Thirty-five years on Turkish stages, and now a murder the audience has to solve
Şebnem Özinal came to acting from a geology degree and a Haldun Dormen invitation, and has spent three decades moving between Istanbul's repertory companies, daily television and touring comedy. This autumn she is one of eight suspects in the interactive whodunnit Karanlıkta Kumpas, with eight dates on sale between 3 November and 29 December 2026.
A geology degree, a beauty contest and Haldun Dormen
Güzin Şebnem Özinal was born in Ankara on 1 June 1971 and reached the stage by a route that avoided the conservatoire entirely. She took her degree in geology engineering at Istanbul Technical University, and while studying wrote theatre interviews for a current-affairs magazine — which put her in the auditoriums she would later work in, on the wrong side of the stalls. In 1991 she entered Miss Turkey.
By her own account the contest is what did it: a placing in the top twenty put her in front of Haldun Dormen, who responded not with a screen test but with a part. She joined Dormen Tiyatrosu with the comedy Çılgın Sonbahar in 1991, and the production then ran for five or six seasons — an unusually long first job, and one that taught her the mechanics of holding a comic evening together night after night. Talking to Anadolu Ajansı on 1 June 2022, she said plainly that Dormen's willingness to cast someone with no formal training was the reason she has a career at all.
The companies that trained her instead of a school
What followed was a working life inside Turkey's private and municipal theatre companies rather than a single institutional home. She has appeared with Dostlar Tiyatrosu, Tiyatro İstanbul, Ali Poyrazoğlu Tiyatrosu, Tiyatrokare and Dormen Tiyatrosu, and in the 2022 interview she named Gencay Gürün, Ali Poyrazoğlu and Genco Erkal among the directors she learned from — a list that spans boulevard comedy, political theatre and the classical repertoire.
Her stage credits run to roughly sixteen documented productions, among them Yazlıkçılar, Şahane Züğürtler, Amphytrion 2000 and Popcorn. The pattern that emerges is less that of a leading lady than of a dependable ensemble player — the performer a producer casts when a comedy needs someone who can land a line and also carry a straight scene when the laughs stop.
Two stage parts that defined the last few years
The longest-running thread is Seninle Evlenir Miyim?, a two-hander comedy about mismatched lovers that she plays opposite Yosi Mizrahi. By June 2022 it had already taken the annual theatre prize at Turkey's Golden Life Awards, and it has continued to tour Turkish cities since — the kind of show that stays in the schedule because audiences keep turning up for it rather than because anyone relaunches it.
The counterweight arrived on 16 January 2024, when Taner Barlas's stage adaptation of Sabahattin Ali's 1943 novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna opened at Caddebostan Kültür Merkezi, with further dates that same week at Trump Sahne, Ataşehir Duru Tiyatro and Fişekhane. Barlas both adapted and directed, and appeared in it; Özinal performed alongside Ekin Aksu, Ceren Benderlioğlu and Kıvanç Kürkçü, taking three separate roles across the evening. In the same period she played Varya in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard with the Sahnekarlar company — a reminder that the comic touring work has always run in parallel with repertoire.
The screen work that kept her in living rooms
Özinal has been on Turkish television since 1994, and the credits read like a map of the country's popular drama. Böyle mi Olacaktı ran from 1997 to 2003; Çiçek Taksi followed in 2003; 2006 brought both Avrupa Yakası and Doktorlar. Her film debut came in 2000 with Abuzer Kadayıf, where the part of Sema established her with cinema audiences, and the same year she appeared in Güle Güle. Later features include Fesupanallah in 2007, Kırmızı Işık in 2008, Hayatımız Roman in 2023 and Son Dilek in 2024.
Since 2026 she has been part of the cast of Gelin, the Kanal 7 daily serial, playing Gülfem. Daily drama is relentless work — a strip broadcast demands pages a day — and doing it while touring a play is the practical reason her theatre dates cluster into single evenings in different cities rather than long sit-down runs in one house.
Away from the work, she married Şefik Öztek in 2005 and the marriage ended in divorce in 2020. She has a daughter, Ayşe, and in 2022 described the separation as an amicable one and her daughter as the centre of her attention.
Autumn 2026: eight suspects, one cake knife
Her current production is Karanlıkta Kumpas, which opened on Friday 28 August 2026 at 21:00 at the Ulaş Bayam Open-Air Theatre in Aliağa, as part of the Aliağa Sanat Günleri festival. It is best known as the show that brought Şafak Sezer back to the stage after roughly two decades away, and the Aliağa opening drew a large local crowd; the district mayor, Serkan Acar, marked the occasion from the stage.
The piece is an interactive comic whodunnit written by Ali Erkan Ersezer and directed by Ebru Kara, with set and costume design by Candan Günay, lighting by Kemal Yiğitcan and music by Kemal Alpan, produced by Sanart. The premise: an investment adviser named Evren is celebrating his sixtieth birthday at a mountain house in a snowstorm when the lights cut out and he is stabbed with the cake knife. The roads are blocked, the killer is still in the room, and six characters have a motive — an estranged wife, a business partner, a housekeeper among them. Commissioner Aslan questions them with the audience acting as witnesses, and the room's decisions determine how the evening ends. Özinal plays within an eight-strong ensemble alongside Sezer, Zeynep Kankonde, Özgür Özgülgün, Burak Alkış, Deniz Oral, Ömür Arpacı and Bensu Begoviç.
By early October the production had already played Trump Sahne in Istanbul; Hürriyet covered it on 3 October 2026, describing a detective format in which the audience hunts the killer alongside the commissioner. The run now moves back out across the country.
How she talks about the job
Özinal is unsentimental about what the work actually consists of. On the touring pattern she told Anadolu Ajansı: "We play 50% in Istanbul and 50% outside, and that makes us happy." On the genre she has spent most of her career in: making people laugh is extremely difficult, and more so in the present climate. She has also been sharp about the culture around theatre, arguing that being an intellectual is not the same thing as seeing a play or reposting something improving on Instagram.
That attitude explains the shape of the current year better than any career plan would. A daily serial pays the bills and keeps her visible; a comedy that has toured for years keeps the touring muscle working; and a new interactive piece built around audience interrogation puts her back in the one situation no amount of television experience prepares an actor for — a room that answers back.
The show, now
The show on sale now is Karanlıkta Kumpas, an interactive comic whodunnit written by Ali Erkan Ersezer and directed by Ebru Kara, rated 12+ and starting at 20:30 at every venue in the current block. The set is a snowbound mountain house where investment adviser Evren has been stabbed with the cake knife during his sixtieth birthday party; with the roads blocked, Commissioner Aslan — Şafak Sezer, back on stage after about twenty years away — works through six suspects with the audience enlisted as witnesses, and the room's questions and choices steer how the case closes. There is no support act: the evening is an eight-hander, Özinal playing alongside Sezer, Zeynep Kankonde, Özgür Özgülgün, Burak Alkış, Deniz Oral, Ömür Arpacı and Bensu Begoviç, on Candan Günay's set with Kemal Yiğitcan's lighting doing the heavy work at the blackout. Eight dates are listed: Bostanlı Suat Taşer Salonu in İzmir on 3 November, AKM Aspendos Salonu in Antalya on 8 November, Merkezefendi Belediyesi Kültür Merkezi in Denizli on 9 November, Selçuklu Kongre Merkezi in Konya on 10 November, then Trump Sahne in Istanbul on 11 and 26 November and 15 and 29 December, with tickets from ₺1,000 to ₺2,000. The Aliağa premiere on 28 August 2026 drew a large festival crowd, and Hürriyet's 3 October report on the Istanbul dates described a full house being handed the investigation rather than watching one.
