The particle physicist who sells out arenas: Brian Cox and the Emergence tour

Brian Cox is a Manchester particle physicist who holds the Guinness World Record for the best-selling science tour on earth, and he spent October 2026 taking his new show Emergence round British arenas while collecting the Stephen Hawking Medal for science communication.

Oldham, keyboards, then a doctorate at DESY

Cox was born on 3 March 1968 at the Royal Oldham Hospital, and his first professional career was in music rather than physics. He played keyboards for the rock band Dare, who released Out of the Silence in 1988 and Blood from Stone in 1991, and later worked as a live and session keyboard player for the pop group D:Ream, whose chart success coincided with his return to study.

He took a first-class BSc in physics at the University of Manchester in 1995 and stayed for a PhD in high-energy particle physics, completed in 1998 under Robin Marshall and based on work with the H1 experiment at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg. That is a conventional experimental-physics apprenticeship, and it is the part of the biography that still underwrites the rest: he remains Professor of Particle Physics in Manchester's Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science.

The two careers are less separate than they look. The arena tours that now define his public work are run on rock-tour logistics — screens, lighting rigs, orchestral scores, a crew — applied to cosmology.

The broadcast years

The television run began with Wonders of the Solar System in 2010 and continued with Wonders of the Universe in 2011, Wonders of Life in 2013, Human Universe in 2014, Forces of Nature in 2016 and The Planets in 2019, alongside Stargazing Live, which he fronted from 2011 to 2017 and again in 2019. He has also presented the BBC series Universe. Since November 2009 he has co-presented The Infinite Monkey Cage on BBC Radio 4 with the comedian Robin Ince, a format that pairs working scientists with comedians and has outlasted most of the television.

The books split along the same seam. With the theoretical physicist Jeff Forshaw he has written Why Does E=mc2? (2009), The Quantum Universe (2011), Universal: A Guide to the Cosmos (2016) and Black Holes: The Key to Understanding the Universe (2022); with the producer Andrew Cohen he wrote the companion volumes to the television series, from Wonders of the Solar System in 2010 through Forces of Nature in 2016.

The institutional recognition arrived in parallel: the Institute of Physics Kelvin Medal in 2010, an OBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours, the Royal Society's Michael Faraday Prize in 2012, election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016, a CBE in the 2020 Birthday Honours, and designation as a United Nations Champion for Space in 2025.

Four record-breaking tours

Cox holds the Guinness World Record for the most tickets sold for a science tour, and he has taken the title four times. The figure climbed from 75,193 in 2016 to 158,589 in 2017 and 230,873 in 2022, before Horizons: A 21st Century Space Odyssey sold 369,297 tickets between August 2022 and May 2025.

The fourth certificate was handed over in May 2025 by the Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric at the Town Hall in New York, at the end of the Horizons run. Cox's response was characteristically flat about his own part in it: "It is wonderful that so many people want to spend an evening contemplating our place in the Universe." Guinness World Records' editor-in-chief Craig Glenday put the repeat success down to Cox's ability to make the material travel.

Those numbers explain why a lecture now books the same rooms as a rock act — Co-op Live, the O2, the 3Arena — rather than a university hall or a theatre.

Emergence

Emergence, announced as the follow-up to Horizons, opened in Helsinki on 25 March 2026 and routed through New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and mainland Europe before reaching the UK. The British and Irish leg ran across October and November 2026, taking in Co-op Live in Manchester on 9 October and the 3Arena in Dublin on 14 November, with the North American dates following from late November — the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on 25 November 2026 among them. The run continues into 2027.

The premise is a shift away from pure astronomy. Where Horizons was a space odyssey, Emergence argues that dazzling complexity rests on simple underlying rules, and it moves between galaxies, black holes, ecosystems, snowflakes and the human brain to make the case, taking in how curiosity, mathematics and a feel for symmetry let people decode the laws of nature. Cox's own framing of it was that it is "the most ambitious live show I've ever written", built with "a wonderful group of scientists, musicians, film makers and graphic artists to bring cosmology, biology, philosophy and history to the largest and most advanced LED screens available".

The music is a genuine commission rather than library score. PJ Harvey wrote and recorded a song called Voyager for the tour, named after the two NASA probes launched in 1977 and sung in the voice of Voyager 2; it quotes Carl Sagan, and was recorded at Miraval Studios in Provence earlier in 2026 with a full orchestra, arranged by the composer Dario Marianelli. Harvey described the brief as a challenge to write in the craft's voice. Cox's reason for commissioning it was that "music is one of the ways we've developed to explore the emotional landscape of reality rather than the physical landscape".

Autumn 2026

On 2 October 2026, a fortnight before the UK leg of Emergence got going, Cox was presented with the 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication at a private ceremony at the Royal Astronomical Society in London. The award was handed over by Starmus co-founders Brian May and the astrophysicist Garik Israelian, and Cox noted the circumstance: he had been with Hawking when the medal was announced a decade earlier. His line on why the work still matters was blunt — astronomy is the oldest science, and in a fractured world, trying to understand the universe counts for more than ever. He was also given an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch in 18-carat gold at the ceremony.

Later in October 2026 it was reported that he had signed a long-term deal with Sony Pictures Television's digital studio to make YouTube formats spanning science, astronomy and culture — a move away from relying on commissioned broadcast series, and towards the platform where most of the audience for this material now is.

None of which has displaced the day job in Manchester, or the radio. The pattern of the last fifteen years holds: a university post, a Radio 4 series, books with Forshaw and Cohen, and a touring show that sells more tickets each cycle than the last.

The show, now

Emergence is a single-performer arena show that runs for a little over two hours, with Cox on stage almost throughout and speaking largely unscripted. There is no support act billed; the opening sequence is the show itself. The visual load is carried by a wall of high-resolution LED screens running animations and imagery of black holes, pulsars, quasars, moons and galaxies, with a live stream from the International Space Station among the segments, and the argument moves from Planck-scale physics through biology and the laws of nature out to the multiverse. Music is used sparingly between sequences rather than continuously, including PJ Harvey's commissioned song Voyager, arranged by Dario Marianelli and recorded with a full orchestra. Reviewers of the October 2026 UK dates — the Edinburgh Playhouse on 8 October and Sheffield's Utilita Arena on 15 October — described it as impressing on every level and as an immersive two-hour journey; the Liverpool Echo called it stunning, and the Express and Star came away with a renewed appetite for the basics of science and maths. The Guardian line the tour uses on its own billing calls it a jaw-dropping reminder that human life is both irrelevant and hugely precious. Practically: arena doors tend to open around 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start, under-16s must be accompanied by an adult at the 3Arena in Dublin, Dublin tickets started at €46.90, and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on 25 November 2026 offers a Ford Lounge upgrade with food, an open bar and a commemorative poster.
