Rogucki x 30: the Coma frontman spends his anniversary building something new
Piotr Rogucki has spent nearly three decades as the voice of Łódź rock band Coma. He is marking 30 years on stage not with a greatest-hits lap but with a three-year project, a new band deliberately not named after him, and a concert album, Transmutacje, due 16 October 2026.
A coin toss in Łódź, 1998
Rogucki was born on 5 May 1978 in Łódź and trained as an actor at the Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts. His professional work dates from 1998 — the year Coma was founded in the same city, which is where the 30-year count he is marking in 2026 comes from. The group first went out as Voo Doo Art and only became Coma because the members tossed a coin over the name shortly before a radio interview.
The acting never stopped being part of the job. He has worked on stage at TR Warszawa and appeared in Polish film and television, including the wartime series Czas honoru, across roles from 2000 onwards. That grounding in theatre explains a lot about how his shows are now put together: narration, staging and visual design are treated as part of the material rather than decoration bolted on afterwards.
The records that did the work
Coma's debut, Pierwsze wyjście z mroku, arrived in 2004 and took a Fryderyk for rock album of the year. The follow-up, Zaprzepaszczone siły wielkiej armii świętych znaków, went to number one in Poland in 2006 and collected two more Fryderyki; Hipertrofia in 2008 went platinum. Two English-language albums, Excess in 2010 and Don't Set Your Dogs on Me in 2013, were aimed at audiences outside Poland, and the band opened for Linkin Park, Pearl Jam and Tool. They also took a Złoty Bączek statuette at the 13th Woodstock Festival. Three further records — 2005 YU55 in 2016, Metal Ballads vol. 1 in 2017 and Sen o 7 szklankach in 2019 — brought the studio count to nine.
Rogucki's work away from the band is substantial in its own right. Loki – Wizja Dźwięku reached number two in Poland in 2011, the archival 95–2003 topped the chart in 2012, and J.P. Śliwa reached number eight in 2015. With Kuba Karaś he formed the duo Karaś/Rogucki, whose Ostatni bastion romantyzmu was released on 14 February 2020: eleven songs built on cold wave and new romantic sounds of the 1980s. The second duo album, Czułe Kontyngenty, followed on 23 September 2022 with twelve tracks written alongside Wiktoria Jakubowska and Kamil Kryszak — both now part of his touring band.
Five years off, then the arenas
Coma stopped in 2019 and came back in 2024 with the line-up largely intact, playing Rockowizna Festival and Pol'and'Rock. The proper restart came on 28 March 2025 at Atlas Arena in Łódź, under the title RE-START. The band played 26 songs over three hours and fifteen minutes, on a production with a second stage out in the middle of the floor and a platform that descended to link the two, the set broken into levels in the manner of a video game. Krzysztof Zalewski joined for System and Mery Spolsky for Lajki. The Atlas Arena review called the staging world-class and the evening better than its reviewer had expected; Rogucki, from the stage, settled for counting it a success.
Four more arena dates followed in autumn 2025 — Ergo Arena in Gdańsk and Sopot on 17 October, Hala Stulecia in Wrocław on 2 November, Spodek in Katowice on 21 November and Tauron Arena in Kraków on 7 December. The reunion also brought a younger crowd. Rogucki has described asking a Pol'and'Rock audience in 2026 who was seeing Coma for the first time and watching roughly 60 per cent of hands go up, with festival crowds standing and listening rather than drifting off for food between songs.
A band he refuses to name after himself
Rogucki x 30 was announced in June 2026 and runs to 2028. He describes it not as a summary but as a process pointed at the future, taking in new compositions, records, theatre work and audio drama. The vehicle is Normalni Ludzie — Michał Wasilewski on electronics, Wiktoria Jakubowska on drums and flute, Paweł Cieślak on synthesisers, bass and saxophone, and Kamil Kryszak on guitar. He has been explicit about keeping his own surname out of the band name because of who the other four are, calling them outstanding artists in their own right and the group a place to look for a new sound and new ways of communicating.
That stance is of a piece with how he now talks about himself. Speaking to Polskie Radio, he put it as his ego having been quietened and knocked down by years of failure, and said he had opened himself up to people after a long stretch of being closed off. Alongside the band he has set up CZULE, a collective begun with Lena Duła that he frames around respect, support and initiative rather than competition; CZULE is also a co-organiser of Coma's arena show this November.
Transmutacje, out 16 October 2026
The first release under the anniversary banner is Transmutacje, credited to Rogucki & Normalni Ludzie and due on 16 October 2026. It is a concert record — twelve recorded performances from a period the band spent working out what it was — rather than a studio album, and it rebuilds songs from Coma, Karaś/Rogucki and the solo albums in electronic arrangements that run to trance-like repetition and shoegaze textures. The sleeve is a linocut by Patrycja Podkościelny.
Two tracks were out ahead of it. A new version of the Coma song Los cebula i krokodyle łzy appeared on 21 August 2026, stripped to direct instrumentation with electronics underneath, followed by Kilka westchnień. Rogucki has described the record as a staging post on the way to wholly original material written with this line-up, and told Rzeczpospolita he is now ready to mount what he calls total spectacles — shows where video work and spoken narration, handled by Zosia Kozłowska, carry as much of the evening as the songs. His stated aim is something closer to contemporary spirituality than entertainment.
Two very different rooms this autumn
The Transmutacje tour takes in six dates: B90 in Gdańsk on 25 October 2026, Studio in Kraków on 30 October, Wytwórnia in Łódź on 31 October, Hala Stulecia in Wrocław on 6 November, Miasto Ogrodów in Katowice on 29 November and Klub Stodoła in Warsaw on 15 December, where doors open at 18:00 for a 19:30 start. Promoters describe the evenings as a meeting with music and other arts rather than a conventional gig, with Podkościelny's prints and Kozłowska's video installations turning the rooms into something nearer a gallery.
Between those dates sits the larger event. Coma play Atlas Arena in Łódź on 13 November 2026 at 20:00 under the title Armia Zaprzepaszczonych, marking 20 years of Zaprzepaszczone siły wielkiej armii świętych znaków. The band perform that album complete in the first act, then move into new material in the second, across about two and a half hours guided by the Trickster figure from the record's cover. Tickets went on sale at noon on 14 May 2026 and it is billed as the band's only show of that scale in 2026. A new Coma studio album is planned for 2028.
The show, now
Two formats are running in parallel in autumn 2026. With Normalni Ludzie, the Transmutacje shows are club-sized and built as a staged piece: Coma, Karaś/Rogucki and solo songs rebuilt in electronic arrangements, alongside unreleased material, with video installations by Zosia Kozłowska and linocut work by Patrycja Podkościelny filling the room, plus spoken narration between songs. No support acts are named on the tour pages; the Warsaw date at Klub Stodoła on 15 December opens its doors at 18:00 for a 19:30 start, and promoters describe the evening as a meeting with music and other arts rather than a gig. The Coma show is a different proposition — Atlas Arena, Łódź, 13 November at 20:00, roughly two and a half hours in two acts, the whole of the 2006 album Zaprzepaszczone siły wielkiej armii świętych znaków first and new material second, held together by animations and the Trickster character from the album sleeve. The benchmark is the band's RE-START at the same venue on 28 March 2025: 26 songs over three hours fifteen, a second stage in the middle of the floor joined to the main one by a descending platform, guest spots from Krzysztof Zalewski on System and Mery Spolsky on Lajki. The Atlas Arena review rated the production world-class and said the night exceeded expectations; Rogucki's own verdict from the stage was that the evening could be counted a success. Audiences at the smaller Normalni Ludzie shows have mostly commented on the musicianship and the emotional weight rather than the spectacle.
