The Disco Biscuits

From campus basements to a scene of their own

The Disco Biscuits coalesced in Philadelphia in 1995, when Jon “Barber” Gutwillig, Marc Brownstein, Aron Magner and original drummer Sam Altman met at the University of Pennsylvania. Early releases Encephalous Crime (1996) and The Uncivilized Area (1998) sketched the group’s blend of jam‑band improvisation with techno‑leaning pulses that fans dubbed “trance‑fusion”, paving the way for They Missed the Perfume (2001). Through those years they gigged hard, founded the electronic‑leaning jamband gathering Camp Bisco, and developed the long‑form segues and “inversions” that still structure their sets.

They have history at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, first appearing there on 22 July 2001 as the opening act on a Phil Lesh & Friends/RatDog bill; Brownstein even told the crowd that SPAC hosted his first‑ever gig as a concertgoer. In the present cycle they returned to the venue on 3 July 2026 in a support role for Goose.

Operas, scores and the studio return

Long before concept records came back into fashion, the Biscuits were writing narrative suites for the stage. Gutwillig’s Hot Air Balloon (1998) and Brownstein’s Chemical Warfare Brigade (debuted by Electron on 18 August 2000, then by the Biscuits on 30 December 2000) remain touchstones that still resurface in setlists and, in 2026, full‑show fan polls. The band has also taken to live film scoring over the decades, from Akira (1999) to Tron (2015), The Fifth Element (performed at The Caverns on 11 March 2023) and an improvised score to 2001: A Space Odyssey on Halloween 2024.

The most consequential recent entry in their catalogue is Revolution in Motion, released on 29 March 2024 and produced by Cloudchord. A 14‑track sci‑fi “space opera”, it’s their first full studio set of original material since 2011 and came with an animated film component. They premiered the album front‑to‑back at Webster Hall, New York, on release weekend, with Erin Boyd and Matteo Scammell voicing characters and Cloudchord guesting on guitar; visuals by Blunt Action and Todd Kushnir joined LD Herm Schneider’s lights and lasers. The show was released to streaming via nugs.net.

A reset in the engine room, and a resilient core

Drummer Allen Aucoin, who joined in 2005 and powered the group for two decades, departed in October 2025. The band announced that all previously scheduled 2025–2026 dates would continue, and Marlon B. Lewis — a Philadelphia player known from Star Kitchen — took the drum chair across late 2025 and into 2026. The change kicked off at Hulaween 2025 and has since bedded in on club shows and festival sets.

The past year has also seen the group welcome back original drummer Sam Altman for a one‑off guest appearance: on 11 June 2026 at The Paramount in Huntington, New York, Altman handled the second set while Lewis shifted to an auxiliary percussion rig, a well‑received nod to the band’s earliest chemistry. That reunion was trailed publicly by the band asking fans to request songs for the occasion.

On stage, reviewers through 2024–26 have emphasised both the renewed discipline of the compositions and the elasticity of the improvisation. In March 2024, Arts Fuse called the band “reborn” after a Washington, DC run; in April 2026 Grateful Web praised a “precision” performance at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas that felt like anything but a mere after‑party. The year‑end 2025 Boston run, with a three‑set New Year’s Eve billed as a “Boston Techno Party”, underlined how the quartet still toggles between guitar‑led trance‑fusion and a more electronic frame.

Touring state of play in 2026

The touring picture in 2026 has mixed headline dates, collaborative one‑offs and festival appearances. Spring brought two sold‑out nights at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas on 24–25 April; early summer opened at The Paramount in Huntington on 11 June, then a support slot with Goose at SPAC on 3 July. Mid‑summer schedule items included headlining the AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, across 24–25 July.

Into the autumn, the band announced a late‑September Midwestern swing built around Nocturnal Valley Music & Arts Festival in French Village, Missouri, where they are slated to play both a Disco Biscuits set and a Tractorbeam set on 25 September. The run is followed by 2–3 October shows in Atlantic City’s Tropicana Showroom, with tickets on sale via the usual routes. The group’s own site lists further September–October rooms including Saint Andrew’s Hall (Detroit) and Bogart’s (Cincinnati).

What the show is built from now

Across 2026, club and theatre nights typically run two sets plus encore, often between 2½ and just under three hours total. Recent examples include Asheville (Third Room, 30–31 August 2026) and Atlanta (Variety Playhouse, 29 August), where the band stitched older anchors such as M.E.M.P.H.I.S., Crickets, Little Lai and Chemical Warfare Brigade to Revolution in Motion material like Freeze, Photograph and Twisted in the Road. The mechanics remain classic Biscuits: long, dance‑centred improvisations, “sandwiches” (a song split by a jam and reprised) and “inversions” (reversing the order of a song’s sections).

The visual presentation is central. Since late 2023 the touring light-and‑laser design has been led by Alex “Herm” Schneider, whose work has been singled out by both the band and independent reviewers. At the Webster Hall album show in March 2024 his lasers and Blunt Action’s visuals were part of the staging; at Goose’s SPAC night on 3 July 2026, Schneider collaborated at the console, and fans commented on the lasers’ impact.

Their instrumental alter‑ego Tractorbeam — the Biscuits playing largely without vocals, leaning into four‑on‑the‑floor transitions, samples and medleys — has punctuated the year. The project hit 1015 Folsom in San Francisco on 17 April 2026 and popped up in Portland, Maine, on 9 July; it also turned up at Elements Festival in mid‑August. In several markets the Biscuits have paired a Tractorbeam club set with a standard Biscuits theatre date, underlining the difference in feel that the band themselves have discussed publicly.

Where they stand as of September 2026

As of early September 2026, the Biscuits look settled around a core of Brownstein, Gutwillig and Magner, energised by a tranche of post‑2019 songwriting that culminated on 29 March 2024 with Revolution in Motion, and tightened up on the road with Marlon B. Lewis in the engine room. A summer marked by a one‑night reunion with Sam Altman and a high‑profile SPAC support has led into an autumn that mixes headline theatres with festival bills and Atlantic City rooms, while the Tractorbeam strand gives them a parallel canvas. If the band’s own recent podcast appearances are a guide, this configuration plans to keep working at pace.
