The Sports Museum

A non-profit that grew up alongside the teams

The Sports Museum dates its founding to 1977, and it describes itself, in its own institutional material, as a non-profit educational institution that has served Boston and New England for the past 45 years. It is not a hall of fame run by a league or a club. It is an independent charity that has ended up living inside the city's main arena, on Levels 5 and 6 of TD Garden at 100 Legends Way, with what it calls a half-mile of exhibits celebrating the history and character of Boston sports.

That location tells you a lot about how the museum operates. Its presenting sponsor is New Balance Athletics, and its supporting partner is Delaware North Companies, which owns both TD Garden and the Boston Bruins. The result is a museum whose opening hours, tour times and even sightlines are governed by the building's event calendar. When the arena is being turned around for a concert or a game, parts of the tour route close, and the museum says plainly that on some days tours may not run at all.

The educational side is the part visitors rarely see. According to the museum, more than 35,000 upper elementary and middle school pupils each year go through one of its character-building programmes. The best known is Boston vs. Bullies, which the museum describes as award-winning, alongside a companion initiative called Stand Strong. The exhibits fund and frame that work; the tours are the public face of it.

What is actually in the cases

The museum's promise is breadth rather than a single marquee object. The guided route covers the Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots, and the museum's visitor page lists the fixed points along the way: sculptures of Larry Bird, Ted Williams, Bobby Orr, Carl Yastrzemski and Harry Agganis, a championship ring display it bills as exclusive and which is sponsored by Jostens, the ring manufacturer, and a stop in the Rafters seating section of the arena itself.

That last stop is the one people talk about. From the top of the bowl the tour looks down on the floor and across to the Bruins and Celtics championship banners, which is as close as a day visitor gets to the building's working life. The museum is careful to note that the view is subject to restrictions based on venue activity, so a tour booked on the afternoon of an event may see the arena mid-changeover or not at all.

Because the museum sits on the premium levels, the tour is also a rare way of walking through the upper floors of TD Garden without a ticket to anything. The Go City listing for the tour summarises it as hundreds of unique artefacts and exhibits detailing the evolution of sports in Boston, spread across the two floors, which is a fair description of the density: the complaint you hear most is that there is more to read than a timed group can absorb.

Heritage Hall and the hockey half of the story

The hockey material now has a second home. Boston Bruins Heritage Hall sits on the Level 2 concourse of TD Garden and is described by the venue as the latest addition to its fan experiences. The museum's own page on the space lists more than 65 Bruins artefacts and pieces of memorabilia, a Puck Wall standing ten feet high, a thirty-foot-wide signature film on the history of the club, transparent interactive OLED screens attached to the display cases, a replica broadcast desk, hockey simulators and an illuminated timeline running through what it calls the Bruins' hundred-year history.

Access works two ways. During the day, from 10:30 to 5:00, Heritage Hall is reached through a Sports Museum tour ticket as a self-guided coda to the visit. On Bruins gamedays it opens separately during the two-hour window before face-off for ticket holders heading into the building. TD Garden's own page adds that TD Bank customers can claim up to six complimentary admissions to the museum tour and Heritage Hall by showing a TD Bank card at the point of purchase.

There has been one significant change this year. The museum's visitor page states that beginning 5 January 2026, tours offered by the Sports Museum will not conclude in Boston Bruins Heritage Hall. The museum has not published a reason, and its Heritage Hall page still describes the space as a self-guided experience concluding tours, so the two pages currently disagree. Visitors booking on the strength of the hockey room should check which arrangement is in force on the day.

The most recent additions, dated

The newest thing on the walls is not a trophy. On 4 February 2026 the Boston Globe published details of Glory Days: The Best in High School Sports, a year-long installation produced with the museum, and a joint press release followed on 10 February 2026. It consists of three rotating selections of nine photographs each, covering the autumn, winter and spring seasons, all shot by Globe photographers at Massachusetts school fixtures; the first set draws on images from August, October and November 2025.

Rusty Sullivan, the museum's executive director, said in the release that no one covers high school sports like the Boston Globe, and that the images in the exhibit capture the essence of sports. Katie McInerney, the Globe's senior assistant sports editor, said the paper's team had witnessed the determination, talent and joy that make school athletics special as it crisscrossed the state. It is a modest installation by scale, but it is the museum's most visible piece of programming this year and the first to rotate on a schedule.

The institution's ceremonial calendar continues in parallel. The 24th annual Tradition, the museum's honours evening, was held on the TD Garden arena floor on Tuesday 18 November 2025; the museum's list of 2025 honourees includes Fred Lynn and Isaiah Thomas. For 2026 the museum has published a fundraising slate: a team in the 130th Bank of America Boston Marathon on 20 April, a Rodman Ride for Kids team on 16 May, the 40th annual Celebrity Golf Classic at Renaissance Golf Club on 15 June, and a place in the TCS New York City Marathon charity programme on 1 November.

Standing, and the honest caveats

The museum's position is unusual. It is nearly fifty years old, it holds the only public route through TD Garden's upper floors, and it has the sponsorship of the arena's owner. Yet it lives on sufferance of that arena's diary, and the Heritage Hall change in January 2026 shows how the building's priorities can reshape the visitor product without much notice.

On the review platforms that could be checked, the tour scores solidly rather than spectacularly. Go City lists it at 4.2 out of 5 from nine reviews, at a full price of up to thirty dollars. The museum's own literature pre-empts the two recurring gripes: it warns that some days tours may not be running because of venue activity, and that views into the arena depend on what is happening on the floor. Anyone judging the museum by a visit on an event afternoon is judging a shortened version of it.
