A thousand candles and a bandoneón-shaped hole: the two Polish productions trading under one tango title
Tango przy świecach is not a band but a touring concert title, and in Poland it currently belongs to two rival promoters running the same idea — a string quartet playing Piazzolla and Gardel in a room full of candles — on different terms. Three dates are on sale this autumn, in Kraków, Katowice and Warsaw.
A title that travels, rather than an act that tours
There is no group called Tango przy świecach. The name describes a format: an hour or so of tango arrangements played by a string quartet in a hall dressed with candles, sold as a single evening at a fixed ticket price, moved from city to city and recast with whichever players are available locally. It belongs to the same commercial family as the candlelit classical nights that have spread across European cities since the late 2010s, and in Poland it has settled into a recognisable shape — a museum, a church refectory, a university aula or a cinema, four strings on a small platform, and a room that has had its overhead lighting switched off.
What makes the Polish version worth untangling is that two separate promoters are currently running it under near-identical names. Candle Live Music sells it as Koncert wśród tysiąca świec: Tango przy świecach. Everlight Concerts, a project of the Fundacja na Rzecz Pomocy Pestka, sells it simply as Tango przy świecach. Both list through the same ticket aggregators, which is why a search throws up the same title attached to different running times, different line-ups and prices that range from 80.90 zł to 180 zł. They are not the same show.
Candle Live Music and the literal thousand candles
Candle Live Music describes itself as the first operator to bring candlelit concerts to Poland, and it runs at volume: its own site currently carries 114 dates under the candle-concert heading, plus a thirteen-date Small Philharmonic strand and four Ballet by Candlelight evenings. The tango edition was one of its 2025 programmes. On 14 September 2025 it played the Stary Refektarz of the Dominican monastery in Wrocław at 18:00, tickets at 84 zł, with the Soltano String Quartet — Ewa Podgórska on first violin, Marta Łobos on second, Wiktor Rudzik on viola and Bożena Kotwińska on cello. Three weeks later, on 4 October, it moved to the Sala Lubrańskiego at Collegium Minus, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, for a 17:00 start, with tickets between 90 and 160 zł and a minimum age of eight.
That production runs about 60 minutes and is purely instrumental: four players, no accordion, no dancers, and a staging claim — a thousand candles — that it takes literally. The organising entity behind the Poznań date is listed as Experience Creator Agata Świerzyńska. As of early October 2026 the tango programme is not on Candle Live Music's forward schedule; its October listings run to Viva Flamenco and Hans Zimmer film music in Łódź on 10 October, a Michael Jackson tribute in Świnoujście on 3 October and Zielona Góra on 4 October, and piano and Dragon Ball tribute nights in Katowice and Wrocław. The tango title has, for now, passed to the other side.
Everlight, the accordion and the dance pair
Everlight Concerts runs the version currently on sale, and it is a fuller staging. The music comes from the Antidotum Quartet, a Łódź string quartet of two violins, viola and cello that also plays Everlight's other themed programmes — 1980s synth hits, film scores, Stranger Things and Bridgerton. For tango it is joined by an accordionist and by Duo Candela, a dance pair who also appear in Everlight's ¡Viva España! Spanish-night programme. The running time is about 70 minutes.
Everlight is explicit that its candles are not candles. Its own page states that the production uses professional LED units imitating a real flame, on safety grounds at mass-attendance events — a plain admission that sits oddly against a rival selling the same repertoire by the light of a thousand real wicks, and one of the few points on which the two productions can be compared directly. The dance is pitched the same way: a couple whose choreography accompanies the music rather than a full theatrical piece.
The autumn run opened at the Sala Biała of the Bazar Poznański in Poznań on 12 September 2026, doors at 18:45, tickets from 180 zł, and continued to ARTKOMBINAT Scena Monopolis on ul. Kopcińskiego in Łódź on Sunday 20 September, a 19:00 start with entry from 18:45 and tickets from 125 zł. Everlight discounts aggressively through rolling promotional codes — PRE20SEP took 15 per cent off the Łódź date, with equivalents running for December and January — which in practice makes the advertised face value a ceiling rather than a price.
The repertoire, and what is missing from it
Both productions draw on the same canon. La cumparsita by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez opens the field; Astor Piazzolla supplies Libertango, Oblivion, Adiós Nonino and Vuelvo al Sur; Carlos Gardel supplies Por una cabeza; Jacob Gade's Jalousie (Tango Tzigane) and Ángel Villoldo's El choclo fill out the older end. Everlight's programme adds Polish interwar tangos — Ta ostatnia niedziela and Umówiłem się z nią na dziewiątą — which is the more interesting editorial decision of the two, since it puts Buenos Aires and prewar Warsaw in the same hour and lets an audience hear how much the second borrowed from the first.
The arrangements are written for strings, with accordion in the Everlight version. There is no bandoneón in either. That is the structural compromise at the centre of the format: the instrument that gives Piazzolla his attack and his wheeze is replaced by a piano accordion or by nothing at all, and the quartet has to manufacture the bite with bow pressure and percussive effects. Audiences who come for the atmosphere rarely mind. Those who know the Quinteto Nuevo Tango recordings will hear the gap immediately.
Where it stands in October 2026
Three dates are on sale. Kraków takes it on Saturday 24 October 2026 at 17:30, at the Muzeum Armii Krajowej im. gen. Emila Fieldorfa Nila, from 95.90 zł. Katowice follows on Sunday 25 October at 17:00 at Scena Gliwicka 120, from 80.90 zł — the cheapest date of the run. Warsaw closes it on Saturday 21 November at 19:00 at Kino Wisła, from 91.90 zł. The minimum age is six, with under-16s admitted accompanied by an adult.
The economics are visible in the scheduling. Everlight's series page lists 44 events across Poland, and several cities take two or three sittings on one day — Warsaw has three on 11 October — with the candle rig and the players staying put between them. The venues are borrowed rather than built for music: a wartime resistance museum, a cinema, a converted distillery complex, a nineteenth-century merchants' hall. Across all its candlelit programmes, not tango alone, Everlight carries an average rating of 4.84 out of five from 32 comments on kupbilecik.pl, with attendees describing an intimate room and unusual arrangements.
What ticket-holders actually report
The reviews left under the 2025 Candle Live Music tango dates are a useful corrective to the marketing, because they are specific about what goes wrong. The single harshest, from a reviewer named Piotr, scored it one out of five on exactly the right grounds: a candlelit concert that starts at 17:00 in a hall with daylight coming in makes no sense. Małgorzata gave four out of five and called the concert beautiful apart from the chairs, which she described in capitals as tragically uncomfortable. Another attendee found the music excellent but the Dominican refectory crowded and stuffy. A recurring complaint concerns value: an hour of music, several reported, is short for the price, and 90 minutes would be fairer.
The positive notes are just as plain. Iwona and Zygmunt both scored it five out of five, the latter calling it a proper encounter with culture. Others singled out the breadth of the programme, from early tangos to Piazzolla, and the standard of playing from a young quartet. The pattern across both productions is consistent: the musicianship is not where the risk lies. The risk is the room — its seating, its ventilation, and whether the promoter has booked a start time late enough for the central gimmick to work.
The show, now
The show on sale this autumn runs about 70 minutes straight through, without an interval, and is built around the Antidotum Quartet — two violins, viola and cello — joined by an accordionist, with the dance pair Duo Candela appearing through the evening in choreography that accompanies the music rather than forming a separate theatrical piece. The set moves between Argentine standards (La cumparsita, Por una cabeza, El choclo, Jalousie) and Piazzolla (Libertango, Oblivion, Adiós Nonino, Vuelvo al Sur), with Polish interwar tangos such as Ta ostatnia niedziela and Umówiłem się z nią na dziewiątą folded in. There is no support act; the room itself is the staging, lit by professional LED candles that imitate a flame — a substitution Everlight states openly on safety grounds, and the clearest difference from the rival Candle Live Music production, which uses real wicks. Doors tend to open 15 minutes before the start, seating is unreserved in most venues and the minimum age is six, with under-16s accompanied. Venues are borrowed spaces rather than concert halls: the Home Army Museum in Kraków on 24 October at 17:30 from 95.90 zł, Scena Gliwicka 120 in Katowice on 25 October at 17:00 from 80.90 zł, and Kino Wisła in Warsaw on 21 November at 19:00 from 91.90 zł. Everlight's candlelit series averages 4.84 out of five across 32 reviews on kupbilecik.pl, with attendees praising the arrangements and the intimacy of the rooms; the complaints logged against earlier tango dates under the rival banner are consistently about the venues rather than the playing — hard chairs, a stuffy and crowded refectory, and an early start that left daylight in the hall and the candles doing nothing.
