Vanila Swing: fifteen years in Athens, and the record that turned an American covers band into a Greek-language one
Formed in Athens in mid-2011 as a rockabilly revival band with a swing name, Vanila Swing spent a decade on covers and scattered singles before handing an entire album to an outside songwriter. In 2026 they have settled into a recurring billing at one Athens jazz room, with a single date currently on sale.
A swing name on a rock 'n' roll band
Vanila Swing came together in Athens in the middle of 2011, and the name has been a slight misdirection ever since. The band's own account of its sound puts 1950s rockabilly ahead of 1940s swing, with a rock 'n' roll charge over both. In an early interview with the Greek site Rockandroll.gr the group was blunter: the swing influence was audible on some tracks, they said, but they thought of themselves as a rock 'n' roll band, and rock 'n' roll mattered more to them than swing. The reference points they named in that conversation — the Stray Cats, Brian Setzer, Imelda May, the White Stripes, Elvis Presley, and the guitarists Chet Atkins and Charlie Christian — describe a rockabilly revival lineage rather than a big-band one.
That early line-up bears almost no relation to the present one. Only the singer Lida Angelaki carries over: the interview lists Panagiotis Papaporfyriou on guitar, Karolos Mavrogenis on piano, Giannis Anninos on bass, Claude Azizah on drums and Alkistis Lampropoulou on backing vocals. The band was working two weekly residencies at the time, Fridays at Six Pistols in Kolonaki and Saturdays at Tilemachos BBQ in Kifisia, and said it had no album in the diary — only original material being written for the stage. It took three years from forming before anything was released.
Singles first, albums later
The recorded catalogue, as listed on Apple Music, starts with the single "Take One Step Ahead" in 2014. The debut album, The Rose, followed in 2016 under an English title, and remains the only full-length on the band's Bandcamp page alongside a handful of loose tracks.
What came next was irregular rather than campaigned. "Agonia", credited as a feature with the actor and director Renos Haralambidis, appeared in 2017; "Sto Hioni" in 2019; then "Xypna Agapi Mou" and "On My Own" in 2022. Two of those titles are in Greek, one in English, and that split is the clearest signal of where the band was heading. A group whose stage repertoire was built almost entirely on American records of the 1930s to the 1950s was gradually putting out its own material in its own language — and doing it a single at a time, with gaps of two and three years, in the manner of a working live band rather than a label project.
The band's own summary of its influences stretches wider than the Rockandroll.gr interview suggested, reaching from Elvis Presley and Wanda Jackson to the Beatles, Ray Charles, the White Stripes and the Greek singer Tzeni Vanou.
Frabalas, and handing the songwriting over
The second album, Frabalas, arrived in 2024 and represents the most decisive thing the band has done. Every song on it — words and music — is credited to Giorgos Markopoulos, with production by Thodoris Kontakos, who works as Kyrios K. The track titles are Greek throughout: Sto Stathmo, To Therio Ki O Giannis, Vouliazo, Frabalas, Mi Mou Les, Spathi Jedi and De Thimame. Yannis Kyriazopoulos, Yannis Kassetas and Konstantinos Angelopoulos are credited among the album's contributors. The band described the material as swing, rock 'n' roll, blues and rockabilly built on vintage aesthetics and arranged afresh.
The campaign ran across the second half of 2024. "To Party" came out as the first single on 21 June 2024, with a release show at Afrikana in Kerameikos on 5 July. A second single, "Tha Erthi Kalokeri", followed the same year. The album itself was then presented at a live party at Tiki Bar, 15 Falirou Street in Makrygianni, on Wednesday 27 November 2024 at 21:30, tickets at seven euros, with guest performers joining the band.
A video for the album track "Mi Mou Les", again credited to Markopoulos for both music and lyrics, appeared in 2025. It is the most recent release of any kind traceable to the band; nothing new has surfaced in 2026.
Where they stand in late 2026
Fifteen years after forming, Vanila Swing function as a working Athens band rather than a touring one. Through 2026 their public dates have all been at the same address — Theatre of the No, Konstantinou Palaiologou 3, a room Greek listings describe as a jazz venue that programmes international acts — and all under the same show title, From Swing to Rock 'n' Roll. The pattern is a recurring billing rather than a run: Friday 15 May 2026, Saturday 3 October 2026, and Friday 13 November 2026, each at 21:30, each at twelve euros.
The November date is the one currently on sale, with pre-sale through Ticketmaster's Greek site; it was announced in the Greek press on 26 October 2026. The October show had been written up on 22 September. Coverage of all three has come from the listings and culture desks — Protothema, CultureNow, Athinorama, Stage News, CityPortal — and reads closely enough across outlets to suggest a common press release behind it.
Outside Athens and outside that venue, the most recent verifiable engagement is the main stage of the 53rd Athens Book Festival on 7 September 2025 at 20:30, a concert hosted by the Greek Publishers Association. That billing leaned on the covers side of the band's work rather than on Frabalas.
What a performance consists of
From Swing to Rock 'n' Roll is framed by the band as a chronological run rather than a set of their own songs. The stated arc moves from the juke joints of rural America and the ballrooms of the 1930s and 1940s into the clubs of the 1950s and on towards the concert stages of the 1970s, which in practice means a repertoire organised around named artists. The ones the band lists are Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington on the swing side, then Ruth Brown, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Wanda Jackson and Jerry Lee Lewis as the music turns. Their own phrase for the join is the elegance of the big orchestras set against the raw energy of the street. Groove, a vintage look and a lot of dancing are what the listings promise.
The touring party is six on stage plus two more voices. Angelaki sings; Andreas Kampylis plays guitar, Stavros Raptis double bass, Konstantinos Zotos piano and Dimitris Grigoriadis drums, with Nikolaia Triantafyllou and Konstantina Giannopoulou on backing vocals — the two backing singers being the visible addition to the line-up that made Frabalas.
One honest limit is worth stating: no published review of any of the 2026 performances could be found, and no running time or support act has been advertised for the November date. The Greek coverage is announcement writing, not criticism, and the band's standing rests on a decade and a half of steady Athens work rather than on press verdicts.
The show, now
The current show is billed as From Swing to Rock 'n' Roll and runs at Theatre of the No, Konstantinou Palaiologou 3 in Athens, at 21:30 with tickets at twelve euros; the next one is Friday 13 November 2026, pre-sale through Ticketmaster's Greek site, following the same billing on 15 May and 3 October 2026. It is structured as a chronological set rather than an album show: swing-era material associated with Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, then the turn into rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll through Ruth Brown, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Wanda Jackson and Jerry Lee Lewis, with the band describing the evening in terms of groove, a vintage stage look and dancing. Eight performers are listed — Lida Angelaki singing, Andreas Kampylis on guitar, Stavros Raptis on double bass, Konstantinos Zotos on piano and Dimitris Grigoriadis on drums, with Nikolaia Triantafyllou and Konstantina Giannopoulou on backing vocals. No support act and no running time have been advertised for the November date, and no published review of the May or October performances could be found; the venue is described in Greek listings as a jazz room that hosts international acts, which sets the scale at club rather than hall.
