Three years at the Broadway Theatre: how the Gatsby musical outlasted its reviews
Marc Bruni's Jazz Age adaptation of Fitzgerald's novel opened in April 2024 to largely unconvinced critics and has since passed 1,000 performances, a million admissions and $142m at the Broadway Theatre, with tickets now on sale into June 2027.
From Millburn to 53rd Street
The stage musical reached New York by way of New Jersey. Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn began previews on 12 October 2023, opened on 22 October and closed on 12 November, with a book by Kait Kerrigan, music by Jason Howland, lyrics by Nathan Tysen, direction by Marc Bruni and choreography by Dominique Kelley, produced by Chunsoo Shin. Jeremy Jordan played Jay Gatsby and Eva Noblezada played Daisy Buchanan, and both carried their performances into town.
The transfer was quick by the standards of new musicals. Previews started at the Broadway Theatre on 53rd Street on 29 March 2024 and the official opening followed on 25 April. Bruni had come off Beautiful: The Carole King Musical; the design hires proved to be the production's most-discussed element, with set and projection design by Paul Tate dePoo III and costumes by Linda Cho. Noah J. Ricketts took Nick Carraway, Samantha Pauly played Jordan Baker and John Zdrojeski played Tom Buchanan.
The split verdict of April 2024
Opening-night notices were mixed to cool, and they divided along a consistent line: the design impressed, the score did not. Laura Collins-Hughes in the New York Times called the sound anodyne and poppy and pleasant without being memorable, missing a vital urgency. David Cote in the Observer heard funk, a Disney princess ballad and a touch of Britpop, and concluded that none of the songs stick in the ear. Chris Jones in the New York Daily News wrote that the music drew more admiration for Howland's craft than emotion tied to the story. Gloria Oladipo in the Guardian compared the golden-lacquered set pieces to a mega-church.
On the other side of the ledger, Adam Feldman in Time Out New York credited grandly scaled Art Deco sets and projections rather than the minimal scenery that often serves literary adaptations, and Kobi Kassal at Theatrely picked out high-octane choreography alongside the scenic and projection work. Johnny Oleksinski in the New York Post singled out the casting of Ricketts as Nick. The New York Theater review described visuals that bombard, fireworks and moving vintage cars included, with the quieter vista across Long Island Sound as the counterweight, and found the one musical exception in Meyer Wolfsheim's jazzy bootlegger number.
The awards season bore that reading out. The production took a single Tony Award in June 2024, Best Costume Design of a Musical for Cho. At the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards it won Outstanding Scenic Design for dePoo and Outstanding Costume Design for Cho.
The record, and the ledger
A cast album arrived digitally on 28 June 2024 and on CD on 2 August, released by Masterworks Broadway. The score's load-bearing numbers are Daisy's "Beautiful Little Fool", a solo about what is expected of women, her duet-driven "For Better or Worse", and Nick's "Roaring On".
The box office tells a different story from the reviews. From the first performance week of 31 March 2024 through the week ending 4 October 2026 the Broadway run had grossed $142,648,952 across 132 weeks, with 1,372,570 admissions. Its strongest week was $2,618,359, taken over the holiday week ending 29 December 2024. The production has twice broken the Broadway Theatre's own weekly sales record, in 2024 and 2025. Recent trading is steady rather than spectacular: $1,015,121 in the week ending 20 September 2026 and $884,544 in the week ending 4 October.
London, Seoul, Baltimore, Warsaw
The commercial machine around the title moved faster than the New York run. A West End staging played the London Coliseum from previews on 11 April 2025 and an opening on 24 April, closing on 7 September, with Jamie Muscato as Gatsby, Frances Mayli McCann as Daisy, Corbin Bleu as Nick, Rachel Tucker as Myrtle, Amber Davies as Jordan Baker and Jon Robyns as Tom. Davies won Best Supporting Performer in a Musical at the 2026 WhatsOnStage Awards for it.
A Seoul production ran at the GS Arts Center in Gangnam from 1 August to 9 November 2025, with Matt Doyle as Gatsby. The North American tour opened at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre on 31 January 2026, is booked across more than 50 cities and is currently scheduled to close on 22 August 2027; Jake David Smith opened as Gatsby opposite Senzel Ahmady as Daisy and Bleu again as Nick, with Austin Colby stepping in for Smith during October 2026. In July 2026 the Roma Musical Theatre in Warsaw announced a 2027 staging, the first in a language other than English, with Bruni and Kelley supervising.
A revolving door of leads
Since early 2025 the New York company has turned over its leads roughly every few months, and the casting announcements have become the show's main source of news. Ryan McCartan took over as Gatsby in January 2025 and Sarah Hyland played Daisy from February 2025. Aisha Jackson's last performance as Daisy was 1 February 2026; Noblezada returned to the role on 5 February. Jordan, back in the title role, took his final bow on 7 March 2026, with McCartan covering as a guest from 8 to 29 March.
Reeve Carney began as Gatsby on 30 March 2026 opposite Noblezada, their first time on a Broadway stage together since Hadestown and their first as a married couple. Both played their last performance on 26 July 2026. Ahmady crossed from the tour to make her Broadway debut as Daisy for the week of 27 July to 2 August, while McCartan rejoined on 27 July for his fourth stint as Gatsby. China Anne McClain, previously known from television, made her Broadway and musical stage debut as Daisy on 8 August 2026.
The churn continued through the autumn. John Behlmann finished as Tom Buchanan in mid-October 2026 and Max Monnig made his Broadway debut in the part on 14 October. Chilina Kennedy returned as Myrtle Wilson the same night, holding the role until Linedy Genao comes back to it on 16 November 2026. Bleu plays Nick, Naturi Naughton-Lewis plays Jordan Baker and Charlie Pollock plays George Wilson.
Where it stands in October 2026
The production reached its 1,000th Broadway performance on 18 September 2026, in its third year at the house. The company toasted more than a million tickets sold to audiences from all 50 states and over 100 countries, cut a cake made by the Angelina Bakery next door, handed out collector's edition playbills and ran one-night stage-door photo calls and a limited merchandise drop.
On 5 October 2026 the producers extended the on-sale period through 6 June 2027, with prices starting at $71 and no closing date announced. The F. Scott Fitzgerald Estate, which has backed the adaptation publicly, describes it as a big, bold, Broadway version of the book.
McClain, speaking at the end of September 2026 about two months in the job, said she never wants to leave the stage now, having grown up with stage fright, and that audience members cry at the show. She also admitted to singing "Beautiful Little Fool" differently every night and to driving the directors to distraction by changing her blocking.
The show, now
The Broadway Theatre performance runs about two and a half hours including the interval, and the staging does the heavy lifting: Paul Tate dePoo III's Art Deco sets work with projections that swap locations in seconds, move vintage cars across the stage and throw fireworks over the party sequences, dressed by Linda Cho's Tony-winning flapper costumes. There are no support acts; the evening is built around a handful of big solo numbers for the leads, among them Daisy's "Beautiful Little Fool" and "For Better or Worse" and Nick's "Roaring On", with Meyer Wolfsheim's jazz-inflected bootlegger number and Dominique Kelley's period ensemble dances breaking up the ballads. Critics at the April 2024 opening praised the design and found the score unmemorable; the audience response has run warmer, and China Anne McClain has drawn ovations on her solos since her debut on 8 August 2026, and a standing ovation at her curtain call alongside Ryan McCartan. Casts change every few months, so the leads on any given night are worth checking against the current company.
