From Köksüz to two EPs: the second career of Savaş Alp Başar
A conservatory-trained clarinettist who won a film prize at 17 and now writes alternative rock, Savaş Alp Başar splits his year between a theatre he helps run and a growing run of concert dates — a dozen of which are currently on sale.
Ankara, a conservatory, and a surname that carries weight
Savaş Alp Başar was born in Ankara on 28 January 1996, the son of Lale and Kemal Başar and the grandson of the actor Savaş Başar. That lineage is not incidental to the work: he has said his grandfather is one of the three people who shaped him, alongside his uncle, the cellist Yalçın Başar, and his conservatory teacher Vladimir Zverev.
The training came before the acting. He did his secondary schooling at Bilkent University's music research school in Ankara, then moved to Istanbul to study clarinet and piano at Istanbul University State Conservatory, finishing his instrumental education at Pera Fine Arts High School. Only afterwards did he take a degree in acting at Beykent University, having already started performing at 17. The order matters, because it explains why a man widely filed as a television actor arrives on a rock stage with an ear for arrangement rather than a guitar picked up at university.
Köksüz, and a decade in front of cameras
The break came in 2013 with Köksüz, which brought him the Promising Young Male Actor prize at the 20th International Adana Altın Koza film festival. He was still a teenager. Screen work followed steadily rather than spectacularly: the television series Benim Hâlâ Umudum Var across 2013 and 2014, Aşk Yalanı Sever in 2016, Akıncı in 2021 and Teşkilat in 2024, with the films Sen Sağ Ben Selamet in 2016 and Under the Blanket in 2019 in between.
The stage work ran in parallel and, by his own account, mattered more. He appeared in Cyrano de Bergerac, Avare Müzikali, Gökten Gelen Adam, Tut Elimden Rovni and İnatçı Keçiler — the last of which he directed rather than acted in. Tut Elimden Rovni earned him the Üstün Akmen award for Most Promising Male Actor covering the 2019–22 period. He has also been candid about the conditions behind some of that work, saying flatly that crew members' rights were violated on Avare Müzikali.
2022: the turn to songs
The music career has a firm start date. In 2022 he signed with Cess Music — the label whose roster includes Cem Adrian — and put out three singles in quick succession: Anlamadım, Korkmaktan Korkma and Çocuk Yanım, two of them with videos. The first concert under his own name followed on Tuesday 27 December 2022 at The Wall in Kadıköy, Istanbul, billed as a launch show mixing his own compositions with reinterpretations of other people's. Early dates also took in DorockXL and Hayal Kahvesi, the two rooms most Istanbul rock acts cut their teeth in.
Speaking in May 2023, he set out the division of labour between the two halves of his working life plainly: acting was the vehicle he had for saying something about the world, but music was the thing he cared about more, the place where, as he put it, original thought can be expressed through the harmony called magic. He named İlhan İrem, King Crimson and Pink Floyd as the writers who showed him that a philosophy could be carried inside a song rather than bolted onto it.
Two EPs and a widening catalogue
The recorded output has grown at roughly the pace of a working actor's diary. Cumartesi arrived as a single in 2023, followed by the debut EP Yolun Başı on Cess Music the same year. In 2024 came a second EP, Matem, alongside the singles Ben Uyurken and Orkide. The most recent release is the single İyi Ki in 2026, which also has a video — only his third, after Anlamadım and Korkmaktan Korkma.
The register throughout is alternative rock in Turkish, written and sung in the first person, and the catalogue is deliberately small: nine releases in four years, no album yet. Ticket copy for his current shows describes an artist with two EPs and numerous singles who is steadily folding new, unreleased material into the set rather than waiting for a full-length to justify a tour.
Theatre and music as one job
Başar has not treated the two careers as competitors. He composed the original music for the musical Bana Amy De, which took the Musical of the Year prize at the Yeni Tiyatro awards; he won Best Male Musical Actor of the Year at the same awards for his performance in it. He also directed Kırık Boynuz'un Hikâyesi, and worked as assistant director and music director on Kemal Başar'dan Öylesine Hikâyeler, a production built around his grandfather's legacy.
He now holds a formal post at Tiyatro Keyfi in Istanbul as music director and assistant artistic director, acting in productions there while designing the music for others. His most recent credit at the company is Penceredeki Atlar in 2026, on which he is both performer and director.
Where things stand in 2026
The current position is unusual and worth stating precisely: his concerts are largely housed inside the theatre he works for. Tickets on sale now include a date at Tiyatro Keyfi Lab in Istanbul on the European side — in a room called the Savaş Başar Sahnesi, named for his grandfather — on Wednesday 21 October at 20:30, promoted by Tiyatro Keyfi itself, with prices from 750 lira and the listing flagging the last 80 seats. A further Istanbul date at Şişli Belediyesi Kent Kültür Merkezi on 2 October appears on his Apple Music profile. Twelve dates are currently on sale in total.
That is a modest scale, and the framing is honest about it: a theatre company selling out its own 80-odd remaining seats for a musician on its payroll is not a national tour. What it does provide is a fixed room, a reliable audience and a stage he can programme himself while the catalogue fills out. Asked in 2023 what he wanted from all of it, his answer was not a career plan — he said he wanted to be a good person, enjoy life, and say his piece through art.
The show, now
The shows are small, seated and mostly staged inside Tiyatro Keyfi's own building in Istanbul, which acts as promoter as well as host. The next confirmed date is Wednesday 21 October at 20:30 at Tiyatro Keyfi Lab, in the hall named Savaş Başar Sahnesi after his grandfather, with tickets from 750 lira and the seller listing only 80 remaining; a 2 October date at Şişli Belediyesi Kent Kültür Merkezi is also listed, and twelve dates are on sale in total. The format has not changed much since the first headline show at The Wall in Kadıköy on 27 December 2022: an alternative rock set built from his own songs — drawn from the two EPs, Yolun Başı and Matem, and the singles either side of them — interleaved with covers in both Turkish and English, and with unreleased material worked into the running order as it is written. Official billing makes a point of the actor-and-musician double act rather than pretending to a pure rock pedigree, and no support act is advertised on the current dates. Published reviews of the concerts are not yet in circulation, so any account of audience response would be guesswork.
