buying tickets, and no commissioner gets a say in the edit.

Where he stands in October 2026

Happy was announced on 23 February 2026, with a pre-sale on 25 February and general sale on 27 February. It opened in Crewe on 1 July 2026 and the official listing currently carries 112 dates running to 27 November 2027, when it closes with two nights at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. The announced territories are the UK, Ireland, Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East, with further dates in the USA, Canada, Europe and the Middle East still to be confirmed.

The autumn 2026 run is dense: Dublin's 3Arena on 7 and 8 October, Hot Water Comedy Club in Liverpool on 9 and 15 October, Sheffield's Utilita Arena on 16 and 17 October, Manchester's AO Arena on 21 and 22 October, Derby on 29 and 30 October, then Brighton Centre on 25 November and two nights at the OVO Arena Wembley on 26 and 27 November. Southampton Guildhall on 19 November is already a waiting list. The 2027 leg picks up with Belfast on 8 and 9 January, Cardiff on 15 and 16 January and Glasgow's OVO Hydro on 5 and 6 March.

Smith describes Happy as a show about finding joy in the chaos and laughter in the everyday; the promoters call it the biggest and boldest of his career. The more telling detail is that a comic with no television vehicle is selling consecutive nights in 11,000-capacity rooms on both sides of the equator, and still putting the new hour through a club on Lime Street first.

The show, now

Happy is listed by the tour's own box office at 135 minutes, which on arena dates means a support slot, an interval and a main set of roughly 90 minutes — the structure Birmingham Live recorded on the Pablo arena run in April 2025, with Danny McLoughlin opening and Smith returning for the second half to dimmed lights and loud music. The format is front-loaded with crowd work: names, jobs and seat numbers out of the front rows, extended at length when a subject proves fruitful, then set-piece stories from his own life — marriage, children, health kicks, embarrassments on tour — acted out physically and with impersonations rather than narrated. The staging is minimal, a large bare stage and screens, because the room is the set. Reviewers have been consistent on two points: the material is explicit and, as Birmingham Live put it, nothing is off-limits; and the roasting lands warmly rather than cruelly, which the Sydney review of the January 2025 ICC Theatre show attributed to Smith reading a crowd fast enough to make every interaction feel unrepeatable. The standard advice from both reviewers and fans is to avoid the front row unless being part of the act is the point. Arena dates open doors at 6pm; under-14s must be accompanied, and 16-plus is advised at parental discretion. Between arena legs Smith plays Hot Water Comedy Club and Blackstock Market in Liverpool, where the Happy material is worked up in a far smaller room.
