Twenty-five years on, Pig Destroyer take a basement record back out on the road

Alexandria, Virginia's Pig Destroyer have spent 2026 playing their 2001 album Prowler in the Yard in full, from Maryland Deathfest in May to a four-date British run in November — the first UK shows since 2024 and the first with the current five-piece line-up.

Out of the wreckage of a hardcore band

Pig Destroyer came together in Alexandria, Virginia in 1997, assembled from the pieces of Treblinka, a short-lived political hardcore group that had just fallen apart. Two of its members carried on: vocalist J.R. Hayes, previously of Enemy Soil, and guitarist Scott Hull, who was already playing in Agoraphobic Nosebleed and had served time in Anal Cunt. Drummer John Evans completed the trio but left for school shortly afterwards, and Brian Harvey took the stool.

The name was chosen for bluntness. Hull has said the criteria were that it be insulting while still an improvement on the name of his previous band; pig, in this case, is the police sense of the word. The early set-up was deliberately narrow — no bass player, no live electronics, just guitar, drums and Hayes' voice — and that economy shaped the writing. Hull tracked guitars that did the work of two instruments, and the songs ran a minute or less.

The debut, Explosions in Ward 6, appeared in 1998. It drew attention in the tape-trading and distro networks that grindcore still ran on, and the response was strong enough that the band went straight into writing the follow-up.

The basement record

Prowler in the Yard was recorded between August 2000 and March 2001 in Harvey's basement on an eight-track, and released by Relapse Records on 24 July 2001. Twenty-two tracks, most of them short, built around a narrative of obsession. Hayes has described the subject matter as self-loathing, depression, anxiety, desperation, loneliness and revenge, with a pathological fixation on pornography — a description that has followed the record around for a quarter of a century because nothing on the sleeve softens it.

That sleeve was drawn by the tattoo artist Paul Booth, who took a cue from Pink Floyd's The Wall and produced an image of a man taking himself apart with a hacksaw. The album's standing was built slowly rather than at release: Terrorizer placed it third among American grindcore releases in a 2009 ranking, Decibel inducted it into its Hall of Fame in 2013, and AllMusic settled on four stars out of five. Relapse remixed and remastered it in 2015, with one track, Evacuating Heaven, dropped because the vocal archive for it no longer existed.

The songs that recur in the live sets — Jennifer, Cheerleader Corpses, Trojan Whore, Scatology Homework — all come from this record, and they have done so for most of the band's working life.

Terrifyer to Head Cage

Terrifyer followed in 2004 and marked the point at which the band stopped sounding like a basement. The production is cleaner, the arrangements wider, and the release came with extra DVD material rather than a straightforward single-disc issue. Two more albums arrived at long intervals: Book Burner in 2012 and Head Cage in 2018, six studio records in twenty years, which is a slow rate for a band of this kind and reflects that Hull and Hayes have always treated Pig Destroyer as something done properly rather than often.

Since Head Cage there has been no seventh album. What there has been: The Octagonal Stairway, an EP issued by Relapse in August 2020, and Pornographers of Sound: Live in NYC, a live album released in 2021. The most substantial recent release is archival — a 20th anniversary edition of Terrifyer, with pre-orders opening on 15 November 2024 across a four-LP box, a double LP and CD. It runs to 47 songs: the 21 remastered album tracks, 20 previously unheard demo versions, and six unreleased pieces including Dress in Gasoline, The Cutting Room, Blurface and DoomSpell, plus a cover of the Melvins' Claude.

The line-up as it stands

Hayes and Hull are the constants. Harvey left in 2011 and was replaced by Adam Jarvis, who has drummed on everything since. The band added a bass player for the first time in 2013, John Jarvis, and Travis Stone took over the position in 2019. Blake Harrison handled noise and samples from 2006 until 2022; he died on 10 March 2024 from complications of pneumonia and a heart attack. Alex Cha now fills that role.

So the band touring in 2026 is a five-piece — Hayes, Hull, Adam Jarvis, Stone and Cha — and it is the first configuration to take Prowler in the Yard out in full without Harrison on the samples desk.

The anniversary year, dated

The 25th anniversary of Prowler in the Yard has structured the whole of 2026. The anchor was Maryland Deathfest XXI in Baltimore on Saturday 23 May, where the album was played start to finish. Two warm-up shows were announced on 18 December 2025 with tickets going on sale the following morning: 21 May at Amityville Music Hall on Long Island and 22 May at Crossroads in Garwood, New Jersey, both shared with Deadguy and supported by Sex Prisoner and Mellow Harsher.

A week later, on 30 May, the band played Roadrunner in Boston in a support slot on an Acid Bath bill that also carried Napalm Death and Primitive Man. The European leg took in Wacken Open Air on 31 July, on the Headbangers stage. Back home, two headline nights at The 8x10 in Baltimore on 24 and 25 October were billed simply as Night 1 and Night 2, with different sets, followed by Chicago's Bottom Lounge on 30 October.

The British dates run 12 to 15 November: the Arts Club loft in Liverpool, then Scala in London on the 13th with Wormrot, Digital in Newcastle on the 14th alongside Eyehategod, and Glasgow on the 15th. The Glasgow show is the closing day of Core. — A Celebration of Noise, announced on 26 January 2026 and spread across the Art School, Nice N Sleazy and the Garnethill Multicultural Centre from 13 to 15 November; Pig Destroyer top a Sunday bill that also holds Eyehategod, Wormrot, Raging Speedhorn and Rwake. Scala has a capacity of 1,145, doors at 18:30 and a £30 ticket, and DICE has already marked it sold out. After that: a New Orleans date at the UNO Lakefront Arena on 20 November on a bill with Pantera, the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest in Denver and two nights at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn in the first week of December, and Bloodstock Open Air at Walton-on-Trent in August 2027.

What the sets actually look like

The documented 2026 sets run to roughly twenty songs and still finish inside an hour, because a Pig Destroyer song is frequently shorter than the gap between two of them. In support — Boston on 30 May — the band had a 45-minute slot, from 7.25 to 8.10, and used it for a fast crawl through the catalogue before dropping into the anniversary material.

Headline nights are structured in two halves. The first is drawn from across the records: Gravedancer, Thumbsucker, Phantom Limb, Sis, The American's Head, Crippled Horses, The Diplomat, Loathsome. The second is the Prowler block, with Jennifer, Cheerleader Corpses, Scatology Homework and Trojan Whore in album order. The two Baltimore nights in October proved how much room that leaves: night one opened Gravedancer, Scarlet Hourglass, Thumbsucker, Pretty in Casts and pulled in The Gentleman, while night two opened Sis, The American's Head, Eve, Valley of the Geysers and worked in Thought Crime Spree, Army of Cops and Ghost of a Bullet. Only the Prowler run was common to both.

The show, now

A 2026 Pig Destroyer show is around twenty songs and under an hour, which works out to a set that is mostly song and very little else — the Boston date on 30 May filled a support slot from 7.25 to 8.10pm. Headline nights split in two: a run pulled from across the catalogue (Gravedancer, Thumbsucker, Phantom Limb, Sis, The American's Head, Crippled Horses, The Diplomat, Loathsome), then the 25th anniversary block from Prowler in the Yard in album order, with Jennifer, Cheerleader Corpses, Scatology Homework and Trojan Whore. The full album was played start to finish at Maryland Deathfest XXI in Baltimore on 23 May. The two 8x10 nights in Baltimore on 24 and 25 October were billed as Night 1 and Night 2 and shared only the Prowler section, the rest swapped out for Scarlet Hourglass, Pretty in Casts and The Gentleman on the first night and Eve, Valley of the Geysers, Thought Crime Spree, Army of Cops and Ghost of a Bullet on the second. Staging is minimal and the five-piece now includes Alex Cha on noise and samples, the role Blake Harrison held until 2022. On the British dates the support changes city to city: Wormrot at Scala in London on 13 November (doors 18.30, £30, 1,145 capacity, already sold out on DICE), Eyehategod at Digital in Newcastle on the 14th, and in Glasgow on the 15th the band close the Sunday of Core. — A Celebration of Noise above Eyehategod, Wormrot, Raging Speedhorn and Rwake.
