Athens at Christmas and NYE 2026: Markets, Closures and Acropolis Fireworks

Dates for the festive parks, the free SNFCC programme on 31 December, the rooftops facing the Parthenon at midnight, and what you need to book weeks ahead.

By Alexander Reid7 min read

The DEI Christmas Factory opens inside the old Gazi gasworks on 21 November 2026 and runs to 6 January 2027, with an outdoor ice rink under two floodlit gasholders. Entry starts at €5 and the workshops are included. At the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the light trail and the midnight fireworks on 31 December are free.

Technopolis and Kotzia Square

DEI Christmas Factory (Technopolis, Gazi) is the city's biggest festive site, and it is built for crowds. Wooden market huts, fairground rides and the ice rink fill a red-brick Victorian gasworks, with the two rusted gasholders lit above them after dark. Free workshops are part of the entry price.

From 23 December the park opens at 10:00, and that is its busiest stretch. Take the first hour of the day if you want the rink without a queue behind you. Earlier in December the same park costs the same and holds fewer people.

Families and office groups are the core trade here, and the packages are priced for them: two adults and two children come to €36. Nobody at the door caps the size of the group you walk in with.

Christmas Market at Kotzia Square (in front of Athens City Hall) is free and has no door policy. Decorated wooden huts and a carousel ring a marble square, with the sunken ancient road excavation fenced off in the middle and the neoclassical city hall behind. It opens daily from 12:00 to 21:00, from 19 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, and it trades on Christmas Day. The square sits between Monastiraki and Omonia.

Christmas World at the SNFCC

Christmas World (Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center) opens on 29 November 2026 and runs to early January. Admission is free, and the only ticketed part of the site is the outdoor ice rink, where sessions are capacity-limited.

The light trail runs down a long straight canal under 82 plane trees strung with lights, with Renzo Piano's sloping green roof and the glass canal-side hall above it. Three tall trees stand in the Agora, and the rink is on the canal's north bank. Concerts are part of the free programme.

New Year's Eve begins at 22:30 and is also free: excerpts performed by the Greek National Opera, carols, then fireworks at midnight. If you want a seat somewhere warm first, the opera's own holiday programme is in the same complex.

The holiday run at the Greek National Opera

Greek National Opera (Stavros Niarchos Hall, SNFCC) has three things on across December 2026 and January 2027: the ballet Giselle, The Queen of Spades, and The Emperor's Nightingale for children. Christmas week books out first, as it does every year.

Greek National Opera — Stavros Niarchos Hall, Athens

The auditorium is a deep red horseshoe with stacked balconies, set inside the glass-walled block at the cultural centre, and the foyer glass holds the lit canal. Seating is ticketed at €€. Book early for the holiday run.

Group bookings go through the box office rather than the website, on +30 213 0885700, open daily from 09:00 to 21:00. Call in the morning if you are placing several seats together.

New Year's Eve on the rooftops

360 Cocktail Bar (Monastiraki Square) puts the floodlit Parthenon dead ahead across a three-level terrace, with greenery-walled seating, a glass balustrade and the square's crowds directly below. On 31 December it is one of the best-placed rooms in the city for the fireworks over the Acropolis. Reserve if you want a prime terrace table, and ask for the upper deck if there are a lot of you.

360 Cocktail Bar, Athens

It opens daily at 10:00 and closes at 01:30, or 02:30 on Friday and Saturday. In daylight the same view costs you the price of a coffee. Evening prices are €€€.

A for Athens (Miaouli 2-4) reopened after a 2026 refurbishment, pale and minimal in its furniture, with the Acropolis framed face-on over the tiled roofs of Plaka and Monastiraki. Cocktails run €13 to €16 and the bar closes at 02:00.

A for Athens, Athens

Seats at the bar are first-come and nobody holds them, and the terrace is small. A group of more than six should book a table rather than turn up and hope.

Cake in Psyrri and liqueur in Plaka

Little Kook (Psyrri) redecorates from scratch for Christmas every year, and the set swallows a whole pedestrian lane: giant hanging baubles, sleighs and nutcrackers overhead, towering layer cakes on the tables under strung lights. It is the most photographed festive address in the city, which also makes it the longest queue.

Little Kook, Athens

The menu is cake and hot chocolate rather than dinner, and nobody takes a reservation, so arrive at the 09:00 opening. Prices are €€.

Brettos (Kydathineon 41, Plaka) has been distilling since 1909 and opens daily from 10:00 to 03:00. The back wall is hundreds of backlit multicoloured liqueur bottles floor to ceiling, with huge wooden barrels ranged above the bar.

Brettos, Athens

The room holds 15 bar stools, and past those you stand, which suits a group tasting rather than sitting a party down for the evening. Bottles are sold to take home, and prices are €.

Cocktail rooms to book ahead

Noel (Kolokotroni 59B) is Christmas-themed year round, which in December leaves it nothing extra to do. Clusters of red baubles and vintage ornaments hang dense from the ceiling of a low-lit arcade bar, above brass fittings and velvet seating. Cocktails are €10 to €14.

Noel, Athens

It serves all day as a bar and a restaurant, with tables that take groups, and it runs to 03:00 on Friday and Saturday. Call ahead through the festive weeks.

Line (Agathodemonos 37, Kato Petralona) took No. 1 in the inaugural Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026. It also sits at No. 5 in the World's 50 Best Bars. The corner room is pale concrete and timber on a residential backstreet, with an open pass where bread and beer come out alongside the cocktails.

Line, Athens

The format is a tasting dinner and the room is small, which suits two to four people. Reservations through the site are essential, and for the holiday period you need to book weeks ahead.

The Clumsies (Praxitelous 30) occupies a three-storey neoclassical townhouse: a marble-top bar and a pool table on the ground floor, and a hidden upstairs Room with bookshelves and panelling that a booked group can take over. It has held a place on every World's 50 Best Bars list since 2015, and ranks No. 30 on both the World's and Europe's lists for 2026.

The Clumsies, Athens

It is an all-day bar, so an early group walks straight in. Evenings fill fast, so reserve.

Live music and a Greek night out

Klakaz (Avramiotou 6-8) is the garden that used to be six d.o.g.s. That venue closed in December 2024 and the same hidden courtyard reopened under the new name in April 2026, mature trees and mismatched retro furniture under string lights, with a dark basement club room off the yard.

Klakaz, Athens

Live gigs, drag shows and stand-up all run here, and club nights are ticketed per event. The courtyard takes groups without fuss. Book under Klakaz, because the old name will not find it.

Gazarte (Voutadon 34, Gazi) keeps several stages running through the winter, across rock, jazz, electronic and hip-hop, so something is usually on when the city centre goes quiet. The upper-floor roof terrace looks across low rooftops to the lit Acropolis, and the black-box ground stage sits below with the gasworks chimneys behind it.

Gazarte, Athens

Concerts are ticketed by event. The rooftop restaurant-bar takes group reservations, and it is a short walk from the Christmas Factory in the same district.

Posidonio Music Hall (Poseidonos 18, Elliniko) is the Greek night out proper: a coastal pista with tiered tables around a long low stage, lasers and carnation petals in the air, and a dressed-up crowd standing on chairs once the night turns. The 2026 to 2027 winter season has Thodoris Ferris with Stella Kalli, from September 2026.

Posidonio Music Hall, Athens

Headliners come on after midnight, on Friday and Saturday. The whole room is built around table bookings for groups. Reserve on 213 048 7021 or through U-Pass, and do it early, because holiday-week tables go first. Prices are €€€.

Warm water when the weather turns

Al Hammam Traditional Baths (Tripodon 16) is a domed marble steam chamber lit by small star-shaped skylights, with a roof terrace above it serving tea in view of the Acropolis. Treatments are an Ottoman black-soap scrub and a bubble massage.

Al Hammam Traditional Baths, Athens

Doors open at 13:00 most days and at 11:00 on Saturdays, which makes it an afternoon booking on a cold damp day. The venue is small, so book online in advance. Private sessions take couples and small groups, but not large parties.

Lake Vouliagmeni (Athens Riviera) holds its water at a steady 22°C through the winter, an emerald brackish lake pressed against a sheer grey limestone cliff, with timber decks and loungers at the edge and steam coming off the surface on a cold morning.

Lake Vouliagmeni, Athens

It opens 08:30 to 16:30 from 10 November to 1 March. Entry is €17 on weekdays and €19 at weekends and on holidays, paid at the gate. The last ticket is sold 90 minutes before closing. Go in the morning.

Dates, bookings and closures

Kotzia Square trades on Christmas Day, and Christmas World asks for no ticket at all. The opera box office, Line, Al Hammam and a table at Posidonio all want booking weeks before the holiday run, and Little Kook takes no reservations in any week.
