Twenty-four years at the Tropicana: Ring of Combat and the trade of making UFC fighters
Lou Neglia's New Jersey and Long Island fight promotion has been feeding the UFC since 2002, and 2026 has given it a new weight class, a fourth-round title rule and a documentary about its founder.
Brooklyn, kickboxing, and a promotion built before the sport was legal
Ring of Combat is the work of one man with a specific résumé. Lou Neglia was a three-time world kickboxing champion before he became a promoter, and the promotion's own history dates the first Ring of Combat card to 12 October 2002 in Uncasville, Connecticut — seven bouts on the bill. Two months later, on 7 December 2002, Neglia put on what the promotion describes as the first sanctioned mixed martial arts event in New Jersey. That second date is the more consequential one: New Jersey's regulatory framework became the template much of American MMA was built on, and Ring of Combat has run inside it ever since.
The documentary released this summer about Neglia frames him as a figure who helped lay the early foundation of the sport before it went mainstream, tracing a line from Brooklyn street fighting to world kickboxing titles to promoting. The promotion's stated operating principle is blunter than any of that: tough fights make great fighters. It has also collected the nickname the American Idol of MMA, on the grounds that its business is finding people nobody has heard of and putting them somewhere they can be seen.
The pipeline is the product
What separates Ring of Combat from the other regional promotions on the eastern seaboard is a graduation rate. The promotion's own accounting, written when it had run rather fewer shows, claimed more than a hundred fighters recruited by the UFC. The website for the Neglia documentary puts the current figure at more than 160 UFC fighters and six world champions developed through Ring of Combat.
The names that carry the claim show up in the film itself, which features interviews with more than forty people including Frankie Edgar, Matt Serra, Chris Weidman, Ray Longo and Al Iaquinta. The gyms that feed the cards are the same ones those careers came out of: recent Ring of Combat bills have carried fighters representing Tiger Schulmann, Longo MMA, Shark Tank MMA, Brooklyn MMA, Animals MMA and Rhino Fight Team.
The economics are regional and are not hidden. Ring of Combat sells three sponsorship tiers at between $5,000 and $20,000 per event, with VIP tickets, logo placement and individual fight sponsorship attached. This is a promotion that runs three or four Atlantic City nights a year, not a television business with a rights deal underneath it.
2026 on the card: a new belt, and a title fight that would not finish
The year's three Atlantic City shows all ran at the Tropicana Showroom. Ring of Combat 89, on 6 March 2026, was the significant one on paper: the promotion introduced a 175lb division and crowned its first champion, with Devan Worth beating Dominic Ducharme by unanimous decision. The rest of the ten-bout card went the way Ring of Combat cards tend to go — Donald Arana won by TKO, and Matthew McAuley, Ryan Sipavicius and Luke Palmieri all finished by rear-naked choke.
Ring of Combat 90, on 12 June 2026, was eight bouts and mostly short ones. Christon Dilworth, Matthew Cohen and Zachary Siemasko all won by knockout; Adam Mayo, Bryan Bolch and Turpal Khamzayev all won by submission; only two of the eight fights reached the final round at all. Mike Ahearn of Animals MMA took the main event over Ryan Jett by unanimous decision across three rounds, and he and Bolch both left with championships.
Ring of Combat 91, on 18 September 2026, was a seven-fight card and produced the most unusual finish of the year. The main event between Robert Varricchio and Ryan Gerena was scored a draw after three rounds, and because it was a title fight the two were sent out for a fourth round to settle it; Varricchio came out of it with his championship intact. Beneath that, Adam Mayo edged Brian Weng on a split decision, Hunter Lewis took a unanimous decision over Caesar Nwokedi, Kyle Boller submitted Derrick Patterson, Dominic Parker outpointed Giorgi Lomtadze, Delano Ali-Matthews stopped David Cabrera by TKO, and David Gladfeller choked out Joshua Mercado. The promotion described a packed house and put the show out on Amazon Prime.
The film that arrived in July
The largest non-fight development of Neglia's year is Godfather of MMA: The Legacy of Louis Neglia, directed by Peter J. Normandia and produced by Edit Cellar, with cinematography by Rick Cook and editing by Hunter Siede. It went out as an exclusive early release at 10:30am on Sunday 5 July 2026 on the Swerve Combat Channel, carried through Amazon Prime Video, Roku, Fubo, Fire TV and Google TV. That first screening was free to friends, family, cast, crew and supporters, with a paid rental and purchase window following later in the summer; it is now available on Amazon Prime Video on demand.
Neglia posted a thank-you to viewers on 16 July 2026, after the early preview. The film's positioning is worth noting for anyone reading the promotion's standing in 2026: it pitches itself at the audience for sports documentaries in the mould of The Last Dance and Dark Side of the Ring, and its central argument is the pipeline claim — that the careers of more than 160 UFC fighters ran through a regional promotion in New Jersey and Long Island.
Westbury, the other half of the operation
Ring of Combat proper is the professional half. The rest of Neglia's calendar runs under Combat at The Space, at The Space in Westbury, New York, and it is a different kind of night: amateur, and mixed between kickboxing and MMA on the same bill. The 7 February 2026 edition ran eighteen matchups, two of them exhibitions, and the promotion called it a sold-out show, with Neglia noting that titles changed hands. Nicolas Ridolfi knocked out Julian Couture; Jordan Depomar and Margaret Berg won by TKO; Oluwafemi Aremo and Jack Zagarino took split decisions.
Further Westbury cards followed on 16 May 2026 and 3 October 2026. The relationship between the two series is straightforward — Westbury is where the amateurs get their rounds, Atlantic City is where the professionals get the belts and the stream.
Where it stands, September 2026
Sherdog's records credit Ring of Combat with 125 events. The promotion is not growing into anything else and shows no sign of trying to; the pattern of 2026 is the pattern of the previous decade, with Tropicana dates in March, June and September, Westbury dates in between, a new weight class added when the talent pool justified it, and the video going out through a streaming channel rather than a network.
Only one Ring of Combat date is currently on sale, at the Tropicana Showroom in Atlantic City. Anyone tracking the promotion for the next name worth knowing has three or four chances a year to do it, which is roughly how it has worked since 2002.
The show, now
A Ring of Combat night in Atlantic City is a casino showroom rather than an arena, and the 2026 cards have started at 8:30pm. The bill runs between seven and ten bouts with no separate opening act — the undercard of regional professionals is the support, working up to one or two championship fights at the top. The card tends to be short on rounds: at Ring of Combat 90 on 12 June 2026, six of the eight fights ended inside the distance and only two reached the final round, split across three knockouts and three submissions. Championship bouts carry a rule that shapes the finish of the evening: when Robert Varricchio and Ryan Gerena were scored a draw after three rounds in the Ring of Combat 91 main event on 18 September 2026, the two were sent back out for a fourth round to decide the title, which Varricchio kept. The promotion described a packed house for that show and streamed it on Amazon Prime, and Neglia's own account of the night thanked the regulars who turn up year after year. The Westbury version, Combat at The Space, is a longer and rougher evening — the 7 February 2026 card ran eighteen matchups including two exhibitions, amateur kickboxing and MMA on the same bill, and the promotion called it sold out.
