Thirteen songs, no encore: Static Dress take Injury Episode across America
Static Dress are the Leeds post-hardcore quartet who spent four years off the UK headline circuit building comics, video games and a second record. Injury Episode arrived on 29 May 2026 and has put them in the biggest rooms of their career, with a 27-date US run under way.
Galleries, a camera, and a practice room in Glasgow
Static Dress formed in Leeds in 2018 around Olli Appleyard on vocals, Sam Kay on drums, Tom Black on guitar and Connor Reilly on bass. All but Reilly had come out of the melodic hardcore band Galleries. Appleyard's previous job turned out to be the useful part of the CV: he had worked as a photographer and videographer for other bands, shooting around the Leeds venue circuit and the Key Club before moving on to international rock campaigns. The band therefore arrived with its own visual department rather than hiring one, which explains a great deal about everything that followed.
The first single, 'Clean', came out on 14 August 2019 with a video Appleyard and Kay made themselves. The first live performance followed on 3 October 2019 in a Glasgow practice room. By the start of 2020 they were opening for Counterparts on a UK run that ran from 6 to 20 February. Lockdown then removed the touring half of the plan, so they kept releasing instead: 'Adaptive Taste' in November 2019, 'Safeword' in April 2020 filmed over FaceTime, 'Indecent' in July and 'For the Attention of…' in September. Kerrang! readers voted them New Band of the Year in 2021 on the strength of singles alone, before any album existed.
June 2021 reset the line-up. Black and Kay departed; Sam Ogden took the drum stool and a second guitarist credited only as 'Contrast' took the other, his identity withheld for nearly four years. The single 'Sober Exit(s)' landed on 5 November 2021, and the EP Prologue… (Comic Book Soundtrack) on 3 December with a companion comic illustrated by Tanya Kenny — the first clear signal that this band intended to publish as well as record.
Rouge Carpet Disaster, and the cottage in Wales
The debut album Rouge Carpet Disaster was released on 18 May 2022. Ten of its tracks were cut in a three-week session at a Welsh cottage with Erik Bickerstaffe of Loathe producing, with the earlier singles bolted on afterwards. The whole thing was made without a label. Appleyard has described it as done on a budget and as the product of the people who had been around the band from the first day, and recalled spending nine hours in a cupboard rewriting his parts for 'Welcome In' until Bickerstaffe got him out.
Its subject, by Appleyard's account, is death in Hollywood and death on the red carpet, carrying forward the characters Emile and Nancy introduced on Prologue… A label deal with Roadrunner Records followed in 2023. Connor Reilly left on 30 January 2023, citing personal issues, and George Holding took over on bass.
Rather than move on from the record, they kept reopening it. Rouge Carpet Disaster (Redux) Volume 2 was surprise-released on 20 October 2023 and Volume 3 on 3 November. A playable Game Boy Color cartridge, Rouge Carpet Disaster: The Video Game, followed on 7 March 2024. Standalone singles kept the thread alive: 'Crying' on 15 May 2024, 'Death to the Overground' on 21 March 2025, and 'Face' on 3 April 2025, which finally named Contrast as Vincent Weight. The Heavy Music Awards had already given them Best Breakthrough Live Artist in 2023.
Sumerian, Underoath, and Injury Episode
The band signed to Sumerian Records on 15 January 2026 and put out 'Human Props' the same day. 'Nostalgia Kills', recorded with Underoath, arrived on 1 April alongside the announcement of a second album. In the weeks before release they staged a series of free events billed as A Live Death Display in London, Leeds, New York and Los Angeles, at which phones were not allowed in the room. A self-made psychological horror game, The Magistrate's Loop, went out on 21 May. Injury Episode itself followed on 29 May 2026.
The album's story concerns a pair of celebrity twins, Maeve and Sarah, hounded and harassed until the day they die — the Hollywood-death idea from the debut pushed into something nastier. It is the first Static Dress full-length written with contributions from all four members, and Appleyard pushes past the usual clean-and-screamed split into hushed warnings, distorted yells and guttural textures used for theatrical effect. 'Nostalgia Kills' sits alongside '…hospice', 'lip critic', 'dull blade disguise' and 'Classic. Death. Pose.' as the tracks reviewers kept returning to.
Reception was strong and broad. DIY gave it four stars, Sarah Jamieson calling the band one with grand ambition and ideas and a passion for the genre that feels completely invigorating. NME described beautifully brutal post-hardcore from defiant art punks, and noted a record that pays no attention to daytime radio or short-form virality. Album of the Year's critic aggregate settled at 82 out of 100. Appleyard's own framing of the industry the record is pushing against is blunter: music, he told NME, is being shifted out like Happy Meals at McDonald's.
Where they stand in November 2026
The autumn headline run was their first UK and European tour in four years, with tickets on general sale from 5 June 2026. It opened at La Maroquinerie in Paris on 20 October and took in Club Volta in Cologne, Bahnhof Pauli in Hamburg, Ekko in Utrecht and Kavka Oudaan in Antwerp before crossing to The Garage in Glasgow on 28 October, Academy 2 in Manchester on the 29th, the Electric Ballroom in London on the 30th and the O2 Academy 2 in Birmingham on 1 November. Soul Blind, from New York, and Holder, from Massachusetts, played the full run; the Leeds band Love Rarely were added to the UK dates. These were the largest rooms Static Dress have headlined, and they followed support slots with Bring Me The Horizon and Motionless In White.
North America came next: 27 headline dates announced on 18 August, with general sale on the 21st. The run began at the Shelter at Saint Andrew's Hall in Detroit on 4 November, Chicago on the 5th and Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St Paul on the 6th, and continues through Minneapolis, North Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City, Boise, Seattle, Portland, Berkeley, Santa Ana, Los Angeles and Phoenix, then Austin, Dallas, Houston, Orlando and Miami, then Atlanta, Greensboro, Washington DC, Cleveland, New York, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Hamden and Boston, finishing on 6 December. I Promised The World and Car Underwater open every night; Sherane take the third slot from 4 to 18 November, Concealer from the 20th to the 25th, and septemberistheonlytimeidontthinkofyou from the 27th to 6 December.
By any measure of activity this is their heaviest year: setlist.fm has logged 79 Static Dress performances across 2026, between the album campaign, festival dates and two headline legs.
What the show is now
The Injury Episode show is tight rather than sprawling. Thirteen songs is the standard length, and the running times bear that out — the Electric Ballroom set ran from 8.30pm to 9.45pm after a 6pm door, and Glasgow from 9.05pm to 10.20pm. 'lose the rain' plays in off tape as the intro and 'Adult Diamond' closes. There is usually no encore: across 58 complete 2026 setlists, 50 ended with the main set.
What fills the middle was partly decided by the audience. Before the tour the band put a setlist builder on their own site, asking fans to drag between ten and twelve songs from across Injury Episode, Rouge Carpet Disaster, Prologue… and the standalone singles into a running order, with the results drawn on Twitch on Wednesday 23 September. The songs that recur across the autumn and US dates are 'questioning', 'Pharmacy Film', 'Nostalgia Kills', '…hospice', 'clean.', 'Push rope', 'Courtney, Just Relax', 'Death to the Overground', 'human props', 'sweet.' and 'Classic.Death.Pose'.
No national review of the autumn headline run had been published at the time of writing, so the live evidence is circumstantial rather than critical: a step up to Academy 2-sized rooms on both sides of the Atlantic, a near-nightly schedule through to early December, and a band whose pre-album events deliberately banned phones to keep the room looking at the stage.
The show, now
The current Injury Episode show runs thirteen songs in roughly seventy-five minutes — the Electric Ballroom on 30 October 2026 played 8.30pm to 9.45pm, Glasgow's Garage 9.05pm to 10.20pm on the 28th — opening with 'lose the rain' from tape and closing on 'Adult Diamond', with no encore on most nights this year (50 of 58 complete 2026 setlists ended after the main set). The running order was shaped by a public vote: fans dragged ten to twelve songs from Injury Episode, Rouge Carpet Disaster, Prologue… and the singles into a builder on the band's own site, with results drawn live on Twitch on 23 September 2026, and the recurring picks include 'questioning', 'Pharmacy Film', 'Nostalgia Kills', '…hospice', 'clean.', 'Push rope', 'Courtney, Just Relax', 'Death to the Overground', 'human props' and 'Classic.Death.Pose'. Support on the UK and European leg was Soul Blind and Holder throughout, with Love Rarely added for the UK dates; the 27-date US run that opened in Detroit on 4 November has I Promised The World and Car Underwater every night, plus Sherane to 18 November, Concealer from the 20th to the 25th and septemberistheonlytimeidontthinkofyou through to Boston on 6 December. These are the biggest headline venues the band have played, following support slots with Bring Me The Horizon and Motionless In White; no national press review of the autumn headline run had appeared at the time of writing, and the band's phone-free pre-album events signalled how they would rather the room behaved.
