A SoundCloud alias, then a platinum single

John Ryan Kaiser was born in 1998 and grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he picked up a guitar at eight. From 2014 he uploaded music to SoundCloud under the name Amateur Observer. The Yot Club name arrived in 2019, along with the EPs aquarium and Bipolar and a song called "YKWIM?" that would quietly rearrange the whole project.

The single did not break immediately. It circulated on TikTok over the following years, and the Recording Industry Association of America certified it platinum in November 2022 — three years after it was posted. The British Phonographic Industry followed with a silver certification in 2023. By then Kaiser had moved to Nashville, in May 2021, and had signed to the Swedish distributor Amuse, which has released his records since.

The early method was strict rather than casual: distorted vocals, lo-fi drum programming, guitars soaked in chorus pedal, analogue synth lines and light pads, much of it captured through a single microphone in whatever room was available, occasionally a car. The self-imposed limits gave the catalogue its texture — indie pop that keeps slipping toward surf rock, post-punk and synth pop without settling anywhere for long.

Two albums spent widening the frame

The first full-length, off the grid, came in 2022, with the Santolina EP the same year. In 2023 he reclaimed his old SoundCloud alias as a title for the amateur observer EP. The second album, Rufus, followed in 2024, and the Rule of Thirds EP in 2025, alongside singles including "Pixel", "Nostalgia" and "No way" in 2024 and "Falling off / Circles in my brain" in 2025.

That stretch also built out a network of collaborators — work with vundabar, Field Medic, CASTLEBEAT and Harrison Lipton. The vundabar connection matters more than a credit line usually does: the two acts ran a 22-show co-headline in 2025, and they are sharing a bill again across Europe this month.

What the run did not produce, by Kaiser's own account, was a record with a spine. He has described his older writing bluntly — a first verse about one thing, a second verse about something else entirely — and called the results song compilations rather than albums.

Two years in a closet in Philadelphia

Simpleton was announced on 30 January 2026 and released on 17 April via Amuse: thirteen tracks, roughly 47 minutes, self-produced. It took two years from 2024, made after Kaiser relocated to Philadelphia and settled into something close to a hermit's routine, recording in his apartment closet and working shifts at the Rival Bros coffee shop nearby. He has called it the first album where he stayed on task and held to a consistent theme.

The theme is the American suburb, and the album is unsentimental about it. Gated neighbourhoods, curated feeds and dependable routines are treated as a mechanism for erasing empathy and responsibility — a walled-off world where the hard questions are easy not to ask. The sleeve, painted by Jake Longstreth, is a nondescript fast-food unit: the flattest possible image of the thing under examination.

Kaiser's own framing is less bleak than the subject matter suggests. He has said the record is about attempting optimism in a world that makes optimism difficult, and that people still carve out meaningful lives inside it. On the writing itself he is plain: the lyrics have to cut through now, because otherwise there is no point. Weezer and Brian Wilson are the acknowledged reference points, and both are audible.

The lead single, "Projecting", arrived with the announcement, its video directed by Nathan Castiel with appearances from Jordana, Faerybabyy, Blaketheman1000 and Anton Hochheim of Beach Fossils.

What the record actually argues

FLOOD Magazine's Kevin Crandall read Simpleton as a set of indie-surf songs grappling with suburban numbness, each track probing a different nerve and asking how a life engineered for comfort becomes so emotionally airless. He singled out "Bones", a downcast reckoning with career choices built around a wailing chorus and harmonised electric guitars, and "Romanticization", which goes after the family portrait and the false impression of happiness it sells.

"Honor Roll" takes on schooling as a conditioning system that pays out for obedience. The closer, "Uphill Road", gathers the argument and hands the resolution to the instruments — extended indie-surf rock passages doing the work the lyrics refuse to tidy up. The lo-fi innocence of the guitar tone survives from the bedroom years, now cut with a 1990s alternative-rock heft the earlier records did not have.

Where 2026 has taken the band

The Simpleton Tour was announced with the album: 25 North American dates from 15 May 2026 in Philadelphia to 17 June at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, taking in Washington, Atlanta, Houston, Austin, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, Denver, Chicago's Thalia Hall on 10 June, Toronto and Boston. Renny Conti opened the Minneapolis date on 9 June.

The European leg started on 9 September at the Metronome in Nottingham, then Glasgow's Classic Grand on the 10th, Manchester Academy on the 11th, the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on the 13th with local support from Clive, Thekla in Bristol on the 15th and Village Underground in London on the 16th. Brighton's Chalk falls on 17 September. From there the run crosses to Le Trabendo in Paris on the 19th, Le Botanique in Brussels on the 20th, Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam on the 22nd, Club Volta in Cologne on the 23rd, Bahnhof Pauli in Hamburg on the 24th, Ampere in Munich on the 26th, Rock Café in Prague on the 27th and the Frannz Club in Berlin on the 30th.

This leg is billed as vundabar with Yot Club, which changes the shape of the night: smaller rooms than the North American headline dates, and a shorter slot than the full Simpleton set. Setlist.fm has logged 18 Yot Club setlists so far in 2026, against 40 in 2025 and 41 in 2024 — a band that has been on the road more or less continuously for three years.

The set, as it stands

The headline version of the show ran long. At White Oak Music Hall Upstairs in Houston on 21 May, the set opened with "no way!", "down bad" and "The Bay" before dropping the new single "projecting" fourth, then "Bones", "Make It Easy", "Pixel", "Saturday", "Fly Out West", "Human Nature", "Nostalgia", "Romanticization", "Changes", "Okay", "Here and Now", "Other World" and "Comfort Zone". "YKWIM?" arrived eighteenth, followed by "cant celebrate" and "japan", with a cover of Weezer's "El Scorcho" as the encore — twenty songs and an encore in all.

The pattern holds across the touring history. "japan", "YKWIM?", "down bad", "Fly Out West" and "The Bay" are the five most-played songs in the live catalogue, and covers turn up often enough to be a habit rather than a novelty: Weezer, the Mountain Goats and the Apples in Stereo have all been played. Simpleton material is worked into the body of the set rather than stacked at the front.

There is little in the way of production. The reports that exist are about the playing — one attendee at a 2026 show noted the guitarist and drummer tearing it up and the band talking to people in the crowd afterwards, which is roughly the scale the current European rooms are built for.
