Eighty authors, one subgenre: Rome tests whether sport romance can fill a congress centre
The Sport Romance Event is a single-day reading fair at Rome's Auditorium della Tecnica on 14 November 2026, billed as the first Italian event built entirely around sports-set romance. It is a spin-off from the Festival del Romance Italiano circuit, which has been running since June 2019 and put 280 authors in a Milan studio complex in March.
From Artogne to a hall in EUR
The subject here is not a band or a touring company but a trade-fair-shaped reading event, and it is brand new. The Sport Romance Event runs for one day only, 14 November 2026, from 10am to 5pm, at the Centro Congressi Auditorium della Tecnica on Viale Umberto Tupini in the EUR quarter of Rome. It is billed as the first Italian event built entirely around sport romance, and it is co-produced by two organisations with very different jobs: Festival Romance Italiano, which supplies the authors and the publishers, and Fably, which supplies the merchandise and the games.
The festival half of that partnership brings the track record. It is run by L.O. Agency, a literary events outfit based in Artogne, in the province of Brescia, founded and led by Lidia Ottelli. The agency dates the Festival del Romance Italiano to June 2019 and describes it as the fixed appointment for readers of the romance genre and its shades, built to put authors and readers inside one large event rather than scattering them across bookshop appearances. The guest rosters archived on the festival's own site run from 2019 through 2022, 2023 and 2024, then split into separate Milan and Florence editions in 2025 and a Milan edition in 2026. It is a circuit, not a single annual date, and the Rome day in November is the first time one strand of the genre has been given a hall of its own.
The Rome precedent
Rome has hosted this operation before. On 21 September 2024 the Festival del Romance Italiano took Sala Michelangelo at the Hotel Marriott Park for a 10am-to-6pm day, with admission at €30 for the whole thing and more than 100 authors in attendance — writers from the large publishing houses sitting alongside established self-publishing names. Ottelli organised it through L.O. Agency in collaboration with the international agency Kinetic Vibe. It was the first Rome edition, following an inaugural Milan outing in March 2024, and it was followed by a return to Superstudio Maxi in Milan on 15 March 2025.
The 2024 Rome line-up gives a sense of who turns up to these days: Valentina Ferraro, Victor Diamandis, Hellen Ligios, Ginevra Mantovani, Ellie B. Luin, Selene Piromallo, Rita Nardi, Naike Ror, Jude Archer and the French author C.S. Quill, among others. The billing also counted journalists, bloggers, YouTubers, designers and literary agents in the room. That is the pitch underneath the signings — proximity to the industry, not just a signature on a title page.
The scale Milan set
The benchmark for what the Rome day is trying to do was set eight months earlier. The sixth Milan edition ran on 14 March 2026 at Superstudio Maxi, Via Moncucco 35, from 10am to 7pm. L.O. Agency's own billing for it was more than 1,500 readers and 280 authors, plus publishers, editors and assorted publishing professionals. Local press framed the day as signings, unmediated conversation with authors, and the chance to buy forthcoming titles in advance of their publication dates. The organisers also trailed a Florence stop, with the location to be announced the following week.
That advance-copy detail is worth holding on to, because it explains the shape of the Rome event. Nothing is performed from a stage to a seated audience. The commerce is the programme: a reader buys a ticket to get into a room where the books, the people who wrote them and the small presses that published them are all physically present, and where some of the stock is not yet in shops.
Why sport romance, and who is bringing books
Sport romance is the strand of contemporary romance set in and around professional sport — ice hockey, American football, football, motorsport — where the season, the squad and the training ground supply the structure that other romances get from a workplace or a small town. In Italy it has been one of the strands carrying the genre's recent commercial run, largely through self-publishing and social-media-driven word of mouth, and the decision to give it a standalone event rather than a corner of the general festival is a straightforward read on where the demand is.
The organisers put the Rome author count at 80, mixing some of the best-known names in the Italian market with self-publishers. The publishers listed as taking part are Sperling & Kupfer, Newton Compton, Magazzini Salani, Always Publishing, Queen Edizioni, Nola Sprayed Edges, HeartBeat Edizioni, Panda Edizioni, Cocktail Edizioni and Just Read — a deliberate mix of large general houses and small romance specialists, several of which exist primarily to serve this genre and its collectors' editions.
Fably, the co-organiser, is the other half of that economy: an online shop selling bookish goods — magnetic covers, e-reader sleeves, accessories — with worldwide shipping, which works alongside the Fanlettura reader community. Its name is on the day's dedicated games space, The Fably Arena, and on the prize pool. A reading event co-produced by a merchandise brand is a reasonable description of where the romance market currently sits.
Where it stands, late October 2026
As of now the event is three weeks out and has been in the Italian book press since 22 October 2026, when the programme — the author count, the publisher list, the workshops and the arena — was laid out in detail. Tickets are sold through Ticketmaster Italy, where the event is filed under Arts and Theatre, in the Cultural sub-category, with a single date on sale; the link circulating for it routes through the platform's waiting-room queue rather than straight to the basket.
There is nothing yet to judge the day on. No attendance figure, no reviews, no second edition to compare it against. The only honest guide is the Milan edition in March, which the organisers billed at 280 authors and 1,500-plus readers across nine hours, and the Rome general edition of September 2024, which drew over 100 authors at €30 a head. On that evidence a one-subgenre day with 80 authors is a measured bet rather than a speculative one — but it is still a bet, and 14 November is when it gets settled.
The show, now
The day is a seven-hour circuit, not a show: doors at 10am, out by 5pm, in one hall of a congress centre in EUR. Roughly 80 authors each take a dedicated station for signing, so the rhythm of the day is set by queues and table-hopping rather than by a stage — there is no support act in the musical sense, and no single room everyone faces. Three workshops run on themes tied to the genre, led by Valentina Ferraro, Cordelia Evora and Marilena Barbagallo. Alongside them sits The Fably Arena, a games space run by the co-organising merchandise brand, plus a set of "missions" run by members of the Fanlettura team, with prizes of two tickets to the Milan romance festival and five €50 vouchers for the Fably shop. Ten publishers, from Sperling & Kupfer and Newton Compton down to small romance-only presses such as HeartBeat and Cocktail Edizioni, sell and stamp alongside the self-publishers. Tickets go through Ticketmaster Italy, one date only. Because the event has not yet happened there are no reviews or attendance figures to report; the nearest comparison is the parent festival's Milan edition of 14 March 2026 at Superstudio Maxi, billed at 280 authors and more than 1,500 readers across 10am to 7pm, where the pattern was signings, unmediated conversation with authors, and forthcoming titles sold ahead of their publication dates.
